10 popular roofing styles — Which is the best for you?

    - September 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Provided by Networx.com

Besides performing the essential function of protecting human beings from sun, rain, hail, and snow, roofs come in various shapes that add architectural interest to the buildings they cover. Factors to consider when choosing a roof are local climate, cost to build and maintain, and the style of your home as a whole. If you are actively planning to build a house -- or just daydreaming about your future residence -- it's fascinating to learn about different roofing styles and decide which one you like best.

    1. Flat

A flat roof is the simplest kind to build. It takes the least amount of roofing material but needs to be carefully waterproofed, because it doesn't drain well. If you'd like to relax on a glamorous terrace or plant an eco-friendly urban garden atop your roof, a flat design could be for you.

    2. Shed (skillion)

A shed roof consists of a single plane, which is slanted, high on one side, low on the other. This is an improvement on the flat roof due to better drainage. Although it will leave you with odd-shaped rooms underneath, adventurous souls may plan this deliberately as a unique architectural feature.

    3. Gable (pitched)

A gable roof has two sides that slope down from a central ridge. Easy to build and suitable for whatever climate you may live in, it can be vented and doesn't collect precipitation or debris like fallen leaves. The gable roof allows space for an attic, great for insulation purposes; you'll find it less complicated to insulate the floor of an unheated attic space (which can be used for storage of non-cold sensitive items) than the roof itself.

    4. Hipped

A hipped roof has two long sides and two shorter ones slanting down from a ridge in the middle. The eaves can overhang your property, shading overly sunny windows and shielding the entrance, as well as protecting siding from rain. With its high-quality wind resistance, the hipped roof is ideal for warm climates where there a frequent rainstorms. It's an excellent Miami roofing choice, for example.

    Roofing scam suspect arrested

    - September 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Emmanuel Broadway, suspected of involvement in a "predatory" fraud ring, has been arrested after four months on the lam.

Broadway was with four others accused of being part of a roofing and asphalt scam that victimized elderly residents of Montrose, Delta, Ouray and Mesa counties, and locations on the Front Range.

Boulder County authorities and the Colorado Attorney General's Office launched "Operation Steamroller" to halt the alleged activities of Broadway, Rickey Gene Fite, Rickey Dean Fite, Rodney Jackson and Michael Sullivan.

The Fites and Jackson were arrested in May; Broadway and Sullivan could not be located at the time.

Broadway is now in custody at the Montrose County Jail, where records list a warrant arrest made by the sheriff's office and a $100,000 bond.

The circumstances of his arrest were not immediately available.

    Sullivan remains at large.

Nikon D750 full-frame SLR breaks cover

    - September 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Nikon D750 has the same sensor resolution as the D610, but a host of improvements and additions.

The new Nikon D750 has an awful lot in common with the existing Nikon D610, but when you look closer there are new features, enhancements and additions, with some from the D810 that add up to a very interesting proposition.

The big story (or non-story) is that the sensor resolution is the same. Both cameras have 24.3 megapixel sensors, though Nikon says the D750's is 'newly designed'.

Even the continuous shooting speeds are almost the same the D610 can shoot at 6 frames per second, while the D750 can go a fraction faster at 6.5 frames per second. This will be a surprise to those who expected Nikon to produce a high-speed version of the D610 with the same sensor but a faster frame rate.

There is still good news for action fans, though. The D750 uses Nikon's professional level 51-point AF system, together with the new Group Area AF mode first seen on the flagship D4s model. A new Expeed processor boosts the image processing power too, so that the D750 offers an ISO range of 100-12,800 (expandable up to 51,200), which is a whole EV better than the D610.

The Nikon D750 has a tilting rear LCD, too, and this is a first for a Nikon full-frame D-SLR. It tilts both up and down, so you can use it for low-level and overhead shooting.

This will appeal to those who need to shoot movies and the D750 adds 60p and 50p to its list of frame rates, which means it can shoot slow-motion video in full 1920 x 1080 HD. In fact the movie features are a big step up from the D610's, with manual control over lens aperture while filming and 'clean' HDMI output for simultaneously recording uncompressed video to an external storage device.

Nikon continues to work quietly behind the scenes on battery life, and the D750 can take up to 1,230 shots on a single charge, or 55 minutes of movie footage.

Best of all, the D750 comes with Wi-Fi connectivity built in, so you can control the camera from your smart device and copy images across, without needing the little plug-in WU-1a and WU-1b needed by other Nikon D-SLRs.

The D750 will be available from September 23rd for 1,800 (approx US$2,919/AU$3,212). It probably won't tempt you if you had your eye on a Nikon D810 or Nikon D4s, but if you were thinking of getting the D610, the D750 gives you a whole lot more versatility for a (relatively) modest increase in price.

DENVER - Technically, it's still summer for a few more days but it's snowing already in Colorado! The Denver area saw a dusting Wednesday and could get a bit more snow as a cold front moves through. Fortunately for residents there, this is just temporary and they'll enjoying 70 degree days again soon.

Chris Brown Rebounds on Social 50 Chart

    - September 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chris Brown re-enters the Social 50 chart at No. 22 after a one-week hiatus from the tally, thanks to a flurry of promotion tied to the upcoming release of his sixth studio album, X.

Chris Brown's Full Billboard Cover Story

A countdown-style promotion of the album on Brown's Instagram is responsible for more than 2.7 million likes on the platform for the week, subsequently leading to the acquisition of 51,000 new fans (Brown gains more than 200,000 overall across Facebook and Twitter). Starting on Sept. 1, each day a 15-second snippet of a track from the album, including "Loyal" and "New Flame," garnered anywhere between 60,000 to 75,000 likes each.

The Social 50 incorporates the following metrics: weekly additions of fans across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram; reactions and conversations across Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook; and views of an artist's Wikipedia page, according to music analytics provider Next Big Sound.

