Residents of Bangalore are increasingly turning to pest control services to end the menace of bedbugs, rodents, cockroaches, mosquitoes and houseflies at their homes. But the trouble starts soon after they avail themselves of the services because its side effect, which is experienced in the form of skin irritation, allergies and suffocation.
However, customers have nobody to turn to to complain as there is no monitoring mechanism for administration of pest control services. Lax regulations and standards in administering chemicals, pesticides and insecticides in homes and office complexes sometimes leave customers in potentially hazardous conditions. A customer, who availed herself of the pest control service about three months ago from a reputed pest control agency, said that she felt suffocated, fell down and had to be hospitalised.
We followed all the instructions given by the pest control agency. But we were inconvenienced because of its side effects. There is a need to bring greater regulation among them so that customers are not duped, he said.
Queries made by The Hindu among various pest control agencies revealed that many of them were not registered and lacked technical know-how.
V. Murali, who runs Infopest, said that well-known agencies have good technical knowledge. We generally initiate pest control measures based on insect lifecycle and behaviour. The chemical concentration used for pest control is based on the body weight of the insect. If this is followed, there will be no side effects, he said.
B.K. Dharmarajan, Director, Department of Agriculture, said that while the inspectors of the Agriculture Department are responsible for approving storing and selling of insecticides and pesticides, they are not responsible for administrating these in households and other spaces.
Nirmala Buggi, in-charge Chief Health Officer, said Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike would obtain a feedback from the public on the pest control services to put in place a system to regulate them.

Looking at the bed bugs and mosquitoes on the Mysore-Ajmer Express on Thursday night, passengers of a particular coach pulled the chain and brought the train to a halt just before the Bangalore City Railway Station. The coach was then replaced with another and that delayed the train by two hours, but the passengers were unhappy with the changed coach also.
The action of the passengers has brought the focus on poor maintenance of coaches. When contacted, Railway officials attributed poor maintenance of train coaches to lack of time for carrying out pest control treatment.
A source in South Western Railway said: Post-pest control treatment, the coach requires 24-hour idling time. But they get only three hours. Coaches cannot be kept idle for 24 hours as there is shortage.
Vedavyas Koulagi, a passenger travelling to Hubli by the Mysore-Ajmer Express train, said that the second air-conditioned coach was old and filled with mosquitoes and bedbugs. Though the passengers complained about it to the ticket collector and the guard, nothing was done. So, they were forced to pull the chain just before the Bangalore City Railway Station arrived, thus forcing officials concerned to take action.
Official take on issue
Sunanda Arul, Additional Divisional Manager, Bangalore, South Western Railway, blamed the Mysore division for the Thursdays incident. She said that the maintenance of coaches was the responsibility of the Mysore Division and claimed that none of the Bangalore Division coaches had bedbugs as they undergo treatment for bedbugs with a natural pesticide.
We send clean coaches from here. But when the trains return to Bangalore, we find our pest-free coaches replaced with pest-infested coaches.

When scarifying a smaller area, use a spring-tined rake. Power tools are more convenient for larger lawns. Avoid scarifying too deeply, which can damage the turf (see Meet the expert, opposite). Powered machines are available for hire. Make sure the scarifying height is adjustable.
Aerate the lawn to relieve compaction, allowing for better movement of air and water around the roots. Aerating every two to three years is usually adequate for an average lawn. Concentrate on worn areas and areas prone to staying wet. Use a garden fork for smaller areas, spacing holes 4-6in (10-15cm) apart and deep.
If gardening on heavy clay or if standing water is a problem, consider hollow tining the lawn every three to four years. This extracts plugs of soil from the lawn. Sweep up the plugs, then rake a top-dressing into the holes. Hand-held and powered spiking machines and hollow tiners tools that look like a fork but with hollow prongs are available.
Lawn top-dressing is available from garden centres, but it may be more economical to buy larger quantities from specialist suppliers such as Rolawn (rolawn.co.uk). Apply 4.4-6.6lb per 10 sq ft (2-3kg per sq m), working the dressing in well with the back of a rake.
If the grass is patchy, especially after removing large amounts of moss, over-seed the bare patches at the rate of (-1oz per sq yd (17-34g per sq m).
If youre not using combined moss killer and feed, apply a low-nitrogen autumn feed. But be aware that overfeeding with high-nitrogen fertiliser will encourage fusarium wilt (snow mould infection).
As the weather cools down, increase the cutting height of utility lawns to 1in (40mm).
If you have a problem with chafer grubs and leather jacket (pests which can seriously damage lawns), there are no chemical treatments. Instead, apply biological-control nematodes from July to September against chafer grubs and from September to early October against leatherjackets. Make sure that the soil is moist before application to keep the nematodes alive and active.
Quick trouble shooter: red thread
Seeing red: red thread usually appears in late summer (ALAMY)

