Duke Energy Progress says it is launching an initiative to modernize outdoor lighting across its service area.

The utility says it's received approval from the N.C. Utilities Commission to replace more than 100,000 mercury vapor street and area lights with advanced light emitting diode, or LED, fixtures.

It will soon propose a replacement plan for Duke Energy Progress customers in South Carolina.

The project is part of the utility's Lighting Modernization Program, which would replace mercury vapor fixtures in Duke Energy Progress' North Carolina service area over a two-year period beginning next month.

About 25 percent of outdoor lights on the Duke Energy Progress system use mercury vapor fixtures, identifiable by their cool, bluish light. Most fixtures were installed decades ago and are nearing the end of their useful life.

As of Aug. 15, smoking has been banned in Harvard Yard.

Over a month after Harvard banned the use of all forms of tobacco in the Yard, Harvard staff and students said that the implementation of the ban has been smooth, with its impact localized to a few areas.

According to Maureen McCarthy, manager of Harvard Yard and the freshman dormitories, the University has been enforcing the smoking ban similarly to the way it enforces the ban against biking through the Yard. Staff members, including members of Securitas and Yard Operations, approach smokers and ask them to either desist or leave the Yard.

McCarthy said she has not heard any reports about hostile or uncooperative responses from either students or tourists.

Were not really aggressively implementing it, but people slowly learn that its a policy, and they get the word out, she said.

Students interviewed around the Yard this week said that they were aware of the ban and pleased it is in place, though many also noted that they had not found issue with smokers in the Yard before the prohibition was put in place Aug. 15.

I think its probably a good thing, but its never been a problem, Caroline L. Ferguson 17, a Crimson sports editor, said of the ban. If I was around people smoking I think itd probably bother me, but I didnt notice before that it was [a problem].

According to McCarthy, although smokers in the Yard were not considered a huge issue before the ban, there were certain locations in the Yard that were popular for smokers. At locations such as Widener Gate, the steps of Lamont Library, and entryway D of Wigglesworth Hall, cigarette butts posed a cleanup problem for landscape maintenance staff members.

According to the University Department of Health Promotion and Education, the ban was put in place to ensure a safe, healthy environment for people to walk, study, be active, [and] engage with each other.

Student smokers interviewed for this story said that the ban has made smoking more inconvenient and prompted them to change where they smoke, but it has not promoted any broad lifestyle changes.

NORMAL The Edwardsville swimming team is no longer one of the best kept secrets in the southern Illinois swimming landscape.

The Tigers, who have never been able to compete as a team before this season, won eight of 12 varsity events on Saturday at the Iron Invitational in Normal to win their first-ever meet in their first try.

Thanks to the generous donation of Sharon Fruit, along with the tireless effort of the EGHM Foundation, EHS has its own pool the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center and its own team. Prior to this season, the Tigers only were allowed to compete in the postseason as individuals.

I feel like this was a collective of all the work put in over the last 50 years of Edwardsville swimmers in high school and club, said Edwardsville head coach Christian Rhoten, who swam for the Tigers during his prep career. In the high school world, this is the first time weve come out and shown our face. I think we proved that even though we are brand new, we are a strong team and we plan on making some serious waves this season and in the future.

Edwardsville won Saturdays eight-team Iron Invitational with 370 team points. The Tigers were followed by: host Normal Community (340), Lincoln-Way East (314), Metamora (276), Galesburg (261), United Township (177) and Normal West (165).

Saturday wasnt the first time the Tigers have been in the pool. Many of them have been with the YMCA Breakers a club team coached by Bob Rettle along with Water Works and Sunset Hills summer teams.

It was, however, the first time the swimmers have been in the pool with the Tiger paw on their swimsuits.

This kind of brings us to tears, because we have been waiting for this moment for so long, said junior Kate May, who won two individuals events, including setting a pool record in the 100-yard butterfly.

May continued, When it was confirmed that Sharon Fruit had donated so much and then we had others donate even more money and that we were going to have this really nice pool, I just thought about it one night and I was so happy.

May also won the 100-yard freestyle.

THE son of an accused murderer has been ordered by a court to stop land clearing on his property near Moree amid claims of unlawful damage to native vegetation.

The temporary injunction against Croppa Creek farmer Grant Turnbull was granted by Justice Rachel Pepper in the Land and Environment on Friday, restraining him from clearing on his property, Colorado, for five days.

The extraordinary move was brought on by Ross Fox from the Office of Environment Heritage (OEH), who submitted an affidavit claiming only a small proportion of native vegetation now remains on Colorado by reason of the continued unlawful clearing on that property.

The OEH submitted the interlocutory relief was to restrain Mr Turnbull from any further land clearing on the property which would contravene the Native Vegetation Act 2003.

Mr Turnbull is the son of Ian Robert Turnbull the man accused of the shooting murder of 51-year-old OEH compliance officer Glen Turner, in July. Ian Turnbull was last week fined more than $140,000 after being convicted of illegally clearing native vegetation on the same property between November 2011 and January 2012.

Grant Turnbull has been ordered to remediate an area as a result of his fathers actions, but he too is being prosecuted in the Land and Environment Court, amid allegations of unlawful clearing between June 2012 and January 2013.

On Friday, the OEH tried to have the temporary injunction heard on an ex-parte basis, without Mr Turnbull present, arguing further clearing would occur if Mr Turnbull was made aware of the order sought.

The OEH told the court, that in addition, investigators are examining further alleged illegal clearing on Colorado since January last year, based on satellite and aerial imagery.
