San Franciscos newest maritime structure shows how the citys relationship to the working waterfront has changed and what the concept of our working waterfront has come to mean.
Its the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27, a crisply detailed shed of corrugated aluminum thats 40 feet tall and 504 feet long. The specifications are tailored to the needs of a leisure industry whose ships are exponentially larger than the new structure, with an interior that can moonlight as a flexible venue for private events.
The glassy wall doesnt line up with the Embarcadero, as is the case with the historic pier structures to the north and south. Instead, it sits behind a 2.3-acre raised plaza with grass and benches intended as a respite for passersby who know the northeast waterfront not as a clamorous industrial zone, but as a viewsome promenade.
But if the $100 million structure that officially opened Thursday will be a monochromatic backdrop more than a destination, its also a stylish if austere work of functional architecture.
No obvious flourish
The design is by KMD Architects and Pfau Long Architecture, two local firms that arent prone to flamboyance, especially with a budget nowhere near as lavish as it sounds. Except for the gently angled canopy that faces into the triangular pier protection from the elements and a visual transition from closed structure to open space theres no obvious flourish at all.
Ive already heard from readers put off by the restraint who would prefer something supposedly iconic. In fact, this is a service building for the real icons, cruise liners such as the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess that docked Monday a balconied white tub with the nose of a dolphin and the dimensions of a container ship, 952 feet long and 195 feet high.
At its most basic level, this terminal serves to funnel passengers on and off ship with a minimum of fuss, under security procedures just a notch below the ones in airports.
Travelers enter a tall, airy foyer in the northwest corner of the structure where the lone decorative feature is an art installation that honors the buildings namesake, a former president of the International Longshoremens and Warehousemens Union and a longtime member of the San Francisco Port Commission before his death in 1998. Up a set of escalators awaits the line of metal detectors. Beyond that is a spacious waiting room with a close-up view of the floating village entered on a second-level gangway that can rise or fall 10 feet to respond to tides and remain fully accessible to people with walkers or in wheelchairs.
The eastern half of the second floor is walled off from the waiting area thats where passengers go from the ship through customs, then descend to pick up their luggage and pass through another security checkpoint before exploring San Francisco. Both the waiting and customs areas have no fixed seating or counters, so that the spaces can be used for private events such as dinners and small conferences when cruise ships are absent.

Salt Lake City fire damages two sheds, kills pet iguana

A fire that began Friday in a detached shed/garage in Salt Lake City caused $25,000 and caused the death of a pet iguana, officials said.
The cause of the blaze, near 500 East on Downington Avenue (1820 South), was most likely electrical and began in an overhead light in the shed, the Salt Lake City Fire Department said.
The fire was reported Friday morning and produced smoke that could be seen in downtown Salt Lake City at about 11:20 a.m.
The wind caused the fire to spread to a neighboring property and damage a detached shed there, as well as the outside of that home, fire department spokesman Jasen Asay said.
The iguana was inside a cage in one of the sheds.

The new additions means that 25 per cent of the board of directors are women, a first for the body.

Each year competition for places increases and our democratic process has seen more people putting themselves forward for election and more members voting this year than ever before.
This proves that Ukie represents all game makers and publishers across all formats and platforms and means we can speak with one voice representing the games industry to government, media, policy makers and the public in the UK.
Ukie also announced two major new projects: the Digital Schoolhouse programme and the Nesta Games Cluster Map.
The programme, funded by the Mayor of Londons Schools Excellence Fund (LSEF), will aim to establish the new computing curriculum in schools and develop teaching of the subject across London.
Digital Schoolhouse, in collaboration with education association Computing at School, has recruited 10 London secondary schools to grow local networks of primary teachers in order to teach computing creatively.
By 2015 the project aims to have worked with at least 100 primary schools and reached thousands of children. Ukie has expressed its hope to expand the project nationwide over the next few years.

A movement has materialized to thwart the potential move of the Bay 101 Casino from San Jose to Milpitas. The all-volunteer group of Milpitas citizens last week announced the launch of Milpitas Voters Against Measure E (Voters Against E).
Unlike supporters who say passage of Measure E on Nov. 4 will allow a card room to operate within city limits and adopt a 10.5-percent card room tax that will result in approximately $8.4 million in annual general fund revenue, the Voters Against E believe the action will degrade the city's quality of life.
"Milpitas has a well-earned reputation as a family-friendly town. In 1954, Milpitas won a major battle for independent status over the City of San Jose, celebrated by the 'Minute Man' statue in front of city hall today," Mike McInerney, a Voters Against E spokesman, wrote in a Sept. 18 statement. "Welcoming a card room to Milpitas, even if it locates on a corner of Milpitas next to the landfill, does not fit the character of the Milpitas where we want to raise our families."
McInerney added a card room will tarnish Milpitas' reputation as a family-friendly town.
In addition, opponents say Bay 101 -- in its quest to relocate from San Jose to Milpitas -- gained a "sweetheart deal" toward the relocation.
"The Bumb family, owners of the Bay 101 card room, want to relocate it to Milpitas," he wrote, noting Ed McGovern, the Bumb family's spokesperson, told this newspaper the family was tired of their treatment by the City of San Jose. "Measure E gives the Bumbs a sweetheart deal -- a substantial financial gain over their present arrangement with San Jose and a gambling-friendly environment where local control is severely handcuffed.
"In San Jose, only voters can decide whether to increase the number of tables per card room or allow new Vegas-style slot machines. Under Measure E, the city council may increase the number of tables and the state decides what games are allowed unless the voters pass a ballot measure to prohibit."
The group claims:
Milpitas City Manager Tom Williams countered that by saying the card room would be subject to annual reviews, and that employees would have to be re-licensed with a type of work permit every three years.
