TIME Politics National Security Khorasan: Behind the Mysterious Name of the Newest Terrorist Threat Army Lt. Gen. William Mayville, Jr., Director of Operations J3, speaks about the operations in Syria, Sept. 23, 2014, during a news conference at the Pentagon. Cliff OwenAPe The word sheds important light on the grandiose, even apocalyptic vision that drives many Sunni radicals
It was six days after the Sept. 11 attacks, and with dark smoke still rising from lower Manhattan, Ali Soufan was face-to-face with the most senior al-Qaeda leader in American custody.
Soufan, an FBI counterterrorism agent, was inside a Yemen prison, interrogating a captured al-Qaeda operative named Abu Jandal, a former bodyguard and confidante to Osama bin Laden.
Abu Jandal was far from intimidated by his American interlocutor. To the contrary, he sought to menace him. You cant stop the mujahedin. We will be victorious, he smugly told Soufan. You want to know why?
He continued with a grin: The hadith says If you see the black banners coming from Khurasan, join that army, even if you have to crawl over ice; no power will be able to stop them.
Soufan recognized this Islamic saying immediately, and interrupted Abu Jandal to complete it: And they will finally reach Baitul Maqdis [Jerusalem], where they will erect their flags, he said.
The grin was gone. You know the hadith? Abu Jandal asked with surprise. Do you really work for the FBI?
Abu Jandal had failed to appreciate that knowing the Khorasan hadith was part of the job of an Islamic terrorism expert like Soufan. As the former FBI agent explains in his 2013 book The Black Banners, the hadith of Khorasan sometimes also spelled Khurasan is fundamental to radical Islamist ideology. A prophecy describing a Muslim army from Central Asia storming across the Middle East and into Jerusalem has long inspired violent jihadists.
The hadith of Khorasan is newly relevant thanks to the disclosure by U.S. officials of a terrorist group by that name operating in Syria. The Khorasan Group was a surprise target of American air strikes in Syria on Monday night mostly aimed at the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS).
While America obsessed over ISIS in recent weeks, Khorasan remained unknown to the public until this month. President Obama had never publicly mentioned its name before Tuesday morning. But U.S. officials say they have tracked the group for two years.

TORONTO North American markets fell sharply Thursday in a wide-ranging sell-off amid soft commodity prices and economic data in the United States.
The S&P/TSX composite index lost 224 points to 14,895 points, weighed down by energy, metal and financial stocks. The Canadian dollar faded 0.30 of a cent to 90.14 cents US.
All of a sudden, Canadian stocks are receiving a dose of reality
Brian Belski, chief investment strategist for BMO Capital Markets, said some of the downward pressure could be attributed to profit-taking, but mostly, the market was pulling back from recent highs.
Investors in Canada over the near term have become complacent because the Canadian market has outperformed, he said.
The issue when stocks go up is that youre believing it more, and now all of a sudden, Canadian stocks are receiving a dose of reality.
Lower commodities weighed on stocks and the Canadian dollar. The December gold bullion contract was down $4.40 at US$1,215.10 an ounce, while the December copper contract fell two cents at US$3.04 a pound. The November crude oil contract dipped 43 cents at US$92.37 a barrel.
We really feel that the momentum trade, especially in the energy and materials space has really skewed prices to the upside so far this year, Belski said.
Now the resulting momentum shift is turning the other way.

Amid an ongoing business downturn, mortgage technology company Digital Risk LLC has shed more than 30 additional jobs at its Lake Mary operation, the company told state officials this week.
The Maitland-based company handed out pink slips to 33 workers on Monday with an effective termination date of Nov. 19, according to documents filed with the state.
Its latest action comes nearly six months after Digital Risk laid off about 750 workers statewide more than 500 of them in Maitland and Lake Mary. Eventually, the company brought back more than 500 workers, many on a temporary contract basis as part of a cost-control effort.
Company officials have cited a downturn in its mortgage forensics, fraud detection and risk-analysis business a development that has affected all companies in the industry.
The company has said it is still on track to create all 1,000 full-time jobs it promised statewide as part of a series of job-creation economic incentive agreements. Since 2009, it has been approved to get more than $4 million from the state and Orange, Seminole, Palm Beach and Duval counties. Its peak employment statewide is about 1,600 more than half in Maitland and Lake Mary.

NORTHEAST WISCONSIN(WFRV) - A Manitowoc woman is being investigated after she allegedly assaulted her son ,5, who has Down Syndrome.
Ruthann Grieserreportedly made her son sit in scalding hot water and then took him to the emergency room. She told police she was upset with her son. The boy has been taken to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee where he is recovering from his injuries.
This case brings to light the growing problem of child abuse and neglect in northeast Wisconsin. In Brown County alone, reported cases are at a five-time high. But there are places parents can turn for help.
Jennifer Bastien is a busy mom.
"It's crazy," she exclaimed. "It's absolutely crazy."
She has twin two-month old daughters and a two-year old son with Down Syndrome.
"He surprises us everyday," said Jennifer. "He is stronger than me and my husband combined. He's a strong little boy."
Juggling doctor's appointments, speech and physical therapy classes and play time, Jennifer admits she often feels overwhelmed.
"It just gets too emotional, too frustrating," she explained. "You have to take that moment for yourself. You really have to."
But some parents do have trouble coping with the stress. That's where Family and Childcare Resources of N.E.W. comes in.
