Windows, doors & more: Preparations underway for NARI Fall Home & Remodeling Show

    - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WEST ALLIS(WITI) Its the sights and sounds of a remodeling project before the real remodeling begins.

There willbe people setting up all through the day on Thursday and doing some spit polishing on Friday morning before we open at 10 a.m., said Milwaukee NARISpokesperson Dave Amoroso.

300 booths are in the process of being set up at State Fair Parks Wisconsin Expo Center for the 24th Annual MilwaukeeNARI Fall Home and Remodeling Show.

This is really a great opportunity for these Milwaukee NARImember contractors to really show off what they can do for local homeowners, said Amoroso.

Some of the booths are pretty elaborate, including that of MukwonagoRemodeling Co-Owner Scott Riemer.

Well have 10 employees setting up and it takes us about 10 hours, so about 100 man hours, said Reimer.

With a captive audience at the show, Riemer says the long set-up hours are worth it to grab peoples attention.

People all the time, theyll walk in and usually the response is, Honey come here, this is what I want,' said Reimer.

Visitors will have plenty of options as its one-stop shopping.

If youre looking for windows for example, you can find several window display companies. If youre looking for HVAC, or kitchen remodeling or bathroom remodeling whatever it might be for the home, said Amoroso.

Shotgun and cleaning solution added to homicide trial evidence

    - September 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A sawed-down shotgun and a container of all purpose cleaning solution were the focus in Tuesday's continuation of the trial for Jason Gardner, who is accused of shooting and killing Pennsylvania College of Technology student Terrell Henderson-Littles on Jan. 9, 2013.

Gardner and fellow gang member Mirad Shabazz were meeting with Henderson-Littles to buy marijuana when the slaying took place.

The second day of the trial began with testimony from Carl Farley, who discovered the murder weapon in a snow bank behind White Deer Run at 901 Vine Ave.

Farley was working as a maintenance man for White Deer Run at the time and observed a piece of wood protruding from the snow as he was putting trash in the business's dumpster.

On closer examination, he saw the wood working on the handle and assumed it was a gun. Farley notified the college police force and soon city police were on the scene to uncover the weapon.

City police Agent Raymond Kontz testified that he arrived on the scene after Farley's report and helped to uncover the gun, which he described as a sawed-off shotgun about a foot in length. The gun was uncovered just two days after police had searched the area for the weapon after Shabazz told state police that they disposed of the gun near a church.

The gun was processed by city police Lt. Arnold Duck. Duck told the court that, while he was examining the weapon, he discovered a red stripe around a safety button, indicating that the gun was in the firing position. Inside the barrel, he found a 12 gauge Winchester shell hull that showed the gun had been fired.

Duck said he did not perform a finger print test because the texture of the weapon would likely not yield results, but he did swab parts of the gun for a DNA test. Results of the test have not been shared in court.

Isaiah Fulton, a fellow gang member whom Gardner and Shabazz were visiting in early 2013, testified that Gardner did bring a gun with him on the trip, and kept it in a backpack. The gun, nicknamed "Bishop," was in the bag with Gardner at the time of the shooting, Fulton said.

After the shooting, Shabazz and Gardner left the scene in different directions, but eventually met up with Fulton and another friend before returning to the 807 W. Third St. apartment where Gardner and Fulton had been staying with Fulton's former girlfriend, Shontay Payton.

    Winterizing your home

    - September 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Question:

What should I be doing now to prepare my house for winter?

A: Historically, the first frost in Colorado comes by mid-September. And the first hard freeze typically arrives in early October. Now is the right time to take some simple steps to make your home comfortable and energy conserving during the cold months ahead.

    1. INSULATE Heating your home can be expensive. By improving the home's insulation and making sure windows and doors are sealed properly you can save money and energy. Since heat rises, start in your attic to see if more insulation would help keep the home warmer at lower costs. You may want to consider replacing older windows with energy efficient versions available today.

All windows and doors need to be sealed around the edges to prevent cold air from entering and warmer air from escaping. You can check if air is leaking around doors and windows by loosely holding a tissue up to the edges and checking for air movement,

    2. UPGRADE THERMOSTATS Consider installing a set-back thermostat for each heating zone which makes it easy to have your home's heating system come on automatically and only when you need it.

    3. TEST YOUR FURNACE Turn your furnace or boiler on now and run it for a while to make sure that it's working properly. Boiler systems, which circulate heated water, are subject to leaks. Having your heating system professionally examined and tested annually is a good idea both for efficiency and safety.

    4. CHANGE AIR FILTERS If your heating system uses an air filter, it should be changed at the start of the season and checked monthly during the cold months. A dirty filter restricts air flow and is potentially a fire hazard in the worst case. Having the heating ducts inspected and cleaned every few years will help improve air flow and may also help improve the air quality.

    5. INSTALL CO DETECTORS Today having Carbon Monoxide detectors in your home, near the furnace and near bedrooms, is essential. These inexpensive devices, which look like a smoke detector, will warn you if dangerous and often odorless fumes are escaping from your furnace.

    6. WRAP WATER HEATERS AND PIPES Consider adding insulated wrap around the hot water heater in your home and enjoy additional energy savings. If you have exposed water pipes close to outside walls you may want to wrap them to protect them from freezing. Most of these insulation products are available at your local home improvement store.

Jade Mountain, St Lucia. There is nothing understated about this Caribbean retreat, from the maze of walkways to the high-impact views of the volcanic Piton peaks.

Qualia. The Windward Pavilions have private plunge pools and glittering sea views.

    Likuliku, Fiji.

Leadwood Lodge, Sabi Sands, South Africa. With just four suites, each with an outdoor shower, a fireplace and the ultimate luxury, a private pool, its a fabulous place to hole up.

The Pavilions, Phuket. Each of the private villas covers around 300 square metres and comes with its own infinity pool; some even face west over the ocean, perfect for watching the sun setting over the water.

Perivolas, Santorini. If all caves were this comfortable, we might never have moved out of the Stone Age.

Perivolas, Santorini. If all caves were this comfortable, we might never have moved out of the Stone Age.

Here are some things that make for a relaxing holiday: private villas, lazy late breakfasts, afternoons on the beach with a soundtrack of lapping waves and rustling palm fronds.

Here are some things that don't: children shrieking gleefully as they chase each other, tantrums over toast, and chants of "But he started it!"

Adults-only resort are growing in popularity, and it's not just DINKS (Double Income No Kids) who are checking in. Plenty of parents occasionally choose to go on holiday without their kids, expressly to enjoy the kind of grown-up activities that children interfere with reading books, for instance. The last thing they want is to be distracted by someone else's children while they're racing through the last pages of the latest Lee Child.
