    Recovery month events planned

    - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

September is National Recovery Month, and to celebrate, everyone is invited to the 13th Annual Prevention and Recovery rally and barbecue on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Allan Witt Park in Fairfield.

In addition, the Solano Recovery Project is planning a luminary memorial on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Solano county Event Center Lawn on Texas Street across from the Government Center.

The Luminary project is aimed at citizens of Solano County to come remember loved ones lost to the disease of addiction/alcoholism and to share an evening of hope, healing, and strength. The unifying message is "Come for support, Leave with hope, and Get involved." The speakers will cover loss, their path to healing, and show they have used tragic loss to transform their own life and make a positive difference in the community. Each speaker will end with a call to action, to get involved and to make a difference.

Visitors to Saturday's rally and barbecue are encouraged to bring the whole family for an afternoon of free food, music, prizes and guest speakers.

Sponsored locally by the Solano County Recovery and Prevention Alliance, the rally and barbecue are aimed to help further educate communities about the pathways to recovery and to support people in recovery.

People throughout Solano County are in various stages of recovery from mental and/or substance use disorders, noted organizers. They are contributing members to local business, connecting with their families, and giving back to the community.

"Too many people are still unaware that treatment works, and that these conditions can be treated," Andrew Williamson, substance abuse administrator with Solano County Health and Social Services, said in a press release. "Just as we can treat other chronic, recurring health disorders, we need to work together to make recovery the expectation."

Under the Affordable Care Act, the Medi-Cal healthcare expansion has extended insurance to nearly everyone, regardless of income, so that outpatient treatment is available to everyone who wants to participate. Treatment works, health officials said, and individuals who embrace recovery achieve improved mental and physical health, as well as stronger relationships and a sense of self-worth.

In 2012, more than 1.7 million people nationwide aged 12 and older received treatment for an illicit drug and alcohol use from a specialty facility. Thanks to the treatment they received, these individuals have achieved healthy lifestyles, both physically and emotionally, and contribute in positive ways to their communities, officials noted.

"Substance use disorders do not discriminate," Williamson said. "They affect people of all ethnicities, ages, genders, geographic regions, and socioeconomic levels."

GreenPal app lets people hire lawn services

    - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bryan Clayton knows not everyone likes to mow their lawn. But they also don't know who to hire and don't have the time to gather bids.

That's where his service comes in.

GreenPal connects homeowners with lawn care companies using a smartphone or desktop computer. Clayton cites Uber, a car service app, as its inspiration.

GreenPal works like this. A homeowner posts his lawn job and companies vetted by GreenPal bid for the work. The customer chooses one and reserves with a credit card. Once the job is done, the company uploads a photo of the finished product and the customer approves the payment.

In theory, it's possible to bid a job in the morning and have the grass cut before you get home from work. You can also schedule visits days and weeks in advance.

GreenPal started recently in Nashville and, on Monday, went live in the core areas of Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Brandon, Pinellas Park and Plant City. Homeowners trying it in the next few weeks may get only one or two bids, but should draw more once GreenPal registers more companies and the concept catches on, Clayton said.

Clayton, 34, started a lawn mowing business in high school and got the idea for GreenPal while running Peach Tree Inc., a large commercial mowing service he sold in 2013. He chose to expand in the Tampa Bay area because of its year-round lawn care needs and high density of homes.

"I saw that it was hard for people to connect with lawn services,'' he said. "With this, you get access to the guy around the corner who wants to mow your yard.''

GreenPal was designed to eliminate the time-consuming task of calling around to companies and meeting with landscapers to get quotes. With the app, the companies can look up the yard on Google Earth and give a price quickly.

GreenPal is free to customers and vendors, and makes its money by taking 5 percent of transaction costs. To ensure safety, the company runs criminal background checks on the grass cutters and calls references. Once the app gets more traction, homeowners will be able to see examples of past lawns mowed and ratings from other GreenPal users before choosing a company.

No reduction in fines for land clearing

    - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Illegal land clearing will still attract a $1.1 million fine but farmers will be given more scope to clear land after coalition agreed to elements of Shooter and Fisher Party Bill. Picture Facebook Source: Facebook

THE state government has refused to support law changes that reduce fines for illegal land clearing following the shooting death of Environment officer Glen Turner.

After a cabinet meeting this morning, the coalition party room unanimously resolved to support elements of a Shooters and Fishers Party bill to amend the Native Vegetation Act, that would give farmers more power to clear trees on their properties.

But the reduction of fines will not be supported by the government, with no-one in the coalition party room speaking against this decision.

The bill was pulled from the Upper House schedule last week by roads minister Duncan Gay, after concerns were expressed within the government about the sensitivity of the potential fine decrease after Mr Turners death.

Mr Turner was allegedly murdered by farmer Ian Turnbull, after he visited the property due to reports of illegal land clearing.

