Wooden outdoor structures can be made more durable: Words to Grow By

    - September 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you're planning on building a wooden fence or outside structure, be sure to consider the deteriorating forces that high temperatures and moisture have on wood in Louisiana.

Especially in our warm and humid state, it is important to choose an appropriate wood when building a fence or outside structure. After selecting the wood, a maintenance program consisting of staining or periodic retreatment will give the most satisfactory results.

The principal causes for wood failure in Louisiana are termites and decay rot caused by the state's moist, warm climate. When conditions are favorable for their growth, microscopic filaments of decay fungi grow through wood, breaking it down and using it for food. Fungi and termites both need warmth, moisture and oxygen to grow. Keeping as much wood off the ground as possible will reduce retained wood moisture.

Termites and decay around a structure are a problem where excessive water is either absorbed or trapped in cracks and joints. Because they are in the ground, posts must be pre-treated to resist insects and diseases.

Water that enters the surface checks of horizontal rails and boards keeps internal wood wet enough to decay unless the wood is treated to resist such deteriorating forces. Retained water is even more destructive in shady locations.

Water is absorbed through the ends of wood faster than through the sides. The problem is more accelerated at the ends of rails, braces and boards. A water-repellent preservative can help reduce the problem.

Woods most commonly used for decks and fences in Louisiana are western cedar, redwood, cypress and pressure-treated southern pine.

Chemical treatments and water repellents increase the useful longevity of wood used outdoors. Chemical treatment can be done by dipping, brushing or by pressure. Pressure treatments that force preservative chemicals into weed are better because they provide in-depth protection against both decay and termites for a long time. Generally, Southern pine is the only type of pressure-treated wood available from local retail outlets.

Posts should be pressure-treated unless they are decay-resistant heartwood. Above ground parts of decay-resistant wood may last satisfactorily from 10 to 15 years.

Pressure-treated pine will last much longer. Quality of treatment is not always indicated by the color of the wood. That's because wood fades to a more neutral color after exposure to sun and rain. Penetrating water-repellent stains also may be applied to fence posts to alter the initial color and to reduce warping, checking and cracking.

Bands tune up for Powderhorn PorchFest

    - September 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The sounds of a Cajun band blasted from the front porch as a crowd of hundreds packed the yards and street of a residential Minneapolis neighborhood. That scene took place at a unique music festival held last September.

"People were holding hands and swinging around their neighbors or people who live down the block, who they may never have met, just laughing hysterically," remembered festival co-organizer Niky Duxbury.

On Saturday, 24 bands from Minneapolis and one from St. Paul will again haul banjos, fiddles and amps to the Powderhorn Park neighborhood of Minneapolis and set up on front porches for a festival appropriately called Powderhorn PorchFest.

The music festival takes place on the 3200 and 3300 blocks of 17th Avenue in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood of Minneapolis. It's the third year the event has been held, and it keeps growing. This year, bands will play on five porches spread across the two city blocks, both of which will be closed to cars.

Duxbury said the idea came about two years ago when she and co-organizer Aaron Blum were talking about how there were few venues where people could see neighborhood bands for free.

"Why aren't all of our very talented musician friends and singer songwriters playing out more and getting more exposure and getting listened to?" Blum said. "A lot of them were just playing their music online, which is a great forum for exposure, but we wanted to bring it to the community, we wanted to bring it to the street."

They wanted an unpretentious festival that wasn't sequestered in a bar or big commercial venue. South Minneapolis' huge stock of front porches fit the bill.

"There's something traditional and old about gathering on a porch in somebody's yard, and playing music," Duxbury said.

"It's an invitation into somebody's home and space," Blum added.

Bands this year will be playing styles including Cajun, folk, hip-hop, old-timey and cumbia, which organizers said was meant to represent the diversity of the neighborhood.

Lawsuit filed by boyfriend of woman killed by falling stone from church

    - September 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The boyfriend of a woman who was killed last week when a piece from a stone gargoyle fell from a historic South Loop church and hit her in the head has sued the church and the Presbytery of Chicago.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in Cook County Circuit Court by Lance Johnson, who was walking with the victim, Sarah Bean, when she was fatally struck by the falling stone.

The lawsuit claims that the Second Presbyterian Church of Chicago and the Presbytery of Chicago, which oversees Presbyterian churches in Chicago, were negligent in their ownership of the church building by allowing the exterior wall to exist in a dangerous and unrepaired condition.

The lawsuit states that Bean is survived by two children, both minors. Johnson is the father of one of the children, according to the lawsuit.

The incident happened about noon Thursday. According to Chicagos buildings department, a piece of decorative metal came loose from the outside wall of the church at 1936 S. Michigan Ave., a century-old building that had been hit with a number of building violations.

The metal knocked off a chunk of stone from a gargoyle jutting from the churchs southeast corner, city officials said at the time, hitting Bean on the head and killing her. The lawsuit draws the same scenario as that given by the city on the day of the incident.

A day after the incident, repairs were being made to the building.

The church was built in 1874 and failed a string of inspections from 2007 to 2011 for violations that included failing to remove obstruction from building exits and failing to maintain an interior stairway system in safe condition, city records show.

The building passed inspections in 2012 and 2013, records show.

Johnsons lawyers could not immediately be reached for comment.
