A Wellington plumber has been fined $4,500 at the Porirua District Court, following investigation in to work carried out in Westport.

In a judgment released today, by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) it was revealed Michael Guy had been convicted on a total of three charges.

One charge was for carrying out sanitary plumbing in a manner dangerous to life, and two charges were for carrying out sanitary plumbing without authorisation.

Mr Guy pleaded guilty to all three charges of carrying out sanitary plumbing outside the limitations of his authorisation issued by the Board.

Mr Guy failed to ensure that his work was adequately supervised at the two homes in Westport where he carried out the work. His authorisation required him to have a supervisor to test and check the work was done competently and in compliance with the building code.

In each home, he did work on the hot water cylinders including installing a tempering valve onto the open vent line of a hot water cylinder connected to a wetback. The work did not comply with regulatory requirements and was not checked by his supervisor.

Non-compliant work of this nature creates a health and safety risk to the consumer and could result in implosion or explosion and serious injury. In one case the hot water cylinder did implode as a result of the tempering valve installed. Reimbursement to the property owner for the damaged hot water cylinder was made by Mr Guy.

Max Pedersen, Chief Executive of the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board, said:

"There are serious health and safety risks associated with sanitary plumbing carried out by a person working outside the limitations of their authorisation. This type of defective plumbing work has the potential to cause injury and serious damage to the home.

All authorised tradespeople are required to carry an authorisation card."

Mystic - Jerry Hayes is a little like an itinerant preacher, traveling the country to inspire the already faithful and maybe convert some doubters.

Hayes, a veteran expert in honey bee health based at Monsanto's St. Louis headquarters, is visiting the company's Mystic office to give a talk today to staff and members of the public about promising work to develop a biological remedy for varroa mites, the parasite that carries numerous viruses to commercial and backyard bee colonies.

The use of chemical pesticides to control varroa mites, first found in this country in 1987, is believed to be one of the main factors in the "perfect storm" of forces causing Colony Collapse Disorder, the name for the phenomena that first began wiping out hives in 2006.

Hayes said he's been giving talks like this at various locations both to educate Monsanto staff and the public about a relatively new line of work going on at the international agricultural products company.

"With the public," he said, "one of my big struggles is that everybody hates Monsanto."

While he will address the often contentious issue of the company's work with genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, if someone in the audience brings it up, the main subject of his talk will be the promising research toward developing a biological control that would enable beekeepers to control varroa mites without using pesticides. Called Remembee, the product, which would enable bees to acquire genetic resistance to the mites, is about five to seven years from being commercially available, he said.

Monsanto took on the project when it acquired the Israeli company Beelogics in 2011, and the technology has potential applications for other crop pest control needs, he said.

"For the Monsanto staff, it's motivating for them to hear that their company is working on improving honey bee health," he said.

"For the public," said Hayes, who was the chief of the apiary section for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services before joining Monsanto in 2012, "I want them to pause and think about this a little more. The government and the USDA have not been able to do anything" to combat Colony Collapse Disorder but a private corporation may be closing in on a solution.

How much does it cost to kill a rabbit? More than $7100, if you are the NSW government, whose controversial hunting in national parks program has garnered ridicule from across the political spectrum.

Official figures show the government's so-called "pest control" trial, which began earlier this year, has killed fewer than 200 animals at a cost of $1.416 million.

The bill to taxpayers has cast serious doubt on the cost-effectiveness of the amateur hunting program, which was introduced after former premier Barry O'Farrell struck a deal with the Shooters and Fishers Party.

Some 198 animals, almost 70 per cent of them rabbits, were killed over five operations between February and August. It equates to $7152 for each animal. The government says most spending involved set-up costs.

Other animals killed included goats, pigs, deer and foxes. The operations involved 43 National Parks and Wildlife Service staff shifts.

Twelve parks are open to the program, which allows volunteer hunters to shoot animalsin an area covering 485,000 hectares.

Not a single animal was killed over two weekend operations at Woomargama National Park and the Goonoo State Conservation Area, despite up to seven staff being rostered on each day.