The changes supported by the government include changes to the control of broadscale clearing of single paddock trees- allowing one single-paddock tree to be cleared each year, and farmers will be allowed to clear native vegetation where it poses a risk to people or property.

The government will not support the reduction of penalties for illegal clearing from $1.1 million to $1100.

Home Exterior Systems Now Providing HardiePlank 30 Year Warranty

    - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) September 16, 2014

Houston-based home improvement company Home Exterior Systems recently announced the arrival of a 30-day warranty for its HardiePlank products. The details of the warranty program reveal a commitment from Home Exterior Systems to provide excellent service to its clients, particularly in the Houston metropolitan area.

Home Exterior Systems is a retailer of James HardiePlank lap siding, which are long narrow boards for covering the outer walls of a building. Lap siding protect the facades of buildings from the elements of weather, such as rain and sun. As a result, buildings look newer than the ones that do not use lap siding. Also, the boards are made with sealer and primer, thus making them impervious to cracking, fading, rotting or peeling.

James Hardie Industries Ltd., which is based in Melbourne, Australia, has built a reputation as the manufacturer of one of the best lap siding brands in the world. HardiePlank is thicker than the average lap siding, and it has more texture. These attributes make it a better protector for building facades than most brands currently in the market. Consisting of Beaded Cedarmill, Colonial Roughsawn, Rustic Cedar, and Select Cedarmill, HardiePlank offers a healthy range of finishing and color choices.

The 30-year warranty that covers Hardie products is non-prorated, which means that Home Exterior Systems will replace or repair the item free of charge if it is defective. In some cases, the company will pay the transportation costs associated with the repaired item or the replacement. While most non-prorated warranties are short, this one is exceptionally longenough to cover the typical mortgage period.

About Home Exterior Systems: Since 2003, Home Exterior Systems, LLC has provided exterior home improvement services to residents in the Houston metropolitan area. Its products and services, besides the aforementioned HardiePlank lap siding, include window and door replacements, roofing, powerwashing, and deck and patio construction. Founded by home improvement veteran Jay Sanchez, the company is the recipient of several honors, which include the 2010 ServiceMagic Home Pro of the Year Award, the 2010 and 2011 Excellence Awards from the Better Business Bureau, 2013 Angie's List Super Service Award, and the Best of Houzz 2014 badge for Service. Home Exterior Systems is headquartered at 19731 Lake Stone Court, Tomball, Texas 77377. To request a quote or services, the company can be reached by dialing 281-542-9577.

Mixing Exterior Home Textures for Added Curb Appeal

    - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LENEXA, KS (PRWEB) September 16, 2014

Ho-hum, boring home exteriors are out. According to national color expert Kate Smith, a consultant for DaVinci Roofscapes, "mixing up" the textures on the outside of a house adds curb appeal and personality to a home.

For homeowners wishing to mix textures on the home exterior, Smith recommends following the FRESH approach. "Start by looking at the fixed features of the home --- such as the foundation material, chimney structure or walkways --- to determine the basic common color or color cast that will link all your materials together," says Smith, president of Sensational Color. "Next, look for commonalities in the regional colors for your home and the environment near your home."

One family that successfully mixed textures during a home renovation is the Butlers of Brock, Nebraska.

After almost a quarter of a century with wood shingles overhead, the Butlers decided to "shake up" their roof. Rather than simply replace their cedar shakes, the homeowners opted for a combination of metal and polymer shake tiles on their roof to complement the brick, cedar, and copper textures on the home's exterior.

The Butlers chose a DaVinci Roofscapes Multi-Width Shake roof in a Mountain blend of three brown tones of color for the top of their roof with an aging artisan metal secondary roof underneath and capping off dormer windows. The home's siding features both real cedar and brick accents, and the gutters and garage doors are made of copper.

"With each rain and wind storm we were losing pieces of our original wood shingles from the roof," says homeowner Kim Butler. "We started searching online for long-lasting roofs and discovered the polymer shake tiles from DaVinci. At the same time we remembered the appeal of steel roofs we'd seen in Montana. Somehow we knew we wanted to combine the two products.

"We really like how metals patina with age to give a rustic look. With a steel roof and copper gutters, we believe the slow progression of the patinas will bring long-term beauty and durability to our home. Add in the DaVinci composite shakes and we have a winning combination."

Tips for Creating a Textured Exterior

According to Smith, the Butlers are right on the mark with the trend of mixing textures. "They did this perfectly," says Smith. "The homeowners were able to bring together so many different textures and colors seamlessly because they took into consideration the whole house and the surroundings while they stayed within one color family. From the dark window frames to the roughhewn cedar shutters to the smooth metal roofing, the style of their home beautifully lends itself to the use of multiple textures."
