The unusual river dolphins, some of them known for their poor eyesight and side-swimming behavior are all descendants of ocean-dwelling species. Until now, however, there has been no consensus about their relationships, and few specimens to help illuminate them. In the new issue of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, researchers describe a new fossil dolphin species from the Miocene (dating to more than 16 mya) of the Pisco Basin, a desert on the coast of Peru. It belongs to a rare extinct family of marine dolphins, the squalodelphinids, which are related to the endangered Ganges and Indus river dolphins living today. The new specimens increase the known diversity of squalodelphinids and help shed light on their relationships.

River dolphins are a bizarre group of cetaceans (marine mammals) in that they reside in freshwater rivers and estuaries, though their ancestors were marine. As a result of life in muddy river water, some are functionally blind and have very small dorsal fins. Despite similar appearances, the South Asian river dolphins of the Ganges and Indus rivers (Platanista spp.) are only distantly related to other river dolphins of the Amazon and Yangtze rivers.

The new species, named Huaridelphis raimondii, after the Huari culture (500-1000 AD) the smallest species of its family yet known, has been described from several wellpreserved fossils. The quality of the fossils places these specimens as some of the bestpreserved members of this rare family, says Olivier Lambert, of the Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique, lead author of the study.

Though the squalodelphinids have been known for some time, these small to medium size dolphins are rare in the fossil record, and were until now only found in a few localities (Argentina, France, Italy, and east coast of U.S.A.). The Pisco Basin, is currently one of the richest areas in the world for the study of the evolution of whales and other marine mammals; whales with fossilized baleen, a giant raptorial sperm whale, and a walrus-like dolphin have been discovered there. According to Dr. Lambert, For the past 30 years, many fossil cetacean species were described based on material from the Pisco Basin, dated from the Eocene to the Pliocene. And we are still far from the end of the study for this hot spot of marine mammal paleontology.

Recent fieldwork by the Peruvian paleontologist Mario Urbina and his team in new localities from the early Miocene (23-16 million years ago) lead to the discovery of several well-preserved squalodelphinid skulls, now curated at the Museo de Historia Natural (Lima). Their analysis by Lambert and colleagues lead to the description of the new species.

Considering the richness of the fossil localities recently discovered, other new extinct dolphins from the same geological age will certainly soon be found and studied, added Giovanni Bianucci, of the Universit degli Studi di Pisa and an author on the study.

Another craft brewery tasting room opens in Torrance as The Dudes Brewing unveils a 13-tap bar with a weekend-long celebration.

The Dudes Brewing opened in 2013 and pint cans of the pungent Double Trunk Imperial IPA and nutty Grandmas Pecan brown ale rolled off the automated canning line and into major retailers across the Southland. But until now, the brewerys fans have had no place to belly-up to sample all of The Dudes brews in one spot. The self-professed "slackers" are "finally getting their act together" with the grand opening of the on-site tasting room Friday at 3 p.m.

In addition to the widespread canned offerings (Kolschtal Eddy is the third canned beer to be released by the brewery) and the draft-only brews, such as the Juicebox series of seasonal beers and the Southbay Session pale ale, the tasting room will feature one-off and experimental brews made on the brewerys pilot brewhouse. The grand opening will also serve as the premiere of a new IPA from the brewers known for their flavorful (and often high-test) beers.

The South Bay has grown into a hotbed of craft brewing in Los Angeles, and the opening of The Dudes tasting room is another stop on an already lengthy South Bay craft brew crawl that includes Smog City Brewery, Monkish Brewing, King Harbor Brewery and nearby Timeless Pints all providing craft ales to thirsty fans across L.A.

The opening weekend celebration runs through 10 p.m. Friday and from noon until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and the brewery will offer cans and growlers to take home.

OCEAN CITY -

Patty Davis hasn't forgotten the road construction project that, starting last Fall, cut off street access to her Bay Avenue Restaurant.

"The hardest thing was communication. Just not knowing when the work crews were coming, when the roads were going to be closed, the access people would have on Bay Avenue," said Davis.

But just when they though their troubles were over, the owners of Bongo Caf and Grill learned about more road work scheduled for this fall.

"The town engineer was very honest with us, said Davis. He said they're gonna be ripping up this whole corner. It's just we don't know when."

It's that uncertainty that has Patty closing up the restaurant for good, much to the dismay of her regular customers.

"One of the waitresses told us and I burst into tears, said Marcella Canfarotta, who has been coming to the restaurant since it opened. Just, I was so sad."

"It's just a shame because you got a place that really captured the imagination of a lot of people," said Ron Giaconia, another loyal customer.

"We decided that we just didn't want to go through what we went through last winter, not knowing when we could open, what the access to the restaurant was going to be, said Davis.

Davis says she's planning to spend time with family in Pennsylvania while they plan their next move, but there's no hard feeling between her and the city.

Years ago, Keith Ward seldom saw a restaurant inspector at the Goulds diner his family has now operated for about 50 years.

There were times you never saw an inspector for three or four years, Ward said Thursday.

All thats changed now and in recent years the inspections are more frequent, more diligent and keep up with changing regulations and standards.

When those (Service NL) guys come in, if you dont comply, they will shut you down. Thats life, Ward said of the ultimate potential punishment for non-compliant restaurants.

Prior to that, you were never really compelled to do it.

ForWard, the due diligence of the inspectors is in keeping with changing times that focus more on health, just like eliminating smoking in public venues.

Everything has changed. I think what (the inspectors) are doing is OK. Theres nothing wrong with it, it makes you a better business owner, he said.

Thursday was the first time Ward of Keiths Diner and Take Out was asked about his restaurant inspection by anyone in the public, in this case a Telegram reporter.

But he said when the inspections went public, it kept restaurant operators on their toes and gave the public some peace of mind.