Further up the chart, One Direction ascends 24-7 after debuting the full-length trailer for their second film, "Where We Are," named after the band's current tour. The Sept. 3 announcement also brings a 1,326 percent increase in reactions on Instagram.

The huge jump in Instagram traction was fueled by how the band didn't load a single image in the previous charting week, so, when the group went back to its usual loading of images (in the newest tracking frame), there was obviously a huge gain in reaction. One Direction is expected to rise going into next week after announcing their newest album, FOUR.

Over on the realtime Billboard + Twitter charts, Austin Mahone gets his third entry as "Till I Find You" comes in at No. 25 on the weekly Top Tracks tally. The title charts after Mahone posted a tweet promoting that the track will be featured on the game Just Dance 2015 (due in late October).

Lastly, Los Angeles-based electronic hip-hop/jazz fusion specialist Flying Lotus gets his first entry after generating a sizable amount of buzz thanks to Kendrick Lamar jumping on his newly released track, "Never Catch Me," which comes in at No. 19. "Never Catch Me" is a track from Flying Lotus' forthcoming album You're Dead that's scheduled to drop Oct. 6.

Hotel Test Drive: Renaissance Denver Downtown

    - September 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Renaissance has been a solidly upscale brand that for as long as I can remember has flown beneath the radar in the hotel industry, never getting the name recognition of peers like Westin or InterContinental. Its been a somewhat overlooked part of the huge Marriott family for nearly two decades, but with a recent reshuffling of Marriotts luxury portfolio, including Ritz-Carlton, Autograph Collection and several more brands, Renaissance is undergoing a true renaissance, with both reinvestment and a sudden onslaught of high profile new openings worldwide, including nine this year, expanding the brand to 37 countries worldwide. Just last week (September 1, 2014) saw the doors open on the Beijing Renaissance Wangfujing, following on the heels of recent additions such as the Renaissance Paris Hippodrome de St. Cloud Hotel, designed by renowned architect Jean-Philippe Nuel (and the brands third Parisian property), the Renaissance Santiago in Chile, and another French property, the new Renaissance Aix-en-Provence. The additions all have an emphasis on design, and most have showcase lobbies.

(Read more about Marriotts eight distinct luxury brands, including new launches, and what segment each one is positioned for, here at Forbes.com).

The Renaissance Denver Downtown City Center is the most notable domestic opening, less than three months ago, and as a guest of Marriott I got to take it for test drive The somewhat unwieldy name is the result of there already being a Renaissance in Denver, but this new one is ideally positioned for both leisure and business visitors, located in the heart of Denvers downtown, which in turn has seen the largest recent downtown urban revival of any US city. It is within walking distance of many key city attractions, form Coors Field and its Major League games to the pedestrianized 16th Street Mall and Larimer Square (see my Great Urban Weekend Escapes Denver story for more visitor detail on the Mile High Citys red hot downtown).

A historic landmark and formerly opulent bank headquarters, the new Renaissance Denver Downtown hotel has a grand lobby.

The new Renaissance occupies the very old former Colorado National Bank building, designed in 1915 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the citys most iconic structures, the building features neo-classical, Greek revival architecture with white exterior columns and walls, built of the same Colorado-mined marble used for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Towering bronze doors guard a three-story atrium, with marble flooring, ornate bronze accents and a traditional circular vault door still on display. The bank had, and now the hotel has, the kind of architectural opulence hard to replicate from scratch, including 16 important lobby murals from acclaimed Colorado muralist Allen Tupper True, circa 1925.

The bank theme extends throughout but without being too kitschy. On the way to the elevators there is a wall of historic antique rendering of building details, and money related art all around the hotel. Coincidentally, this is the second high profile hotel opening of 2014 in a dramatic and historic former bank: I recently reviewed the brand new Park Hyatt Vienna in this Hotel Test Drive column.

The hotel has its own inset parking plaza in the center of the block, which is a rare and really nice touch for a city hotel if you are arriving by rental car. Staff was uniformly friendly, adding to the overall warmth of the grand but welcoming lobby experience. In the center of the lobby is a classy bar that makes a good place to start the evening or meet people, with both bar and easy chair seating. The hotel even has its own bank-themed craft beer, CountingHouse, custom brewed for its bar and restaurant.

The very comfortable bar in Range restaurant in the new Renaissance Denver Downtown hotel.

Guest rooms (221 of them) are sleek and quite modern, with modern art, angular furniture, brightly patterned rugs and lots of smooth surfaces. They are above average size and very comfortable, with well designed sitting areas separate from the bed, and I appreciated the coffee maker and free Wifi in rooms and all common areas, but for a brand new hotel I found the glaring lack of accessible electric outlets unacceptable, especially in light of the substantial real estate given to the desk area. I understand that at older hotel I might have to unplug a lamp or crawl around for an outlet, but at just about every new property of this ilk I have visited, there have been multiple and obvious outlets built into the work area. There is room service but it is not 24-hour. On the plus side, the fitness room was surprisingly well appointed, with all new and top end equipment, plus an uncommon Kenisis wall system.

One element hat is supposed to differentiate the Renaissance brand is Navigator, which what Marriott calls a souped-up, micro-local concierge. The hotels are themed around a sense of being a local, and the Navigator program is essentially a concierge service focused on offering insider knowledge and less obvious experiences, including activities, culture, dining and shopping. To this end, the rooms are full of these little tip-sheet cards suggesting interesting things to see and do, which are a great touch until your realize they are a jumble of Navigator tips worldwide. For instance, I found the shopping suggestion of an enclave of offbeat antique stores fascinating until I realized they were in Thailand. Limiting the Denver Navigator suggestions to Denver might make a lot more sense.
