Marcus Lim: TV shows can serve as inspiration as well as entertainment.
The boom in TV home reno shows is proving to be a boon for home improvement industries, with data indicating a spike in demand for tradies after Channel Seven's House Rules went to air in April this year.
Rather than just sitting on their sofas watching the contestants battle it out for the grand prize, figures collected by local services marketplace Oneflare shows a surge in home industry related job requests across the board.
Some of the quotes posted on ServiceSeeking are definitely ideas from House Rules.
The upswing includes a 48 per cent rise in job postings for interior designers, a 35 per cent rise in requests for kitchen renovations, a 30 per cent increase in bathroom renovation job postings, and a 28 per cent increase in requests for architects.
Speaking about the data, Marcus Lim, co-founder and CEO of Oneflare says: "Usually there's a relatively steady amount of jobs in each service category, like people searching for cleaners, plumbers and electricians. But in April of this year, we were baffled as to why there was a sudden jump in people posting home improvement jobs specifically.

"When we looked into it further, we realised there was a link between when the House Rules show went to air and our job request data. It suggests that TV shows can serve as inspiration as well as entertainment."
Oneflare's renovation and design planning tool, Scrapbooks, which lets home builders compare and hire the best value worker, and manage home improvement jobs from their home device or PC also experienced a spike in traffic.
Home reno dreams are even outstripping desire for a tropical holiday according to an online survey by interiors destination thehome.com.au. When asked what would you do with a spare $15 000, 72 per cent of respondents nominated home improvements over a holiday.

Iraqi parliament is scheduled to be convened on Monday night to vote on Prime Minister-designate Haider al-Abadi's proposed cabinet, the parliament speaker Selim al-Jabouri's office said on Sunday.
State television also reported the tentative plan to hold the session. The approval of the cabinet could still be delayed amid last-minute wrangling and brinkmanship over posts.
The make-up of the cabinet has still not been revealed, but Abadi is expected to include representatives of all the country's religious and ethnic components in a bid to save Iraq from collapse.
If a government is not agreed, this will mean a return to the start of the contentious process, leaving Iraq rudderless at a time of crisis.
The prime minister designate was picked on August 11 as a replacement for outgoing Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who dropped his bid for a third term after Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish political blocs rejected him.
The prime minister has until September 10 to submit his government for approval, or Iraq's president must select another candidate for premier.
Undone by Islamic State group
Maliki, who won the most votes of any candidate in April's national election, was undone by the Islamic State group's seizure of large sections of northern Iraq and the almost total collapse of the Iraqi military almost three months ago.
About one-third of the country is under Islamic State domination, while the self-rule Kurdistan region continues to examine whether or not to declare independence.

In the late 1990s, Rick Wuest was a 30-something member of his family window-manufacturing company forgettably named Mid-Lantic Corp. when he decided the business his father built needed to change course.
Revenues were flat. Profits were reliably in the black. The Wuests did fine, living comfortably and poking along selling the vinyl windows they manufactured on Kent Island to building contractors.
It was a lifestyle business, said Wuest, referring to the window company his father, Fred, had started on West Street in Annapolis in 1980. But there was little reinvestment in the family firm.
Wuests ability to change that, building what became Thompson Creek Window Company, is all the more impressive given the difficulties many family-owned companies big and small face in navigating a path for succeeding generations.
Wuest, now 47, is a liberal arts graduate of Penn State who worked nearly every job in the company. He ached to take his family business to the next level.
I knew there was an opportunity we hadnt really yet fully realized, he said recently. I didnt know what that was.
He couldnt help but notice that the window business, long a sleepy niche in the home improvement and building ecosystem, was exploding with the entrance of vinyl replacement windows. Replacement windows are often the more affordable alternative to ripping out an entire window frame.
Some very well capitalized businesses came into the marketplace, said Wuest, referring to big names like Andersen and Pella, which were aggressively pursuing the vinyl window market. Competition was growing. The channels for windows in the marketplace were growing. Competition was coming and the prices were falling.
Wuest knew that if the company were to survive, it needed to grow. And to grow, Mid-Lantic would have to begin reinvesting profits back into the company and expand sales.
We werent very well capitalized, Wuest said.
