Possible data breach at Home Depot highlights retailers vulnerability

    - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Los Angeles Times

The possible data breach at Home Depot Inc. that came to light this past week has raised anew the question of whether retailers can prevent or at least do more to stop hackers from swiping customer information.

The home improvement chain said it was working with law enforcement, banking partners and security agencies to investigate unusual activity but as of Friday had not confirmed whether a breach has occurred.

On Tuesday, security journalist Brian Krebs reported on his website that Home Depot may be the source of a massive trove of debit and credit card information that went on sale in the cybercrime underworld.

Home Depot spokeswoman Paula Drake said Wednesday that our forensics and security teams have been working around the clock since we first became aware of a potential breach Tuesday morning. ... There is no higher priority for us at this time.

If payment data were stolen, Home Depot would join a pack of other companies including Michaels, Neiman Marcus, P.F. Changs and Target Corp. that have been targeted by hackers who made off with debit and credit card information from customers.

Security experts say large companies can never completely shield themselves against cybercriminals, but many can improve their odds by focusing more attention on closing loopholes in their system.

The reality we live in today is any company is bleachable, said Aleksandr Yampolskiy, chief executive of SecurityScorecard Inc., which rates businesses on the level of their security. If someone is determined enough, they can hack into any company. And for the biggest companies, its nearly impossible to secure all of the weakest links.

As a safeguard, some U.S. retailers have said they will adopt cards with embedded chips that many other countries use in place of cards with magnetic strips that store personal information, which can be more easily counterfeited.

In the past, the high cost of this EMV system named for its developers: Europay, MasterCard and Visa has prevented wide adoption by U.S. companies. Instead, credit companies created the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council in 2006 to push for better protections against consumer data theft.

Work to start Monday on Sherman stormwater project

    - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Starting next week, Fort Morgan residents should expect traffic disruptions along South Sherman Street, as construction work begins on a storm drainage project, according to a city news release.

The stormwater project and its related delays and closures are expected to continue through at least Oct. 31.

Work will start Monday, Sept. 8, on the project, which will construct a storm drainage system along five blocks of South Sherman. The project is part of the city's storm drainage master plan and resulted from a drainage study and design completed for the south quadrant of the city in 2011.

The project is scheduled to commence at the southern end of the project area and move northward in phases, the news release stated.

The stretch of Sherman Street from Morgan County Road Q.7 ("Lover's Lane") to Southridge Road will be the first area closed to through traffic. That section of the road is scheduled to be closed for approximately two weeks, and the work will then shift north to the next section.

Only local traffic will be permitted in the project area, and detours will be through surrounding residential areas, according to the news release. Motorists are advised to plan ahead to avoid the area of South Sherman and use alternate routes. Traffic control and detour signage will be in place throughout the project.

Meanwhile, the expected closure of Ensign Street to complete resurfacing of that road has been postponed until late September, according to the news release.

Because of the volume of concrete under the roadway on Ensign that must be removed before repaving, that phase of the project is expected to take four to five weeks much longer than a simple paving project.

With the Fall Harvest Car Show and the Pedal the Plains bicycling event scheduled for Sept. 19-21, the Ensign project was moved back to avoid having construction ongoing so close to downtown during those events.

The plan now calls for the Ensign work to resume on the Monday after the car show, Sept. 22.

Nato 'ring of steel' fences sent to Calais to stop immigrants

    - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Britain will send the fences used at the Nato summit to Calais in an effort to stop illegal immigrants getting into Britain from the French port.

The immigration minister James Brokenshire said the move is part of a bid to send a message that the UK is "no soft touch" for migrants.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, the minister said the new fencing would replace the "inadequate" fencing currently in place, and added that a hope would be to create secure parking for legal travellers to wait without the threat of hassle from any disruption.

Britain will send the 9ft 'ring of steel' fences used at the Nato summit in Wales to Calais in an effort to stop illegal immigrants getting into Britain.

It would replace the "inadequate" fencing currently in place and hopefully create secure parking for legal travellers to wait without the threat of hassle from any disruption.

Immigration minister James Brokenshire said the move is part of a bid to send a message that the UK is "no soft touch" for migrants.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph he warned would-be illegal immigrants Mr they "should be under no illusion about what awaits them if they arrive here illegally".

He said it was up to the French to maintain security and order on their own land but Britain would do what it could to help.

France should stop blaming Britain and "get its act together" and deal with growing numbers of asylum seekers in Calais, according to a former home secretary.

Lord Howard of Lympne said he had "some sympathy" with the mayor of Calais, Natacha Bouchart, but he said she was "directing her frustration and her anger at the wrong target" by threatening to blockade the port and demanding that London "take responsibility" for them.

UK Offers To Send 'Ring Of Steel' To Calais

    - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Joe Tidy, Sky News Reporter

The Home Office is offering to give French border officials the fence that was used to protect world leaders at the Nato summit in an attempt to deal with the immigrant crisis in Calais.

Known as the "ring of steel", the 11ft tall, 11-mile-long fence was erected around Celtic Manor and other Nato venues in South Wales.

Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, immigration minister James Brokenshire acknowledges the growing issue of security in the port of Calais where migrants are attempting to gain access to Britain in vast numbers.

The minister writes: "Obviously it's up to the French to maintain security and order on their own soil, but we want to do what we can to help. We offered the port of Calais 3m three months ago to help improve security we now offer our French partners the fences that were used this week to keep the Nato summit safe in Newport.

"These could replace and enlarge the inadequate fencing in Calais which is too easy for illegal immigrants to scale."

It is estimated that 1,500 migrants from countries such as Afghanistan, Eritrea and Ethiopia are living in makeshift camps near the port and regularly climbing over fences in order to get to lorries and ferries.

On Wednesday, dozens of men stunned French officials by storming directly into the port in broad daylight.

Most of the young men claim to be seeking asylum in the UK and risk their lives to get onto ships bound for Dover.

Sudanese migrant Ibrahim Abubakar said: "I have no home, I have no job, I have no place to sleep. This is my problem here. I want to stay here, but they give me a long time, I wait four months here. After that, maybe I find a home, I find a job. It's very difficult here. But I think after I go to England maybe I find job, I find a home, I find something to eat."

    Apprenticeships growing in non-traditional fields

    - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By George C. Ford, The Gazette

CEDAR RAPIDS When Mark Wallinga began working for International Automotive Components (IAC) in 2007, he was employed as a finish operator at the Iowa City plant. In 2008, he began a registered apprenticeship program for mold setting or injection molding setup.

When the recession hit in late 2008, early 2009, I was laid off, Wallinga said. I was recalled to work in late 2009 and spent another year and a half as an apprentice mold setter. I was able to bid for a position as an apprentice electrician in 2010 and was successful.

I started as an apprentice electrician in October 2010. I completed my apprenticeship in April 2013 and became a journeyman electrician.

Wallinga, who completed four years of classroom and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training during his electrician apprenticeship, is second-shift maintenance supervisor at IAC. He said the need to pursue a higher level of training became apparent during his layoff from IAC.

I was actively looking for another job and there was a lot of competition, Wallinga recalled. When I got back into the plant, I began looking at my future and what I could do to prevent that from ever happening again.

When that electrician apprentice bid came up, I jumped all over it because I knew it was a skill I could take with me for the rest of my life.

    Changing perceptions

When most people hear the term apprenticeship, they typically think of learning a building trade such as carpentry or masonry.

But that perception is starting to change as other sectors such as advanced manufacturing, culinary arts, health care and information technology are embracing apprenticeships to expand the pool of qualified candidates.
