A while back I had a customer come in and she was in an area of the store that had the commercial window-cleaning supplies.
We carry that because we have a few window washers in the area. She was loading up all this equipment and so I asked her about her company. She then told me she was just getting supplies to clean her windows at her home.
I asked her if she had ever heard of Rinz EZ? Rinz EZ is the smartest way to clean your windows. You simply put a package of Rinz EZ soap in the applicator and add water and stir. Then you attach it to your hose and start cleaning the windows. You want to do this in the cool of the morning because the Rinz EZ sheets off cleanly to leave you a spot-free window. If the glass is hot, the Rinz EZ will dry too quickly. You can easily do 16 windows in 30 minutes. You can even reach the second-story windows from the ground with the Rinz EZ applicator. No more getting on a ladder. When I had a boat and a lake house, I always cleaned the boat and wet jets with the left over Rinz EZ. You can wash your car too, its very versatile. After I showed my customer the Rinz EZ she put back all the commercial stuff and walked out with one bag and a much easier job in mind.
Now to the email
Question: Hey Johnnie! I have really been trying to be as energy conscious as I can. I know one time you talked about a insulation that goes in the wall switch. What was the name, so that I know what to ask for at my local hardware store?
Answer: They are called MD Dual Purpose Light Switch Sealers. You remove the plate and put the sealer over the switch and then put back on the switch plate. Its just that easy. If you think that this is a waste of time, just put your hand over your switch plate, and then again after installing a switch sealer.
Question: I have some brick floors in a sun room out back. They used to be real shiny, but now they are just kind of dull. I had a company come out and quote me a price on re-sealing the floors. It was a shocker. So I thought I would do it myself. Do you have any suggestions?
Answer: There is a product called Quick Shine and it will put a shine on those bricks in no time flat. On a clean floor, mop on the Quick Shine and let dry. You will immediately see a shine. You want more shine? Just keep adding coats! I did my wood floor in my dining room in 10 minutes. And its not a wax, its a polymer finish so you never have to strip it off, you just walk it off. When the floor is not as shiny as you like just put on another coat! Instant shine again.
Question: I have a garage door that struggles sometimes because the rails get dirty from all the grease I put on them. I have to take all the grease and dirt out, and that is a real job. Do you think there is a better way to keep the rails lubricated so that the doors go up and down smoothly? I know its not good for the opener to stop and start when the doors get hung.
Answer: That grease makes the doors move smooth as first, but after the grease attracts dirt and dust, it doesnt work as well. My suggestion is to remove the grease with paint thinner on a rag. After the rails are all clean, spray them with Tri Flo. Tri Flo is a superior lubricant that doesnt attract dust. I like to call it Liquid Ball Bearings. You can use Tri Flo on motorcycle chains, bearings, locks, fishing equipment. Almost anything that needs a lubricant, you can use Tri Flo.

Ten Sequoia Union High School District students are seeing what its like this week to live with very little, while helping install a water purification system for those less fortunate than them.
The students, seniors part of Woodside High Schools Green Academy and Redwood High Schools REAL (Redwoods Environmental Academy of Leadership) cohorts, will travel to Redwood Citys sister city, Ciudad Guzman in Mexicos state of Jalisco during Labor Day week. The Peninsula Sunrise Rotary Foundation program H2OpenDoors is donating the SunSpring water purification system, which will ultimately benefit a district of 4,000 of the poorest citizens who receive water from a highly chlorinated and undrinkable city water system.
The four students and teacher from Redwood High and the six students and teacher from Woodside High said they were looking forward to being exposed to a new culture. The students started fundraising last year for the trip and raised about $5,000 through car washes, bake sales, family friends, door-to-door solicitations and other events. For some, its their first time on a plane. Others will be leaving the United States for the first time.
Ive never been out of the country, said Woodside student Keely Camp. Its a great opportunity. Water is a big issue.
This population center currently spends 10 pesos per liter on bottled water each day. That is about 77 cents, or more than $1 million per year, on bottled water. This should be alleviated with the SunSpring, which can purify more than 20,000 liters per day from virtually any contaminated water source, according to Jon Kaufman, the director of the project, who is going on the trip. Kaufman has taken other students on a similar trips to install purification systems in the past, including a trip to Northern Thailand.
It was transformative, he said. One student asked, Im thirsty, is there a drinking fountain? There was a pond infested with E. coli (from which to drink). Theyll be meeting their peers over there and painting a mural with the theme of water education. I hope they come back seeing the world is bigger than what they think.
SunSprings are solar- and wind-powered water purification plants that require no electricity or fuel, and remove all bacteria, viruses and other contaminants using membrane technology. With a design life of over 10 years, they require only one hour of downtime for simple maintenance procedures each month. Manufactured in Rocky Ford, Colorado, by Innovative Water Technologies, the systems are up and running within three hours.
Following the installation, the students will tour the city government, including the metropolitan water company facilities which serve more than 110,000 residents. Mayor Jose Luis Orozco Aldana will hold a water party to celebrate the installation.
During the final three days in Mexico, the students will travel to Guanajuato State and Centro Fox, the international conference complex headed by former Mexican president Vicente Fox.
We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with California high school students in support of H2OpenDoors and Rotary, Fox said in a prepared statement. The world needs to grow global citizens, people of high character who care about the poorest among us.

