Mr. Appliance of New York City Wins Franchisee of the Year Award

    - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WACO, Texas (PRWEB) September 19, 2014

Mr. Appliance of New York City, owned by Stuart Kauder, earned the Mr. Appliance Franchisee of the Year Award at The Dwyer Group International Conference September 7-10 in Orlando, Florida.

The Franchisee of the Year Award is the highest honor than can be earned by a franchisee in the Mr. Appliance network. The winning franchise must show consistent growth through proper training and management of the organization, consistent high sales volume and quality customer service.

This award shows just how committed and dedicated our team is at providing excellent service to our customers, said Kauder. The Mr. Appliance system helps us build long-term relationships with our customers. We will continue to maintain professional, customer driven care and services.

The Mr. Appliance team is thrilled Stuart won the Franchisee of the Year Award, said Mr. Appliance President Doug Rogers. He really understands what Mr. Appliance is all about, and we all feel blessed they are on our team.

Kauder also received the Top Gun Award, Sales Leader of the Year Award and the $1 Million Benchmark Award.

The Top Gun award goes to franchise owners who achieve top sales and reach operation benchmarks. The Top Gun recipients represent the top 10 percent of Mr. Appliance franchise owners across North America.

The idea of Top Gun was established by the Navy in the 1960s as a way to give training and credit to elite fighter pilots, said Rogers. Taking a page from the Naval Top Gun Program, each year we recognize our franchise leaders for their accomplishments and dedication to the trade. It takes dedication, hard work, expertise and commitment to reach the Top Gun goal and we are honored to have these winners on our team.

The Top Gun designation was inspired by the 1980s movie of the same moniker. Don Dwyer, the late founder of Mr. Appliances parent company, The Dwyer Group, initiated the concept. He felt the top franchise owners went the extra mile and did what it took to be exemplary.

The Sales Leader of the Year Award is presented to the Mr. Appliance franchisee that reports the highest sales volume during the award year.

New Rules Could Ban Smoking In Gardens And Patios

    - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

"It's going to affect us. It will affect our income and then what we're able to put back into the economy." (see attached video)

Small outdoor dining areas like this one at Stumpy's Pub in Rockford could soon be ruled out for smokers. That's because new rules being considered by the Illinois legislature could ban smoking outside in gardens and patios. It's a proposal one of the owners of Stumpy's Pub says would be bad for business.

"A lot of places have spent a lot of money on developing smoking areas and trying to go by the rules that they developed the first time for this. And, now once you spent tens of thousands or a hundred-thousand dollars on something like this, now all of a sudden they come in and they're going to change the rules on it," said JayGesner.

Senator Dave Syverson, 35th District, agrees and calls the new regulations unnecessary. "People like the idea that it's smoke free inrestaurants but they don't oppose the idea if someone wants to smoke outside and its worked. So why come in and change that and create hardship for smokers but also restaurants," said Senator Dave Syverson.

Syverson is urging fellow legislators on the rules committee to vote down what he calls an overreach by the governor.

"What we have is the governor and the health department trying to change a rule not a law but trying to change a rule that would ban smokers outside of restaurants even though it's following the law," said Syverson.

And, for the sake of his business and others like him- Gesner agrees.

"Every customer we lose we have to order less, we need less help, its just a chain affect on the whole economy."

The fear and hopelessness behind the deadly attack on Ebola workers in Guinea

    - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When the Ebola outbreak made a resurgencein Guinea in early August, after earlier showing signs of stabilizing, Moise Mamy knew what he needed to do.

The Guinean pastor had already been traveling from remote village to remote village three times a week to spread awareness about preventing and containing the deadly virus. But as the outbreak flared up again, Mamy and a team of workers from the non-governmental organization Eau de la Vie (Water of Life)began going to the villages five times a week.

The instruction they provided was simple, focusing on washing and water purification practices. But Mamy was convinced that more visits to the isolated areas to was necessary to bring an end to the deadly epidemic.

It was exhausting work, and the team often encountered resistance, Mamy told others; but, he said, it needed to be done.

"This Ebola is a menace that can overrun the country," Mamywarned recently in an e-mail to the leader of a U.S.aid organization.

On Tuesday, Mamy and his team took a truck that was already damaged by rocks that had been thrown at them during visits to other remote villages and drove to Wome, in the forested, southeastern part of Guinea.

This time, they enlisted local officials to help ease the tensions and fear that run rampantin thatpart of thecountry, which is near where the deadly outbreak began.

"The meeting started off well; the traditional chiefs welcomed the delegation with 10 kola nuts as a traditional greeting," said a resident who was present at the meeting, a man identified as "Yves" told the Guardian. But a group of young people arrived, Yves said, and they began throwing stones.

Then, some members of Mamy's team were dragged away.

    Then, the unthinkable happened.

Glenelg stone farmhouse gets Show House makeover

    - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

An 1805 stone manor house is Historic Ellicott City's 2014 Decorator Show House. Situated on 110 acres in Glenelg, Meriwether Farm, a two-story 5,757-square-foot home, received a three-month makeover by more than a dozen interior designers in preparation for the show, which opens Satuday, Sept. 20, and runs through Oct. 19.

"It is such a popular event," said Joyce Pope, executive director of HEC. "We generally have 150 visitors per day."

Those visitors will get to explore a house that rebounded after a devastating fire in 1950 that destroyed most of its interior rooms except the original staircase and front walls.

"A good section of the house caught fire," Pope said. "They tried to salvage as much of the historic aspects as they could."

By all accounts, the house, which sat vacant a few years and is on the market, was in sound shape, Pope said. While the outside needed work, such as landscaping, the inside needed little compared to past Decorator Show Houses.

"These old houses are not wired for modern times," said Carroll Frey, design chair for HEC. "The kitchen needed work but the rest of the rooms were pretty darn good. No restoration work was needed. The wood floors were in excellent condition."

After work by professional designers who prepare the house, the kitchen is now one of Pope's favorite rooms in the house.

"It was ... really in need of a transfiguration," Pope said. "It is one of the most charming. I saw it had the potential."

Frey particularly likes the work done to create a gentleman's dressing room. While the committee thought the room could be a bedroom, the designer proposed a dressing room instead.

"There is vintage clothing in it and ... some very good antiques," Frey said. "I really like the effort and energy that was put into the gentleman's dressing room."

    Threepwood changes proposed

    - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Threepwood Homestead. Photo supplied.

    K. Mactaggart and J. Crane have applied to the Queenstown Lakes District Council to undertake additions and alterations to the Threepwood Homestead, overlooking Lake Hayes, which dates back to 1909.

The homestead is a category 2 heritage building under the council's district plan.

The application, prepared by John Edmonds and Associates, said the large timber frame house was run down and needed to be upgraded to provide for ''suitable living and more durable construction for its future longevity'' and enable it to be used as a family home.

The property was owned by Threepwood Nominees Ltd. The company director had provided written approval for the work, as had the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

Changes proposed to the homestead included the removal of plaster to expose the original weatherboard and reinstatement or exposure of the original architectural features, including the original veranda and windows.

Reinstating the service wing, which had been removed, was also proposed, along with the ''rearrangement'' of internal spaces and the addition of a new, modern veranda to the north.

It was also proposed to repaint the property to represent its original colours - an off-white exterior and a dark grey roof.

Consent was also sought for a traditional two-bedroom guest cottage at the rear of the existing footprint of a three-car garage, which would be removed.

Two garages were proposed - one behind the house and one where the existing cottage was. The cottage would also be removed.
