    Demolition paused for old museum

    - September 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LITTLE VALLEY One hundred years ago this month, more than 200 Civil War veterans gathered in Little Valley to dedicate the Cattaraugus County Memorial and Historical Building.

Last year, the Cattaraugus County Legislature voted to demolish the former Cattaraugus County Museum on Court Street, across from the County Center, when the adjoining Board of Elections building was vacated after the office was moved to a new location.

After the firestorm of criticism from preservationists, including descendants of the 154th Regiment of Civil War soldiers from Cattaraugus County, the Public Works Committee decided to temporarily suspend demolition efforts while working with those who sought to save the historic building.

The museum moved 10 years ago to the Stone House in Machias. The former museum has stood vacant since then.

Mark Dunkleman, a descendant of a 154th Regiment soldier and a supporter of keeping the building, emailed supporters this week asking them to contact Public Works Committee members to work with preservationists to save the historic building.

'New' pottery found in Royal Doulton's old factory roof

EXPERTS dealing with the demolition of the former Royal Doulton factory found a secret mug hidden in the roof.

The plain cream cup, inscribed with once-proud initials of the Royal Doulton Company and without a backstamp, was uncovered during the demolition of one of the factory's main buildings, just off Nile Street in Burslem.

The mysterious mug has yet to be accurately dated.

But the item may be handed to a museum for academics to study.

Robert Freeman is the foreman engineer for CMR Demolition, which is handling the operation at the historic site.

He said he was shocked to find the unusual mug.

He added: "A lot of the time whenever you're doing something in these old buildings you would find things the builders have left in there after they have finished.

"But I have never seen a mug like this left behind.

"It wasn't hidden in one of the normal places too. It's really strange.

Lawson Aquatic Centre back in the swim of things

    - September 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

REGINA After months under a health advisory warning, a July closure and $1.8 million in renovations, the Lawson Aquatic Centre is open for business.

And yes the hot tub is open too.

Elite-level swimmers had long complained of nausea, vomiting, hospitalizations, developing asthma and persistent coughs after swimming at the pool, and the Regina Optimist Dolphin Swim Club spent months begging the city to do something.

Four months after the Regina QuAppelle Health Region issued a health advisory warning swimmers about the Lawsons poor air quality in November last year city council approved measures to improve air circulation and water quality.

Work on the facility began on July 21.

The citys acting director of facility management, Jill Hargrove, is confident the upgrades will make for a better swimming experience, saying the pool is now as good as any modern aquatic facility.

Hargrove said comprehensive testing at the facility over the past several days demonstrates the systems are working as designed.

(Swimmers) will notice an improved environment, absolutely, she said.

Most of the work has happened behind the scenes, with a new air ducting system the only visible change.

Renovations were expected to be finished by Sept. 1, but the original target date didnt allow enough time to finish construction and test the components.

Crosswalks can still pose a danger to those on foot

    - September 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

How many of us who cross busy streets daily have been buzzed at one time or another in the crosswalk by a car whose driver apparently just couldnt wait for the walker to clear the road?

Too many, it turns out. And most of the time, all you can do is shake it off, clench your teeth and bite your lip.

Unfortunately, pedestrians in our automobile-dominated culture are too often ignored in this manner. Sometimes the results are tragic. St. Louis is one of the U.S. cities whose rate of pedestrian injuries or deaths has grabbed the attention of the Federal Highway Administration. The agency has included it among its so-called focus cities that require extra attention to shore up safety.

I think everyone is just starting to become aware of this pedestrian-safety issue, said Meredith Klekotka, TravelGreen manager at Trailnet Inc. in St. Louis.

Americans are walking and bicycling more. So while motor vehicle crash fatalities are on the decline, the number of pedestrian and bicyclist injuries and deaths have been on the rise since 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Part of the problem can be traced to our culture and part of it can be linked to the construction of St. Louis roads, which were designed for a larger city, she said. Pedestrians who cross downtown streets, for instance, can spend 80 to 90 feet in a street. Meantime, pedestrians may have to go well out of their way to cross at a downtown corner. As a result, we see a lot of dangerous mid-block crossings.

Missouris pedestrian laws, meanwhile, are antiquated. They have been on the books since the mid-1960s, are not as tough as laws in other states and are probably out of date, Klekotka said.

Making our streets safer for pedestrians will take a multipronged approach, according to safety advocates such as Klekotka. Laws will have to give police more authority to enforce crosswalk safety. Streets can be re-engineered to reduce a pedestrians exposure. (We have seen curb extensions that reduce the actual driving surface that needs to be crossed on foot.) And there is plenty of room for public education.

On the national stage, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx has declared pedestrian and bicyclist safety a top department priority.

Tougher laws dont necessarily mean pedestrians would be safe. A survey released last week by the Active Transportation Alliance showed that drivers stopped less than 20 percent of the time when pedestrians tried to cross a street within a marked crosswalk. Compliance was lower on unmarked crossings, the group said.
