Mary Davis, diagnosed with throat cancer in October 2013 and tongue cancer in March, needed more help around her house than her husband could provide.
The Rankin County woman's vocal chords were removed and the partial removal of her tongue has affected her ability to whisper and speak.
Jerry Davis had to take a leave of absence from work to help care for his petite wife.
"I sweep and get it all cleaned up, and the first thing she does is gets the broom. And I'm trying to convince her I swept," said 56-year-old Jerry Davis.
A reference from the American Cancer Society directed the couple to Cleaning for a Reason. The Texas-based nonprofit helps women battling cancer by providing free house cleanings, and local partner Foster's Cleaning Service lightens the load.
Cleaning for a Reason was founded in 2006 and has helped women with cancer receive more than $3.7 million worth of free house cleanings. Approximately 1,000 maid services in the United States and Canada partner with the foundation.
Mississippi has three maid services providing free cleaning in the Jackson metro Foster's Cleaning Service, LLC in Brandon, Wilgins Professional Cleaning Company, LLC in Byram and Magic Maids of MS in Madison.
"I had a cousin who passed a couple years ago from colorectal cancer, and I started looking for a service and came across Cleaning for a Reason," said co-owner Celisa Frith, co-owner of Foster's Cleaning Service. "Mary is my only client with cancer, but there are so many women who don't know about it."

"My husband was mowing the lawn, and as I watched him, I saw how much trouble he had emptying out the bag when it was full of debris," said an inventor from Trussville, Ala. "This inspired me to come up with a better way to get rid of lawn clippings."
She developed the DISPOSABLE PLASTIC LAWN BAG to make it easier to dispose of lawn clippings. The accessory reduces the stress and strain normally involved in emptying a full lawn-mower bag. This eliminates hassles and frustrations, and saves time and effort. Furthermore, the invention is adaptable for use with both walk-behind and ride-on mowers.
The original design was submitted to the Birmingham office of InventHelp. It is currently available for licensing or sale to manufacturers or marketers. Best new residential building: Cabin 2 by Maddison Architects embodies the idea that a house can be landscape. Photo: Will Watt
Rooted among the Mornington Peninsula's melaleuca trees, Cabin 2 embodies the idea "that a house can be landscape", according to its architect, Peter Maddison. With blackbutt plywood floors and stringyback internal lining and cladding, the Blairgowrie building that "grows out of the land" won the best new residential building at this year's Australian Timber Design Awards, announced on Thursday.
Maddison's landscape metaphor complements the house's dominant building material. Indeed we regularly invoke allusions to timber when we describe the city as the "built environment" and the street having a "fine grain". Optimistically, it perhaps suggests a renewed appreciation for this precious yet richly diverse natural resource.
Today we prefer to express the materiality of the grain and its natural colour and are less likely to paint or mask our weatherboards. Preservatives can maintain a particular shade of spotted gum brown or jarrah's almost black red or it can be left to weather and go permanently grey. In Maddison's case, he chose to lime the stringybark "to take the honey-colour out and to make it all softer on the eye".
The interior of last year's award winner, the Fairhaven residence, employed just one timber. It was as if the house had been carved from the heart of the tree itself. Architect John Wardle exposed blackbutt's subtleties: its clear fine grain, its lack of knots and its consistent colour. "It's often more powerful to use one material purposefully and strongly, rather than having a series of materials that need to compete," he says.

Consistency is also at work in the House in the Woods, which gave Wilson Architecture this year's award for best renovation. On a large, heavily forested block in Donvale, the architects integrated the interior spaces with the landscape.
"They used spotted gum's durable nature as decking and carried it through inside for continuity," says Stephen Mitchell, sustainability program manager from the Timber Development Association. "It's the same timber, just polished inside."
Timber's ability to withstand the elements is rated on a durability scale from one to four. Hardwood timbers such as iron bark and spotted gum are class one timbers that last longest. Coating timbers can protect them from moisture impregnation and fungus.
"In Victoria, where the environment is not as tough [as Queensland], it's cooler and there's not so much sunlight so you can get away with lower durability timbers when you use them externally," says Mitchell.

You can see and feel the change of seasons. Fall color is starting to appear, pansies, mums and asters are in the garden center and your thoughts are turning to preparing your landscape for winter.
Those in warm climates are switching to winter annuals, while those in colder regions are fortifying their landscapes for the cold winter ahead. No matter where you live, invest some time in preparing your landscape for the change in seasons. Dedicating some time now will pay off with healthier more beautiful plants next spring.
Continue to mow the lawn high as long as it continues to grow. Theres no need to cut it short unless that is the look you prefer.
Fertilize the grass with a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer. Fall fertilization provides the greatest benefit to your lawn and gives you the best value for the time and money invested.
Those in cooler regions growing bluegrass, fescue and perennial ryegrass should make a final application between Halloween and Thanksgiving before the ground freezes.
Those in warmer climates growing centipede, Bermuda and zoysia should also fertilize around Labor Day. However, be sure to make the last fall application at least one month prior to the average first killing frost.
Shred leaves as they fall. Leave some on the lawn to add organic matter and nutrients to the soil. As long as you can see the grass blades through the shredded leaves your lawn will be fine.
Use the rest of the shredded leaves in your compost pile, as mulch on top of the soil or as a soil amendment. Just dig a two to three inch layer into the top 12 inches of annual or new planting beds. These leaves will break down and add organic matter. By spring the leaves will decompose and the garden bed will be ready to cultivate and plant.
Plant a few bulbs now for a colorful early spring display. Incorporate compost, aged manure or other organic matter into the planting area. Add a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer at the time of planting. In general, plant bulbs two to three times their vertical diameter deep. Follow specific planting and spacing directions on the package or tag.

THE man accused of murdering an environmental compliance officer has been ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs after being convicted of illegal land clearing the very offence his alleged victim had investigated.
Ian Robert Turnbull remains in jail, accused of murdering 51-year-old Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) compliance officer Glen Turner, but will fight for his release, lodging abid for Supreme Court bail.
Yesterday, the issue at the heart of the alleged murder was back in the Land and Environment Court in Sydney, as the 79-year-old farmer was convicted of bulldozing more than 3000 trees on properties owned by his son, Grant, and grandson Cory at Croppa Creek, near Moree.
Justice Terry Sheahan said Turnbull had not shown any genuine contrition or remorse for his offending beyond pleading guilty.
The defendant flagrantly disregarded the consequences of his actions, by continuing clearing in the knowledge that he was likely to soon receive a stop-work order, Justice Sheahan said.
Turnbull was fined $140,000 for the land clearing, after receiving a small discount for pleading guilty, and was also ordered to pay the OEHs legal and investigation costs, estimated to be about $172,000.
In his judgement, Justice Sheahan said because Turnbull was a leader in his sector, specific and general deterrence was needed in his penalty.
It must be substantial enough to deter others, as well as himself, from clearing native vegetation, particularly in this area, where unlawful clearing appears to have been an ongoing concern for the community, the judgement read.
