OTTAWA--Canada shed jobs in August after the previous month's gain of nearly 42,000, led by the biggest decline on record in private-sector positions, Statistics Canada said Friday.
Employment in Canada declined by a net 11,000 positions in August, whereas market expectations were for a gain of 10,000 jobs, according to economists at Royal Bank of Canada. The unemployment rate in August was 7%, unchanged from the previous month and matching consensus, as Canadians dropped out of the labor force and stopped looking for work.
According to the data, Canada shed 111,800 private-sector jobs in August, the largest one-month decline on record for this category. This was offset by a 14,000 gain in public-sector payrolls, and a surge of 86,900 among the ranks of the self-employed.

Polk and Definitive Technology, sister companies under the Sound United umbrella, a have both announced multi-room audio systems that use DTS DTSs Play-Fi technology. Similar in function to Apple Apples AirPlay, Play-Fi and these speakers will let you stream music throughout your house with minimal setup.
Products in the two families include wireless speakers, soundbars, connected amps, and more.
DTS
Play-Fi, announced last year, works over your current WiFi network. It allows you to stream music from your PC and the web (via Pandora Pandora, Spotify, etc), to multiple speakers.
Sonos works similarly, but is a closed ecosystem (you can only use Sonos products. Apples AirPlay also does the same thing, but not everyone loves Apple. Also, you have to spend a fair amount to get a decent sounding AirPlay speaker.
Polk
Polks new line is called the Omni Wireless Music System. At launch there are five products.
Omni S2 ($179): A small wireless speaker designed for bedside or a small space like a bathroom. It has two 2-inch drivers and two passive radiators. A USB connection will charge your phone.

David Burke Kitchen is to occupy the top floor of the building at Hopkins and Galena that houses high-end retail outlets, while a related business, a lounge called Huckleberry Hall, is to open in the basement space.
Burke, who owns several restaurants, had intended to open his namesake eatery in January. But Rocky Aspen, his local business that will operate David Burke Kitchen, was sued by his original contractor, Centaur Construction, which alleged it was owed $554,000 in unpaid bills.
Rocky Aspen countersued, contending the construction firm fell behind its completion schedule; billed it for certain items that are the responsibility of the buildings owner, 204 South Galena Street LLC; and charged for electrical work that had not been completed, and for furniture, fixtures and other items that had not yet been delivered. The lawsuit remains ongoing.
Centaur Constructions lawsuit also targeted the building owner, 204 South Galena Street LLC, in a mechanics lien matter. That portion of the lawsuit has been settled, and the claim against 204 South Galena Street, which is controlled by Aspen developer Mark Hunt, was dismissed.
Rocky Aspen put up $75,000 to satisfy and discharge the lien, allowing subcontractors under Centaur to be paid and dismissed, according to a court filing.
There were a fair share of delays and setbacks, a lot of construction issues, said Sally Spaulding of Wagstaff Worldwide, Burkes public relations firm.
Burke has enlisted a new contractor, and work to finish the restaurant and nightclub spaces began about two weeks ago, she said. Summit Construction now has the building permit to complete the work, according to a notice posted on the building.
Once finished, David Burke Kitchen will be Aspens largest restaurant, counting the patio space, Spaulding said. It will take up the roughly 5,200 square feet that comprises the top floor, Burke said last year.
Matt ONeill, hired from Ajax Tavern, is still on tap to head the kitchen. The restaurant plans to offer dry-aged meats such as venison, elk, wild boar and pork, along with roasted trout and aged cheeses, Burke said.
Spaulding said there will also be a Burke-patented feature involving a signature curing room that will have Himalayan sea salt along the walls.

Yaoying Ma says that biology, by nature, has a yin and a yang -- a push and a pull.
Addiction, particularly relapse, she finds, is no exception.
Ma is a research associate in the lab of Yan Dong, assistant professor of neuroscience in the University of Pittsburgh's Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. She is the lead author of a paper published online today in the journal Neuron that posits that it may be possible to ramp up an intrinsic anti-addiction response as a means to fight cocaine relapse and keep the wolves of relapse at bay.
This paper is the first to establish the existence of a brain circuitry that resists a relapse of cocaine use through a naturally occurring neural remodeling with "silent synapses."
The work is a follow-up on a recent study conducted by Dong and his colleagues, which was published in Nature Neuroscience last November. The team used rat models to examine the effects of cocaine self-administration and withdrawal on nerve cells in the nucleus accumbens, a small region in the brain that is commonly associated with reward, emotion, motivation, and addiction. Specifically, they investigated the roles of synapses -- the structures at the ends of nerve cells that relay signals.
The team reported in its Nature Neuroscience study that when a rat uses cocaine, some immature synapses are generated, which are called "silent synapses" because they are semifunctional and send few signals under normal physiological conditions. After that rat stops using cocaine, these "silent synapses" go through a maturation phase and acquire their full function to send signals. Once they can send signals, the synapses will send craving signals for cocaine if the rat is exposed to cues previously associated with the drug.
The current Neuron paper shows that there's another side of "silent synapse" remodeling. Silent synapses that are generated in a specific cortical projection to the nucleus accumbens by cocaine exposure become "unsilenced" after cocaine withdrawal, resulting in a profound remodeling of this cortical projection. Additional experiments show that silent synapse-based remodeling of this cortical projection decreases cocaine craving. Importantly, this anti-relapse circuitry remodeling is induced by cocaine exposure itself, suggesting that our body has its own way to fight addiction.
Dong, the paper's senior author, says that the pro-relapse response is predominant after cocaine exposure. But since the anti-relapse response exists inside the brain, it could possibly be clinically tweaked to achieve therapeutic benefits.
Ma notes that this finding "may provide insight into ways to manipulate this yin-yang balance and hopefully provide new neurobiological targets for interventions designed to decrease relapse."
"The story won't stop here," Ma adds. "Our ongoing study is exploring some unusual but simple ways to beef up the endogenous anti-relapse mechanism."
