Residents of a row of attached brick houses in Halifax known as the Twelve Apostles could be out of their homes for up to two weeks after engineers Monday deemed a razed building behind the houses a hazard.
Fire destroyed the commercial building at 5426 Portland Place on Sunday, leaving a blackened hulk between the Staples store on Gottingen Street and the row houses on Brunswick Street.
The engineer hired by the insurance company deemed the remaining wall to be a hazard so we had to evacuate the residents for their safety, said Lloyd Currie, divisional commander for the Halifax regional fire service.
This is the second time residents have been forced out of their homes due to the fire.
I woke up Sunday morning and all I heard was water on the roof, said Faron Felix, a student at NSCAD University.
At first I thought it was rain, but then I realized it was too heavy and then I felt the heat from the blaze behind us and saw the big wall of orange flames.
Felix and his roommate had been happy to get back into their building but were told late Monday to leave again.
Jill MacLellan has lived in one of the units for over three years. She stood talking with a few residents as firefighters, police officers and Red Cross workers gathered at the site. Her cat, Henry, sprawled in a carrier, unaffected by the goings on.
This is a beautiful old building; theyre really unique with lots of character, she said.
MacLellan would be staying at her brothers place in Fall River.

Classic VHS tape logos inspire artists at 5BORO NYC to design skateboard decks worthy of our retro memories.
VHS tape logos make for great skate decks. 5BORO NYC
Long before DVDs, Blu-ray and digital downloads, we had to record and watch our favorite movies and TV programs on VHS tapes.
New York skate shop 5BORO NYC pays tribute to our media past with a series of skateboard decks inspired by VHS tape logos and box label designs from companies such as Sony, Memorex, TDK and Fujifilm.
This makes sense considering most of us first watched amateur and professionally made skateboard-trick videos starring famous skaters like the Z-Boys and a much younger Tony Hawk on old VHS tapes.
There are eight different designs in all from artists Willy Akers, Rafael Gomes, Joe Tookmanian, Jimmy McDonald, Guillaume Dulout, Danny Falla, Dan Pensyl and Akira Ishizawa. The decks range in price from $49 to $50 (plus shipping and handling).

Opening a section of blackjack tables at one of Ohios four casinos is a long, labor-intensive process, as dealers spread out and carefully inspect all 312 cards in the six-deck stacks they often use.
It can take 30 minutes to get the first table going and up to 90 minutes to get all six tables going, said Tosha Tousant, Horseshoe Clevelands director of table games.
This will change this year, as the Ohio Casino Control Commission has approved the use of preshuffled stacks of multiple decks of cards at the states casinos for use at blackjack and mini baccarat tables.
Time is money at casinos, and saving minutes means more games played and more revenue for the casinos.
And also better customer service, said Himbert Sinopoli, vice president and general manager of Hollywood Casino Columbus.
Preshuffled cards are an industry standard, he said, adding Hollywood Casino uses about 20,000 decks a month for all its card games.
The total is 16,000 decks a month at Horseshoe Cleveland, Tousant said.
Despite their use worldwide, the executive director of the states casino commission was skeptical when the Ohio casino executives requested permission to use preshuffled decks of cards.
Then our staff made two inspection trips (to the United States Playing Card Co. in Erlanger, Ky.), said Matthew Schuler.

A celebration honoring Hillsview Community Churchs first 100 years will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. The public is welcome to attend the celebration that will include music, memories, food and refreshments.
Hillsview Community Church was one of the first churches in the Boring/Damascus community. Originally started in 1914 by Swedish immigrants, many current Hillsview members are descendents of these founders.
Though services were originally held in Swedish, said current Pastor Michael Conrad, Hillsview has always spoken the language of Christs love to our community.
Hillsviews commitment to the youth of Damascus has been an important part of its legacy through special events such as Vacation Bible schools, community carnivals, Bairds Puppet Shows and chalk drawings. In 1966, a preschool and a kindergarten was opened to the public, one of the first in the area, and currently a Montessori Preschool operates on the church premises.
The church also partners with Snow Cap, an organization that provides food, clothing, advocacy and other services to the poor, and Angel Tree, a prison ministry that reaches out to the children of inmates and their families during the Christmas season.
In continuation of its tradition worldwide, Hillsview Community Church is currently supporting missionary work in Ecuador, China and other parts of Asia. It also has partnered with other churches in Damascus over the years, holding joint services on special occasions and co-sponsoring events such as The Sports Camp, a program that was held at Hillsview this summer and attracted more than 150 children.
The original church building was just west of the current church, built in the late 1970s, when much of the construction was donated by the volunteer labor of church members. Some of the stained-glass windows and the church bell from the original church were installed at the present church.