Its that time of year when the aspens are starting to turn gold, football is back on TV and hikers might want to wear neon orange when theyre out walking in the woods.
Now is not the best time to prance through the forest wearing a moose antler hat, said Mike Porras, regional spokesman with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Hunting is one of the safest outdoor sports, and hunters are required to take an education course that stresses safety before they buy a license in Colorado, he said. Still, wearing more visible clothing during the season isnt a bad idea.
Archery season began Saturday, Aug. 30, for deer and elk and will expand on Saturday, Sept. 6, to include moose until the bow hunting season ends Sept. 28. The small game and waterfowl seasons opened Monday, Sept. 1, around the state as well, and muzzle-loading rifle season will run from Sept. 13 through Sept. 21.
Every hunting season has specific legal requirements, regulations and limits for different animal species and geographic areas, Porras said.
In Colorado, the overall trend in the number of hunters has been downward in recent years, he said. The average hunter is a man in his 50s or 60s, and fewer young people are following in the hunting tradition of their parents.
At the same time, the number of people interested in hunting has been going up nationally, and more young people are discovering archery thanks to the popularity of The Hunger Games movies in the last couple years, he said. Archery is cool again.
People are picking up hunting for some of the same reasons others who may not have grown up around agriculture become farmers or gardeners. They might not agree with industrial meat production and want to provide organic meat for their families in a way they feel is more ethical.
Patrick Hoppe, 46, of Summit Cove, was practicing with his compound bow at the Summit County archery range in Dillon Thursday and said he enjoys hunting because of the way it allows him to put food on the table for himself, his wife and their three young sons.
Its easy to eat beef or chicken or something like that because someone else kills it, but when you actually have to look that thing in the eye and pull the trigger, it makes you think twice about it, said Hoppe, a landscape architect who is hoping to harvest an elk with a friend on a local bow hunt this weekend.

WASHINGTON Architect Frank Gehry is revising the design for a memorial honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower near the National Mall because of objections that delayed the project.
On Thursday, Gehry's Los Angeles-based team proposed eliminating metal tapestries on the sides of the memorial square, along with some columns. The designers are trying to win approval from the National Capital Planning Commission. The federal panel rejected a design in April.
Three stainless steel tapestries depicting the Kansas landscape of Ike's boyhood home were part of Gehry's original design. With two removed, one long tapestry would remain as a backdrop for a memorial park. The site includes statues of Eisenhower as president and World War II general.
Eisenhower Memorial Commission spokeswoman Chris Kelley Cimko said the group hopes the changes help to move the project forward.
Even with the changes, some critics oppose the use of tapestries and columns in the memorial.
Justin Shubow of the National Civic Art Society said the Kansas landscape is unrecognizable in Gehry's design.
Eisenhower's family has opposed the large columns and the inclusion of metal tapestries, calling for a smaller-scale approach. The concept has received mixed reviews from civic art and planning experts who must approve the design for the project to move forward.
One concern has been preserving views of the nearby Capitol between the memorial's huge columns. The view corridor is wider under the revised design with fewer columns, the memorial group said.
