The new kitchen has a handcrafted glass table attached to the island, bamboo cabinetry and a wine refrigerator.
With summer at a close, many San Diegans are left with fond vacation memories of warm and breezy islands. One San Diego couple wanted to capture that tranquil and relaxing island feel year-round in their kitchen remodel.
Our team worked with the homeowners to bring their Caribbean-inspired kitchen to life with tropical colors, accents of white and an alluring backsplash.
Reminiscent of sand and sea, the new kitchen balances fresh neutrals with vivid blues. A bold backsplash of turquoise glass tile is a colorful visual centerpiece in the room. A meticulously handcrafted table attached to the island was built from 1-inch solid cast glass. The glass is pitted on the bottom with a wavelike effect that gives a floating sensation and resembles the ocean floor.
Bamboo cabinetry creates ample storage at varying levels. Textured glass doors on selected upper cabinets have a waterlike appearance with a fluidity that supports the ocean theme, while open shelves allow the clients to display colorful glassware and favorite mementos from their travels.
A backsplash of turquoise glass tile is a colorful centerpiece in the new kitchen.
The prominent wine refrigerator is perfect for entertaining guests or just enjoying a glass of wine.
In a kitchen designed to celebrate the beach life, the wood floor easily welcomes sandy feet. The new room inspires remembrance of past travels while providing a relaxing retreat from everyday life.

The first tenant is expected to move into downtown Rochester's latest office building development in December, though the entire seven-story complex is not expected to be completed until the spring.
Titan Development and Investments, of Rochester, is building the $17 million building called H3 Plaza at 300 S. Broadway. Construction began in March, when Titan demolished the former C.O. Brown building that previously stood on the site. H3 is a reference to Rochester's Historic Third Street, which is directly across Broadway from the building.

Three men were injured when a building under construction on the wharf in Newellton, on Cape Sable Island, collapsed early Thursday evening with them inside.
All three were extricated within two hours of the collapse, which happened at about 5:40 p.m. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, said RCMP Staff Sgt. Jeff West.
The building was a fish plant, said West.
Because it was a workplace accident, staff from the Labour Department would inspect the scene, he said just after 7 p.m.
After initial reports of the collapse, a LifeFlight helicopter was called out, but none of the three had injuries that required an emergency flight, said West.
Mike Swim, station chief at the Island & Barrington Passage Fire Department, said the three men were working on the building near the wharf in Newellton when the roof came down.
Swim said two of the men escaped from the building with minor injuries, but the third was badly hurt as he fell from the roof and was trapped in its trusses.
The man was rescued after firefighters spent 45 minutes cutting through the trusses with reciprocating saws, Swim said.
The emergency call to Highway 330 in Newellton came in at 5:40 p.m., said Stacey Brown, spokeswoman for Emergency Health Services.
Three ambulances also raced to the scene, as well as local fire departments, whose volunteers managed to rescue the three workers.

TALAMBAN Barangay Captain Dario Arcilla faces a criminal case in court for issuance of a cease-and-desist order (CDO).
He was indicted for allegedly usurping the authority of the Office of the Building Official (OBO) when he issued such order to stop a house construction early last year.
As a barangay captain, he had no authority to issue a cease and desist orders, as this is not among the powers and duties vested in him, read the disposition of Cebu City Assistant Prosecutor Leah Cruz indicting Arcilla before the Municipal Trial Court in Cities for usurpation of official functions for issuing the CDO against the construction of the house owned by Beltran Rizon.
Cruz recommended a bail of P10,000.
In 2012, Rizon filed a complaint against Arcilla for violation of Article 177 of the Revised Penal Code for usurpation of authority and grave abuse of discretion before the Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor.
Brother
Dario is the brother of Cebu City Councilor Alvin Arcilla.
In his complaint, Rizon said he planned to construct a residential house in Sitio Nasipit, Barangay Talamban.
He applied for barangay clearance but claimed that former village chief Jesus Remedio Jr. failed or refused to issue one.
Rizon then inquired from OBO in Cebu City whether he could proceed with his application for the building permit without the barangay clearance.

