Benedict Cumberbatch sheds clothing for cancer research

    - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It looks as though your favorite celebrities are shedding their clothes and showing their skin for charity.

Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch, along with Takens Liam Neeson, Titanics Kate Winslet, and The Lord of the Rings Elijah Wood, are appearing in a set of photographs for the "Give Up Clothes for Good" campaign, a charity that benefits the funding for cancer research, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

An exhibit is being held by TK Maxx and Cancer Research UK which began Tuesday and lasts until Sept. 20 at the La Galleria Pall Mall in London, according to Metro UK. The cost of entry into the exhibit is around $3 (2) or a simple donation of clothing.

The photographs, taken by photographer Jason Bell, are all archived photos of various celebrities from movie stars to dancers, including a completely nude photo of British choreographer and dancer Bruno Tonioli.

As featured on The Hollywood Reporter, Cumberbatchs photo shows him waist high in a lake seeming to slowly unbutton the white dress shirt he wears. His hair is slicked back gorgeously, despite the photo being in black and white, causing many to compare his photo to that of the Mr. Darcy character from Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice.

According to Metro UK, the campaign, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary along with the exhibit, has raised more than $28 million (17.6 million) for cancer research in the United Kingdom. The campaign gathers funds as well as donations of clothing and accessories to TK Maxx stores around the UK.

Belle Knox Sheds Light On Porn Industry In New Docu-Series

    - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Becoming Belle Knox is a five part docu-series about the story of Miriam Weeks, the Duke University student who gained prominence when it was revealed she was doing porn to send herself to school.

Known by her stage name Belle Knox, also as the Duke porn star, Weeks says it was Cond Nast who came to her with the concept for the series.

I was approached by Cond Nast about doing a documentary about my life. I feel like with my story there are a lot of misunderstandings about who I am, and nuances about being a student and a sex worker, Weeks said in a report. The documentary really humanizes me. Im proof that porn stars can be real people.

Cond Nast Entertainment, the publisher behind Vogue, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker, produced the docu-series on their digital site, The Scene. The series hopes to reaffirm the idea that no one but sex workers should be able to decide whats best for sex workers.

Is porn really empowering Belle Knox or degrading her?

In the documentary, the Duke porn star talks about how she loves what she does, and why she makes no apologies for joining the adult industry to pay tuition. She also admits to having grown a great deal since she started doing porn: I think my experiences have aged me, she says in the documentary. I dont have the mind of an 18-year-old. I kind of have the mind and the emotional baggage of somebody much, much older than me.

The series is a glimpse into the world of porn, showing details like how Knox got tested for STDs among others. Both moving and illuminating, it tries to dispel the misconceptions and fantasies the public has about the industry.

In talking about how life has changed since she was outed, the struggle of attending school, and being cyber-bullied, Knox reveals the burden that sex workers are forced to bear as a consequence of the cultural condemnation of their profession. At one point, she says flatly, A lot of sh*t in my life has been ruined because of sex.

Ericsson says will stop making modems, sheds hundreds of jobs

    - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

STOCKHOLM: Swedish telecom equipment company Ericsson said on Thursday (Sep 18) that it would stop developing modems, a decision affecting almost 1,600 employees worldwide which is expected to lead to hundreds of job cuts.

The group said in a statement that it would "discontinue future development of modems" but that some of the 1,582 employees affected could be redeployed to new jobs in research and development for radio networks.

The decision marks a strategic shift for Ericsson, following an evaluation of the global modem market which the company said was subject to "strong competition, price erosion and an accelerating pace of technology innovation".

Ericsson took over the production of LTE thin modems - which smartphones use to access the Internet - after the breakup of a joint operation with the French-Italian microchip manufacturer STMicroelectronics in August 2013. The company launched its own modem a year later which it will continue to produce.

"The market has fallen. There are fewer and fewer mobile phone makers who buy separate modems - they buy them together with the processors, and we don't have processors," Ericsson's chief executive Hans Vestberg told Swedish news agency TT. "Instead we have decided to focus more on our core business, where we are strongest, and that is radio (wireless) technology."

The company plans to expand its research and development activity in radio networks, particularly within "small cells" - low-powered transmitters for mobile phone data networks - creating about 500 jobs.

Ericsson currently employs 1,582 in its modem operations in Sweden, India, Germany, China and Finland.

Constrction on Hyatt Hotel, conference space in original Aurora begins

    - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

AURORA Construction on a new, full service Hyatt Hotel and conference center in the Fitzsimons Village across from the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora began Wednesday after a groundbreaking on site.

The City of Aurora partnered with Kentucky-based commercial developer Corporex Colorado on the $90 million project nearly three years ago, shortly after Corporex opened a 153-room Springhill Suites Hotel by Marriott at 13400 E. Colfax Ave.

