A massive pest control campaign has begun in Kahurangi National Park.
At 260,000 hectares, Kahurangi is the largest area the Department of Conservation (DOC) is tackling in its Battle for our Birds 1080 campaign.
The extensive predator control is in response to a heavy beech seed-fall which has driven up rodent numbers in beech forests around the South Island.
The park has been split into five operations, one of which began today. The other four will start when weather permits.
Non-toxic baits have been aerially applied in a ''pre-feed'' to familiarise the rodents with eating bait pellets, then bait containing 1080 will be dropped in the area.
DOC acting Takaka conservation services manager Greg Napp said rats were at high levels in many parts of the park.
''Without the predator control we could lose some populations of critically endangered long-tailed bats and also whio in areas where there is no trapping in place to help protect them.''
He said the operations were timed to prevent increased predator attacks on nesting birds.
In some areas, deer repellent will be added to the bait at the request of the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association.
In addition to the Kahurangi operation, TBfree will carry out aerial 1080 pest control over 50,000 hectares of conservation land in the Mokihinui area, where high numbers of rats were recorded in August.

IT was a victory for people power, as residents on Morgan Street, St Paul's, barricaded their road to prevent the council from painting newRPZ bays.
But that victory could be short loved as the local authority stillvowsto implement the scheme designed to stop commuters clogging up Bristol's streets.
People who live on Morgan Street say they havetried writing and making phone calls to make clear their objections. And yesterday, theytook their fight out into the street itself, erecting barricades and standing fast to stop council contractors from painting lines and putting up signs to bring in the parking restrictions.
When cones were put out on Monday by the council to mark areas of the road due to be painted and signs were erected warning that cars left there in the morning would be towed away, they sprang into action.
The residents removed all the signs overnight and refused to move their vehicles.Bemused contractors arrived at around 7.30am to find the street full of unhappy residents, with at least 20 cars still parked in place.
When more workers turned up trying to enter the road, residents created a barricade from wheelie bins and any other objects to hand, including an old microwave and a computer monitor.
They succeeded in forcing the council to postpone work to make their road the latest subject to Mayor George Fergusons expansion of residents' parking zones.
Abda Parveen, who lives in Morgan Street with her family, said no one there was in favour of the scheme.
She said: We never opted for this. We already have enough to pay for with car tax and council tax. This is just another way to make money.