JOLIET If all goes as planned, the Will County Recorder of Deeds and Coroner offices will move into the former Social Security Administration building downtown before the end of the year.
County and local officials Thursday celebrated the start of construction on the building, 158 N. Scott St.
Montgomery-based Lite Construction Inc. is remodeling the 11,500-square-foot building for $1.4 million under the guidance of architecture firm Cordogan Clark & Associates.
The design includes several sustainable and energy efficient features, including a high-efficiency HVAC system, LED Lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures and recycled carpeting.
The 42-space parking lot will be renovated and the surrounding wrought iron fence reconfigured. New exterior building signs and planters will be added. The interior will be renovated and redesigned, as well.
Denise Winfrey, who chairs the Will County Board's Capital Improvements Committee, said the renovations are one of the first strategic steps to help the county move forward on its master capital plan.
Moving the coroners administrative office frees up space in the Emco Building, 57 N. Ottawa St. The Emco Building, also known as the Court Annex, houses the states attorneys office and could one day serve as space for the public defenders office.
By shifting the recorder of deeds office to the former Social Security building, County Executive Larry Walsh said the move will result in annual savings of $250,000 in lease expenses alone.
Winfrey said she was happy to see construction workers from Laborers Local 75 working Thursday.
"It's our project and we wanted our guys working," Winfrey said.

Did you know Habitat for Humanity has a home repair program? Since 2011, Habitat for Humanity has partnered with over a dozen homeowners in Archuleta County to assist with much needed repairs through Neighbors Helping Neighbors.
This program is bringing the community together by forging new partnerships, serving more people, and creating additional opportunities to volunteer and allow people to get to know their neighbors.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors partnerships have allowed for home improvements ranging from house painting to roof replacement. One of the earliest and most intensive undertakings was the leveling of a trailer home that required the replacement of several concrete slabs. Other projects have included replacement of damaged siding, replacing windows to enhance insulation and reduce loss of heat during winter months thus reducing utility expenses, repairing flooring that had been damaged by a minor flood, and replacing faulty plumbing fixtures. As with other Habitat for Humanity programs, the majority of the labor is conducted by volunteers.
To qualify for partnership with Neighbors Helping Neighbors, you must reside in the home you own and meet income guidelines. The population served generally earns between 20 and 60 percent of the area median income. Approved partners receive a zero interest, short-term loan. Partners are also required to perform a nominal amount of sweat equity hours, which can include performing some of the work on the home or providing lunches for volunteers. Habitat for Humanitys Neighbors Helping Neighbors home repair program follows the organizations mission of providing affordable and decent housing, but allows expansion of services to include greater partnerships in the community and safety for homeowners.
You can learn more about Neighbors Helping Neighbors at Loaves and Fishes on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Parish Hall, located downtown on Lewis Street. You may also contact the Habitat for Humanity office directly at 264-6960 to apply for services, make a donation or inquire about volunteering.

After years of planning and several months of site work, activity at McKees Solar Park is beginning to heat up now that the city has finished installing the 900-panel array for the 230-kilowatt solar farm off East Cleveland Avenue.
Once it goes live next month, McKees is expected to produce enough electricity to power approximately 26 to 36 homes, depending on the season, as well as reduce the citys peak power demand, lower the wholesale cost of power, generate solar renewable energy credits, bring locally-produced green energy to Newark electric users and reduce the citys carbon footprint.
Council initially approved the redevelopment of the 3.91-acre brownfield site known as McKees Park in 2012, after District 6 Councilman Stu Markham expressed interest in transforming the former municipal landfill-turned neglected park into a power source for the city.
I like the idea of being able to generate your own power, and solar seems to be the cleanest and easiest way to do it, Markham said. McKees Park, it was worth nothing to us.
Markham said the city had been collecting money though residents electric bills through Delmarva Powers Green Energy Program to pay for green energy projects, which he pushed to allocate toward creating the states first community solar park in Newark.
Public Works Director Tom Coleman said work to redevelop McKees Park began last summer and proved to be a difficult task.
The primary challenge is the brownfield itself, he said, adding that remnants of a former baseball field and basketball court in McKees Park were still intact when crews got to the site. It was still there when we started and had to be removed.
In order to minimize disturbance of the site, Coleman said, city officials met with a landfill consultant.
Workers installed a vapor barrier under the concrete slab foundation and above the stone base that functions as a lid and vents any harmful vapors through a vent pipe out above the roofline.
He said crews also dealt with drainage and settlement issues because the former park was built on top of the landfill and several months were dedicated to redesigning the panel racking system to allow for adjustments in case of future settlement.
