The city of Chicago's Department of Buildings issued a demolition permit Friday for the removal of outfield bleacher sections at Wrigley Field, a city spokesman said.
Cubs spokesman Julian Green said Friday that bleacher renovations will start Monday. The left-field and right-field bleachers will be demolished and rebuilt as part of a $375 million stadium renovation plan. An additional $200 million in upgrades are planned for the surrounding area.
Parts of Waveland and Sheffield avenues are closed for the renovations and won't reopen until the spring. Utility work around the stadium has already begun.
The team plans to renovate the bleacher section. The overall project includes five outfield signs and two video boards by Opening Day next year.
With a permit issued, the Cubs could be hit with a lawsuit from the owners of nearby rooftop clubs who have said that outfield advertising signs would block their views and violate a revenue-sharing agreement they have with the Cubs. A spokesman for the Wrigleyville Rooftop Association declined to comment Friday.
Some rooftop owners last month sued the city and its Landmarks Commission, asking a judge to throw out the panel's unanimous decision that allowed the Cubs to erect seven outfield signs that the businesses say will block their views. The suit was recently transferred to federal court.

DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) The sudden demolition of century-old buildings in Dallas is prompting city leaders to take action. While a number of historic properties have recently fell victim to the wrecking ball, some residents have set out to protect other properties from the same fate.
Theres plenty of shiny and new in the city, but in the downtown Dallas core theres more history than you might imagine. But as it stands, theres very little protection in place to keep buildings from being reduced to rubble again.
The teardown of 1611 Main Street and two connecting buildings caught many people in the neighborhood off guard. It really hurts looking and seeing a 129-year-old building disappear, just in a weekend, said Adrian Bustos.
(credit: CBSDFW.COM)
Bustos used to live in the lofts that occupied 1611 Main Street. He now owns the store next door, a pet care business specializing in grooming, natural food and dog walking services. He says redevelopment over the last three years has been good for Downtown Pawz.
Its a better vibe than what it used to be. Its not so dead.
But neither Bustos, preservationists, or some city leaders expected the demolition that happened last weekend. A developer, Headington, had a demolition permit pulled last Friday, and began the work on Sunday. The new 1611 Main will be home to high-end retail.
Like many of the buildings that were constructed during Dallass building boom at the turn of the 20th century, this one was not protected from change.

VALPARAISO | The dome is doomed.
Bids were opened at Friday's board of public works and safety meeting for the demolition of the former Natural Ovens Bakery dome on Mariposa Drive in Eastport Centre Industrial Park. Economic Development Director Patrick Lyp said the goal is to award the contract in two weeks and have the building down and disposed of by the end of the year.
Before that can happen, the city's Redevelopment Commission is going to have to come up with a little extra cash. The commission budgeted $350,000 for the demolition based on preliminary estimates, but the lowest of the three bids from G.E. Marshall just for the demolition of the dome and the concrete sidewalks around it was $631,180.
Consultant John Blosky, of Amereco Inc., said the polyethylene-coated dome is 60 feet high, and its concrete walls range from 18 inches think at the base to eight inches at the top. The concrete foundation is eight feet deep and 12 feet wide and everything is reinforced.
The bids included four separate alternates for additional work: to remove the additional concrete from the parking lot and driveways; to crush all the concrete not part of the dome and haul it to the city-owned Sylvester property next to the Porter County Municipal Airport; to crush the concrete from the parking lot and driveways and haul it to the property, and to remove the polyethylene coat from the dome, crush the concrete and haul it to the property.
Marshall's total for all the alternates was $191,430. Blosky said the crushed concrete could be a valuable and relatively cheap source of stone that could be used as a base for roads on the Sylvester property, which the city is developing in partnership with Chester Inc. as an extension of the industrial park.
After the dome is gone, the city can talk about how to go about redeveloping the site, Lyp said. At this point the city has no one interested in the site, which went through several tax sales without any takers before it was turned over to the city by Porter County.
Lyp said the taxes due on the dome are more than the value of the building. Under the agreement the city has with the county, any money from the sale and/or development of the site will go toward the demolition costs. Anything left over will be split with the city getting 70 percent and the county 30 percent.
