Fortress Security, a security and monitoring provider in Texas, reports that customers are seeing more door-to-door solicitors engaging in home security systems scams, particular strategies aimed at those who already have service in place. Jerrod Smith, founder and owner of Fortress Security, urges consumers to do sufficient research and be aware of common deceptive practices.
Weve heard of agents claiming a particular company asked us to come by and just simply upgrade your system since its old free of charge, said Smith. Our customers have been told, Fortress Security has gone out of business and we are here to transfer your service over to us.
When accepting a supposed upgrade without carefully reading the new contract, a homeowner may not immediately realize they are agreeing to concurrent service, or even that they are signing on with a completely new company. While many consumers are aware of the importance of diligent research, clever sales agents add incentives to speed the process along by claiming they offer savings only available by signing the agreement on the spot.
Never sign a contract with a door-to-door salesperson without contacting your existing alarm company first, said Smith. The famous high-pressure door-to-door close of this deal is only good if you sign up with me RIGHT NOW is usually bogus.
While these tactics are used by unethical service providers, not every company that sells door-to-door is manipulative. However, Smith encourages strong skepticism and careful reading of contracts to avoid falling victim to fraudulent strategies.
If a resident reads the contract, and they like the deal and the salesperson, they may not have a problem, Smith said. But a rushed decision is not ideal and some of our customers say they prefer not to do business with agents who knock on their door during dinner or family time in the evenings.

CEDAR RAPIDS The $90 million redevelopment of Westdale Mall has shifted into high gear with a combination of exterior and interior activity.
Frew Development and city officials broke ground Friday for the 10-year project, which will include retail, commercial, office, entertainment, residential, hotel, green space and connecting trails.
The Cedar Rapids City Council agreed to provide $5 million in upfront money for Westdale and will recoup the money from tax-incentive revenue that comes with the added value of the redevelopment.
John Frew, president of Frew Development Group in Denver, Colo., on Friday said seven pad sites along the Edgewood Road SW side of the property have been sold. He confirmed that Chick-fil-A and U.S. Bank will occupy two of the sites, but he declined to identify the remaining buyers.
Chick-fil-A, an original tenant of Westdales in 1979, has been constructing stand-alone buildings with drive-up windows, similar to its Lindale Mall venue, as part of its current business model.
U.S. Bank is relocating to Westdale because the building housing its existing office at 2350 Edgewood Rd. SW was acquired by F&M Bank of Manchester, which has offices in northeast and downtown Cedar Rapids.
Airtight, watertight
Leading up to Fridays groundbreaking were a series of actions most behind the scenes required to prepare for demolition of the main portion of the mall.
Construction of three semi-permanent walls separating the main portion of the mall from JCPenney, Younkers and the former Von Maur building began weeks ago and is progressing rapidly, according to Lisa Rowe, vice president-retail for Frew Development Group and Westdales general manager.
