Cops want air test at 'noxious' stations

Cops want air test at 'noxious' stations

The police union is demanding independent air quality testing at Karratha and South Hedland Police complexes amid fresh health concerns linked to alleged ongoing mould infestations.

Union president George Tilbury claimed several staff at the Karratha station fell ill with headaches yesterday after cleaning work at the complex, where there have been complaints of mould and bacteria since 2011.

The union board planned to organise independent air quality testing for both Pilbara Police complexes.

This includes the air-conditioning duct work, to ascertain if mould, bacteria and other allergens are present in sufficient quantities to cause harm or ill health, Mr Tilbury said.

Cleaners yesterday saturated the Karratha complex with a noxious substance, leaving staff and visitors complaining about the over-powering damp smell, Mr Tilbury claimed.

But WA Police denied the allegations, saying cleaners had put tea tree oil gel packs, which were considered safe, in the air conditioners to counter mould.

Spokesman Neil Stanbury said the gel packs had been used at the Pilbara stations for the past 18 months.

Cleaners removed the packs as a precaution after being told one woman had gone home sick, he said.

Mr Stanbury said Police took the health concerns seriously and de-humidifiers worth $2 million had been installed at the two Pilbara police complexes.

    WA's 'sick' police stations

The WA Police Union says it will demand WorkSafe inspectors examine two Pilbara police stations hit by a plague of mould and bacteria if WA Police refuses to allow an independent air testing audit.

Union president George Tilbury said officers at Karratha and South Hedland police stations had been grappling with "sick building syndrome" for years and the force had done little to address the situation to ensure the health and safety of officers.

At least one Pilbara-based officer has been diagnosed with legionnaires' disease, but several others have reported serious respiratory illnesses believed to be linked to the mould outbreaks, which have occurred since 2011.

Mr Tilbury said the union would commission independent air quality testing so a thorough examination of both Pilbara police stations could be conducted.

"This includes the air-conditioning duct work, to ascertain if mould, bacteria and other allergens are present in sufficient quantities to cause harm or ill health," he said.

"The [union] board also recommended that if WA Police prevent the entry of such an independent body, then I am authorised to exercise any lawful avenue to ensure member safety, including requesting that a WorkSafe inspector attend the premises."

On Wednesday, cleaners saturated the Karratha complex with an over-powering "noxious substance", leaving staff complaining of headaches and feeling unwell, the union said. One woman suffered vomiting and two people took sick leave on Thursday.

Skateboards With VHS Tape-Inspired Decks Let You Rewind a Few Decades

    - September 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The thought that today's kids will certainly have no concept of what VHS cassettes were is a little sad for those of us who grew up taping TV, rewinding movies, and messing with that mysterious tracking dial. But VHS cassette tapes will be far from forgotten as long as a few skateboarders embrace these retro-styled decks from 5BORONYC.

To anyone born after DVDs were introduced, the artwork on these decks will probably be a little obscure. But to their parents, there will be no doubt that the artists who created these designs were trying to emulate the cardboard sleeves that used to hold blank VHS tapes. And they certainly succeeded. If you're old enough, it's hard to look at these $50 skateboards without brands like Memorex, Fuji, and TDK popping into your head. [5BORONYC via designboom]

Govt clears stake sale in CIL, ONGC, NHPC; may get Rs 43k cr

    - September 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    New Delhi, Sep 10, 2014, (PTI) :

Clearing the decks for mega disinvestment drive, the government today approved diluting its equity stake in bluechip companies Coal India, ONGC and NHPC, which is likely to fetch Rs 43,000 crore to exchequer.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the disinvestment of 10 per cent paid-up equity capital in Coal India (CIL), an official statement said.

At present, the government shareholding in the coal mining company is 89.65 per cent."The decision to disinvest would help the government realise an optimum price for the offer for sale of 10 per cent of the government's shareholding in the company," it said.

The CCEA also cleared selling government's 5 per cent paid-up capital in ONGC and "this would further broad base the shareholding of the company and would enhance disinvestment receipts". Government's stake in the company stands at 68.94 per cent.

Besides these two, 11.36 per cent disinvestment in hydro power generator NHPC was also approved. Government holds 85.96 per cent stake in company.

At current market prices, the sale of shares in state- owned CIL, ONGC and NHPC could garner over Rs 23,000 crore, Rs 18,000 crore and Rs 2,800 crore respectively, helping the government meet its disinvestment target of Rs 43,425 crore for this fiscal.

Meanwhile, sources said the stake sale in the three companies would be done through the Offer For Sale (OFS) process, popularly known auction route.

The government has already selected merchant bankers for managing ONGC and NHPC disinvestment and is in the process for doing so for CIL.

ONGC shares closed at Rs 445.30, down 0.79 per cent at BSE. CIL shares last traded at Rs 373.85 (down 1.80 per cent) and of NHPC at Rs 22.40 (down 0.44 per cent).
