    Poisoning blast may prevent extinctions

    - September 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Scientist are hopeful the country's largest pest control operation - based around 1080 aerial poisoning - will prevent any endangered bird extinctions this spring.

In the $21-million "battle for our birds" programme, hundreds of tonnes of the contentious poison will be dropped over up to 700,000 hectares between now and Christmas to counter a predicted "biblical" boom in rodent numbers.

The biggest of the 27 operations will be over 270,000ha in Kahurangi National Park, near Nelson. Most 1080 drops will be in the South Island, and cover just a quarter of the 2.8 million hectares of beech forest expected to "mast".

A mast season happens every three or four years, where huge numbers of beech seed trigger an explosion in mouse, rat and stoat numbers. When the seed runs out they turn to native birds and bats.

Such a situation is blamed for the mohua, or yellowhead, being wiped out in the Marlborough Sounds in 2000.

"Hopefully we won't lose anything because we have picked all those sites that have got species that might go extinct if we don't do anything," Department of Conservation scientist Graeme Elliott told a briefing on Tuesday.

He was accompanied by Landcare Research's John Innes and Canterbury University's Dave Kelly.

Such large scale rodent control was new for New Zealand, Dr Elliott said. 1080 had previously been used primarily against possums for Tb control but was found to be very effective against rats, mice and stoats.

They are confident it will work.

Work done in Central Otago's Dart Valley following a mast seeding showed pest numbers could be hammered with 1080 where brodifacoum didn't work.

It's just bananas: Pest control experts burned my bin and vacuum after I discovered tropical spider cocoon

    - September 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A MUM who bought bananas got more than she bargained for a bunch of tropical spider eggs, belonging to a deadly Brazilian Wandering spider.

And pest control experts had a solution to the problem strip the house of everything they had been in contact with and burn it.

Abby Woodgate, 30, initially thought the bananas had mould on them. But when she poked it with a toothpick, a cocoon opened, revealing dozens of tropical eggs.

She immediately threw the fruit in the bin, but a few eggs dropped on her kitchen floor, which she vacuumed.

She called TescosHighwoodsstore, which had delivered the shopping to her home off Straight Road, Colchester, and it said it would collect them.

She then received a call to say pest control experts would be round instead.

See Monday's Gazette for the full story.

BT supervisors open bids for road materials, discuss line painting

    - September 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

At a meeting Monday evening, Bradford Township supervisors opened bids for road materials and discussed the prospect of conducting line painting before winter.

Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. won with the low bids for 60 tons of cold patch at $100 per ton, gabian stone at $35 per ton, 9mm asphalt at $66.50 per ton and 19 mm base at $55.80.

IA Construction Corp. won the bids for antiskid at $7.50 per ton, 2RC at $10.15 per ton, and #3 and #2B gravel at $15.75 per ton each.

Supervisors passed a motion to accept the lowest bids subject to review.

Township Secretary/Treasurer Nora Stewart updated the supervisors as to the progress of securing quotes for painting lines in the township. Stewart said she was having difficulty reaching the necessary people, and the only bid received was more than $18,000.

Supervisor Gayle Bauer thought the amount was too much, pointing out that most of the lines would be gone after winter due to salt and ice.

The other supervisors agreed, asking Police Chief Robb Shipman if he would choose a few roads that were in the most critical need of line-painting prior to the snow.

Shipman decided on West Corydon and High streets because they receive the most traffic.

We may as well wait until spring for the rest or else were just throwing money in the air, Supervisor Chairman Steve Mascho commented.

The supervisors passed a motion to change the streets for the project, seek a new price and table the motion.

Students perform at Music and Vocal showcase over the summer

A Music and Vocal Student Showcase was held at Dosey Doe Music Caf over the summer by the Theresa Yow Vocal Studio. The evening showcase included public and homeschool students from all over Montgomery County.

Rachael Sutton, a singer/songwriter who uses her captivating musical gifts all for God's glory; Julianna Banks, Morgan Wilson, and Emily Cole, all singer/songwriters that are still in high school but still manage to find time to write and perform almost every weekend, often times together; Emily Hammer, a singer that enjoys singing all genre's of music, including musical theater; Jordan Burmeister, who's passion is singing and hopes to record her first single soon.

In light of the recent suicide of actor, comedian, and filmmaker Robin Williams, Lone Star College-Montgomerys Human Services Student Organization and the Psych Club feel theres an urge for more awareness about depression and mood disorders. In conjunction with the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance, they will host a free informational lecture on understanding depressive and bipolar related disorders on from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 16, at the LSC-Montgomery campus (building G, room 102).

Glen Killian, professor and program director of human services at LSC-Montgomery, feels it is a timely topic with there still being so much talk and interest in the media surrounding Williams death.

I think mental illness and mental health issues are very common, but also very misunderstood, Killian said. Theres a lot of negative beliefs and stigma toward people with mental health problems, despite the fact that theyre so common.

Its likely that a large number of people suffering from depression do so in silence because it carries so much social negativity. In order to decrease the number of suicides related to mental health, education of mental health disorders is imperative.

Megan Gust, program manager with the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, will speak on the signs and symptoms of depression. Gust will be on hand to answer any questions about mental health struggles and their connection to suicide.

Support groups are just as vital to those suffering from depression and bipolar disorders, as seeking the right treatment. DBSA is a national organization formed to provide free and confidential support groups for individuals living with, or have family and friends affected by, depression and bipolar disorders, and works to educate the public about depression and bipolar disorders.