The new Hyatt Hotel and city-owned conference centerwill go up directly south of the Springhill Suites, on about three acres of land. The Fitzsimons Village project is about 20 developable acres of mixed use and retail space on the south side of Colfax Avenue, between Peoria to Potomac streets. Corporex is the developer for the Fitzsimons Village project.

"This is something the Corporex has always envisioned since we started working out here," said Mark Witkiewicz, chief operating officer of Corporex. "It's something that that Aurora has always wanted, too. The city is truly our partner in this project."

Aurora issued just under $28 million in bonds to help pay for the development. All of the money will be paid back to the city through property and sales taxes on the 249-room Hyatt Hotel.

The city will own and operate its first business-centric conference center, which tops off around 30,000 square feet, as well as an adjacent, 500-space parking garage.

"This hotel and conference center will only add to the betterment of the neighborhood, the campus and the city,"Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan said. "I think when we look back on it, this is what we'll say really marked a change in what's happened in this part of Aurora."

In February, the Aurora Urban Renewal Authority was authorized to slice the Fitzsimons Village project out of the original, more than 500 acre Fitzsimons Health Science District urban renewal plan and create a new urban renewal plan for what it now calls Fitzsimons Boundary Area II.

A new, 25-year tax increment financing option was then set in motion to help fund all Fitzsimons Boundary Area II projects, which will eventually include 490 apartments and a seven-story, 208,000 square foot office building by Corporex.

John Harney, president of the University of Colorado Hospital, said the hotel will help to fill a dire need for temporary patient and family accommodations around the medical campus, as well as keeping teaching seminars and business conferences on site, instead of in Denver.

    Restaurant to replace Clocktower building

    - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    JOSEPH JOHNSON

DEMOLISHED: The Clocktower in Hornby has been torn down to make way for a restaurant.

The landmark Clocktower building in Hornby is being replaced by a national restaurant chain.

The 1960s building was deemed uneconomic to repair after it was damaged in the December 2011 quakes, just a year after it was stripped back and refitted.

David Cresswell, director of building owner Epoch, said the company wanted to keep the building, but it was not financially viable to do so.

Demolition began three weeks ago and is expected to be completed by the end of next month.

Construction of a new single-storey building, which will house a national restaurant chain, will begin by the end of the year, Cresswell said. It was expected the new building would be finished by the middle of next year.

Cresswell would not say which restaurant chain was the new tenant. The name would be released in about a month, he said.

Relief denied for Wynnewood Shopping Center restaurant plan

    - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Cheryl Allison callison@mainlinemedianews.com

The Lower Merion Zoning Hearing Board voted Sept. 16 to deny Federal Realty Investment Trusts request to modify conditions imposed in 1953, when the property was being developed with a John Wanamakers department store.

The vote, in which members Kenneth Brier and Charles Davidson participated, was based in part on jurisdictional issues. However, the board also determined that relief to add several thousand square feet of building space was not warranted on the basis that the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners, apparently unaware of the building limits, had earlier approved a development plan for a new restaurant pad site.

The case goes back to 2013, when township commissioners, in a hard-fought decision, approved Federal Realtys preliminary plan of land development calling for demolition of an unused postal service building in the rear parking lot. Construction of a restaurant building with a large covered outdoor seating area, nearly doubling the size of the existing building, was proposed.

Federal Realty appealed that decision, which imposed limits on hours and a ban on outdoor music, among other conditions, in response to concerns raised by neighbors about the proximity of the restaurant to homes in the Shortridge neighborhood. (The restaurant tenant, a Mad Mex restaurant and bar, recently opened in a different location in the shopping center, inside the former Borders Books building.)

Related: View photos of Mad Mex at Wynnewood Shopping Center.

It was only after the plans received approval that the 1953 conditions were rediscovered. Federal Realty then appealed Zoning Officer Michael Wylies determination that the conditions still applied, even though other expansions had occurred over the years, exceeding the 1953 limits.

The company asked the zoning board to eliminate or modify a number of the old conditions, leading to lengthy hearings at which the township, represented by its solicitor, Gilbert High, and the Shortridge Civic Association vigorously opposed the request.

In March, the zoning board grated partial relief, permitting existing square footage to remain, also allowing a previously approved but unbuilt elevator addition. But it ruled that Federal Realty would have to return to seek further relief for the restaurant expansion, pending court action on the appeal.

Instead, the shopping center owner withdrew its appeal, accepting the conditions of preliminary plan approval. Saying that it wanted to pick up where it had left off on the restaurant plan, and applied for the additional relief. Hearings were held on the matter over two nights in July. Continued...
