MOORESVILLE Earth-Kind Inc., a maker of all-natural, nontoxic pest control products, plans to lease 50,000 square feet of manufacturing space and eventually employ 380 full-time workers, the company announced Monday.
Earth-Kind, based in Bismarck, N.D., develops and manufactures indoor products to control rodents, pests and odors.
The company will invest $5.8 million in new machinery and equipment and initially employ 14 full-time workers. The company plans to grow to 380 full-time workers over four years.
The site at 346 E. Plaza Drive (N.C. 150 East) is the former Draymore curtain plant. The Pit Indoor Kart Racing facility has operated a 70,000-square-foot road course-style track in part of the complex since 2007 and will continue to do so once Earth-Kind moves into the complex, a track employee said Monday.
Earth-Kind was named a 2014 Top 30 Most Innovative USA Bio-Based Company by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and to the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies.
Customers include John Deere, Tractor Supply Co., ACE Hardware and Menards.
Earth-Kind selected Mooresville because of its high quality of life and schools and its location geographically to serve its growing customer base, CEO Kari Warberg Block said.
One particular item that made Earth-Kind Inc. an important project for Mooresville is their company policy of supporting individuals with disabilities, Robert Carney, executive director of the Mooresville South Iredell Economic Development Corp., said in the announcement. Many of the jobs offered are made available to the disabled.
Earth-Kind Inc. invests in and retrofits their machinery and equipment to ensure that individuals with disabilities working in their facility have a safe working environment, Carney said. These are the type of leaders and companies we want located here.

RALEIGH, N.C. Duke Energy Progress says it is launching an initiative to modernize outdoor lighting across its service area.
The utility says it's received approval from the N.C. Utilities Commission to replace more than 100,000 mercury vapor street and area lights with advanced light emitting diode, or LED, fixtures.
It will soon propose a replacement plan for Duke Energy Progress customers in South Carolina.
The project is part of the utility's Lighting Modernization Program, which would replace mercury vapor fixtures in Duke Energy Progress' North Carolina service area over a two-year period beginning next month.
About 25 percent of outdoor lights on the Duke Energy Progress system use mercury vapor fixtures, identifiable by their cool, bluish light. Most fixtures were installed decades ago and are nearing the end of their useful life.

A Queens newspaper publisher was arrested Thursday after an altercation with her neighbor led her to drive her car into a tree on his lawn, police said Monday.
Patricia Adams, 55, who runs The Forum, screamed, cursed and flailed her arms as officers tried to handcuff her in front of her Howard Beach home about 10 p.m., authorities said.
Do you know who the f--- I am? I run The Forum, Im going to have your job. F--- you, Adams told cops, according to a criminal complaint.
But Adams, who claims her neighbor had been harassing her for months, said the police report was mostly false.
Im not a person who looks for special treatment, which is why I resent what was in that report, she said. Im gonna have your job. I never said that! I never said one blessed word that Im going to have your job!
Adams said she introduced herself, telling cops she has been serving this precinct and community for 20 years.
Her car never got near her neighbors lawn, she said.
Im not a thug, Adams said. I will beware not to believe everything I read in a criminal complaint.
The weekly newspaper publisher said the neighbor had boxed her car into her driveway with five garbage cans Thursday, which started the argument.
She was taken to the 106th Precinct stationhouse and then to Central Booking, where she spent the rest of the night and much of the following day, getting out at 5 p.m. on Friday.
