Tree Removal Will Enhance Popular Sportsground
Dunedin (Friday, 12 September 2014) The removal of 12 trees on Logan Park Drive will greatly improve the facilities at Dunedins premier sports hub.
Dunedin City Council Parks Manager Lisa Wheeler says the sportsfield directly in front of the 12 Ontario poplars is undersized in length by 10m because of a lack of space.
This is the citys highest use sporting facility and once these trees are removed the field can then be repositioned and resized.
Removal of the trees will also address shading problems for afternoon fixtures at the highly regarded University Oval. This longstanding issue has been raised by Otago Cricket through Annual Plan submissions.
There was considerable discussion and consultation before the decision was made in September 2005 to remove the trees.
The Logan Park development planning process from 2004/05, and the public consultation which was part of this process, identified a number of issues and concerns associated with the age and stability of the poplar trees at Logan Park.
This was the main reason for the working party commissioning the 2007 Logan Park Tree Management Plan, which was fully consulted on with stakeholders and approved by the working party as an operational implementation plan, Ms Wheeler says.
The 12 poplar trees on Logan Park Drive north of the University Oval gates being removed were identified in the Plan. The Plan recommended in the short term (one to three years) removing these trees and the gum tree in front of the tennis centre. The poplars were then scheduled to be removed in 2009/10, subject to funding. Ms Wheeler says removal of the trees has been scheduled for some years, but was dependent on funding being available.
The gum tree was removed last year and projects have been reprioritised to make funding available now for the poplars to come down. Removing the trees now will ensure shading issues are resolved before Cricket World Cup matches are played at the Oval in February.

As the chop looms, plans to remove 12 established poplars in Logan Park Dr have fired up Dunedin residents, some of whom say the decision appears to be out of the blue and even ''horrifying''.
But the Dunedin City Council says the removal of the trees, which will come down next week, is part of a 2007 plan to redevelop Logan Park.
This included the eventual removal, and partial replacement, of the entire avenue of poplars.
The original plan was to remove the 12 Ontario poplars about five years ago, but the move was delayed for various reasons.
The council says the trees are to be removed mainly because they shade the University Oval cricket ground and because the space is needed for sports fields.
Many people have contacted the ODT since Tuesday's story about felling the trees.
It is understood council staff have also received calls.
Concerns aired range from a loss of ambience, to whether the options had been fully canvassed, to giving in to sporting codes' demands and confusion about process.
Stephen MacKnight, of Dunedin, said the trees significantly added to the character of Logan Park, and the University Oval in particular, and their removal would greatly affect that.

WALLINGFORD Phase two of the towns tree planting program is moving forward, but history is repeating itself as Wallingford Center Inc. is again asking town officials to delay the removal of trees downtown. WCI officials would prefer the town to wait until after Celebrate Wallingford is held next month.
Public Works Director Henry McCully, who is also the towns tree warden, made the decision earlier this week to remove 38 pear and oak trees in downtown Wallingford. The trees were planted in the mid-1990s along Center Street from Route 5 to North Main Street.
McCully and Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. did not return a call for comment Thursday.
With no time specified from McCully, its unclear when the town will begin to remove Center Street trees. The first phase lasted several months, however.
Wallingford Center Inc. officials said theyve asked the tree warden to delay the tree removal until after Celebrate Wallingford. The festival will be held Oct. 4 and 5.
We would rather have all of the trees not be removed at all. Were holding that position, WCI President Steve Lazarus said. With that said, were asking for a delay in removing the trees until after Celebrate Wallingford that certainly makes sense.
Dickinson said previously the trees have to be replaced every 15 years because they grow too large, blocking signs and store fronts. The tree roots also cause sidewalks to become damaged.
The Center Street trees will be replaced with pear and cherry trees, and town officials said the new species will improve the aesthetics of the downtown area.

For more than a hundred years, North Dakota State College of Sciences Old Main has overlooked the campus.
It was built in 1891 and after a hundred years of use, the building needed renovations.
Executive Director of Facilities Management Dallas Fossum said work will ensure that Old Main stays standing for another 100 years.
Starting in February 2014, the renovation project at Old Main has been an effort to bring the best of two worlds together by fully revitalizing the building with new technology and its original character.
The full renovation of the building is expected to be finished by the summer of 2015and be ready for use during that fall semester. So far, Fossum said everything is running on schedule.
Were nearing completion on a lot of the structural steel work inside that was required both to accommodate the new design and to shore up the building so it can last for decades to come, said Fossum. Theyre already framing a lot of interior walls and are nearly done with sheet rock work.
Additionally, Fossum explained that a lot of the plumbing and electrical work has been accomplished. Currently, the crews are focused on the basement level of the building, as Fossum said there is renovation work to be completed on the drain tile to make sure moisture stays out of the building.
The windows will then follow, Fossum said. The plan is to start installing the windows here in late September, working from the fourth floor down. They want to get it done this fall so they can do the finish work over the winter.
As it nears completion, Fossum said landscaping work will begin to get completed and by mid-summer of 2015 the fence is expected to come down.
Upon its completion, the building will be utilized by students and faculty alike, holding both offices and classrooms. Also included will be a tutoring center and an academic services center.
