(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Majid al Futtaim has announced another major milestone for City Centre Muscat a retail expansion worth RO27mn to introduce up to 60 new shopping and dining option in 10000sqm of new retail space. The project which will commence later this year will provide a significant boost to the sultanate's emerging retail sector in addition to fuelling the nation's economic and tourism aspirations.

'City Centre Muscat is undergoing an exciting transformation and Majid al Futtaim is pleased to be a positive contributor to the local economy while fostering the growth of the sultanate's retail and entertainment landscapes' said Dimitri Vazelakis executive managing director for Shopping Malls at Majid al Futtaim - Properties.

City Centre Muscat will be expanding its main ground floor into the existing car park space to create a new retail corridor that will connect each end of the shopping mall creating seamless traffic flow and accessibility for visitors. A new car park structure currently under construction will accommodate 700 vehicles to provide more convenience to shoppers.

The new retail precinct will be comprised of 60 new stores featuring a diverse collection of lifestyle-oriented brands including some exciting new flagship stores making their debut in Oman. City Centre Muscat will also have a new dining zone with five new casual-dining restaurants featuring different international cuisine.

City Centre Muscat recently completed Phase 1 of its redevelopment an RO8.3mn project which saw the opening of a ten screen VOX Cinemas plus enhancements made to Magic Planet and its food court dining area. Phase 2 of City Centre Muscat's redevelopment is expected to be complete in 2015.

Construction has begun on the long-awaited Newtown Promenade project on the site of a closed Acme Market in Newtown Township.

Community and business officials broke ground on the project Thursday afternoon. Construction is expected to last between eight and 10 months.

Barracks restoration begins

This morning iwi and Devonport-Takapuna Local Board marked the start of the barracks restoration project at Fort Takapuna Recreation Reserve.

The two barracks at Narrow Neck, built to house military personnel during World War Two, will be sympathetically restored in keeping with their heritage value by Construct Interiors NZ Ltd.

The site blessing is a major milestone for the project which has been a Devonport-Takapuna Local Board priority for three years.

We are very pleased to be starting work on restoring the barracks at a site which is so prominent in Aucklands military history, says Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chair Mike Cohen.

Once restored, the two barracks will be available for community groups to use and hire space for meetings and other activities.

The restoration includes re-roofing, structural and insulation works, new kitchen and bathroom areas, and surrounding landscaping.

Work is expected to be complete in March 2015, in time for commemorations of the Battle of Passchendaele. ENDS

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (MCT) When technical colleges were constructed with a "get in, get out, get a job" mentality, there wasn't much room left for gathering places.

That's why St. Cloud Technical & Community College President Joyce Helens wants to create a communal space on campus with a new and improved center that directly addresses the needs of returning veterans.

Though the school currently has a small designated veteran's space, Helens says the college saw both a need and an opportunity to expand and centralize a resource center for veterans, their families and the community.

"We're learning through unfortunate trial and error that PTSD doesn't only affect the veteran," veteran and faculty member Brian Volkmuth said. "It often reaches the spouse or even the children."

"That is a big concern," he said.

The college wants the Veterans Resource Center, its current working name, to help be a solution.

Bringing together resources

Volkmuth is the faculty adviser for SCTCC's Student Veterans Organization and is himself a veteran, having served in the Marines.

As discussions began about relocating and expanding the school's veterans center, Helens says more and more organizations jumped on board.

"Everybody who has anything to do with veterans is at the table," Helens said.