WARREN Some 90 years after it last powered a mill there, Chuck Eddy thinks putting a dam back on Black Brook along with a multi-use pond would help put the town famous for its Redstone rocket on the Green back on the tourism map. And by doing so, Eddy sees such changes as a means to provide some much-needed economic vitality to the town.
A longtime Warren resident, Eddy owns the property on the corner of route 25 and 25C, currently home to Greenhouse Pizza and behind which Black Brook runs on its way to joining the Baker River.
The brook, a short distance downstream from the pizzeria, had been dammed since Colonial times, according to Eddy, who said that the town fathers needed someone to grind corn and wheat into flour for local consumption.
Like their brethren who did likewise throughout New England, those early Warren leaders came upon a scheme known as a mill privilege under which a private party, in exchange for making flour, would be entitled to earn a profit and have what Eddy said was the exclusive license to construct a dam, flood a pond and with rights to all flowage necessary in order to power the new mill.
The flour mill on Black Brook eventually became a lumber mill and remained in operation until about 1927, when it was damaged by a torrential flood, said Eddy. Three years later, when then-owner William Park died, his daughter sold the property to Charles Little, although the town of Warren, he maintained, reserved the mill privileges.
Later, Little built what Eddy called a fine home at the site and operated a lunch room there, which after several iterations and owners, is now Greenhouse Pizza. Down a steep bank from the restaurants parking lot, the base logs of the log-and-stone crib-style dam are still visible in Black Brook as is some brick foundation on the bank.
The dam had been 15 feet deep, 40 feet across and 9 feet high, said Eddy.
Under a tentative plan that Eddy will present to the community at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at Warren Town Hall, the dam, mill and a half-mile long pond would be re-created, resulting in what Eddy said would be a historic-village destination for tourism, construction employment, then service jobs and opportunity for small business entrepreneurs.
Eddy sees a community asset that could include a hydro-electric generator at the dam site as well as in the mill a harness shop and exhibits such as wood turning, blacksmithing, carding wool and weaving.
He said the Park Mill Pond could have lighted walkways and be accessible in warm weather to canoes, kayaks and paddle boats, while in the winter it could host ice skaters and also be popular with cross-country skiers and other outdoorsmen and women.

A simple thing can change your lifelike tripping on a rug or slipping on a wet floor. If you fall, you could break a bone, like thousands of older men and women do each year. A broken bone might not sound awful. But, for older people, a break can be the start of more serious problems.
Many things can cause a fall. Your eyesight, hearing, and reflexes might not be as sharp as they were when you were younger. Diabetes, heart disease, or problems with your thyroid, nerves, feet, or blood vessels can affect your balance. Some medicines can cause you to feel dizzy or sleepy, making you more likely to fall. And for people with osteoporosis which affects both women and men even a minor fall may be dangerous.
But don't let a fear of falling keep you from being active. Doing things like getting together with friends, gardening, walking, or going to the local senior center helps you stay healthy. The good news is that there are simple ways you can prevent most falls.
Take The Right Steps
If you take care of your overall health, you may be able to lower your chances of falling. Most of the time, falls and accidents don't "just happen." Here are a few hints that will help you avoid falls and broken bones:
STAY PHYSICALLY ACTIVE. Plan an exercise program that is right for you. Regular exercise improves muscles and makes you stronger. It also helps keep your joints, tendons, and ligaments flexible. Mild weight-bearing activities, such as walking or climbing stairs, may slow bone loss from osteoporosis.
HAVE YOUR EYES AND HEARING TESTED. Even small changes in sight and hearing may cause you to fall. When you get new eyeglasses, take time to get used to them. Always wear your glasses when you need them. If you have a hearing aid, be sure it fits well, and wear it.
FIND OUT ABOUT THE SIDE EFFECTS OF MEDICINES YOU TAKE. If a drug makes you sleepy or dizzy, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
GET ENOUGH SLEEP. If you are sleepy, you are more likely to fall.
LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL YOU DRINK. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your balance and reflexes.

NUMBER 3 Flowery Bank is a deceptively spacious and beautifully presented two bedroom cottage, set in a sought-after location on the edge of the village of Broughton.
On the market with the Malton office of Boulton and Cooper Stephensons, there is an open day at the cottage on Saturday, from 11am until noon.
The cottage is complimented by substantial and delightfully landscaped gardens, extending to in excess of half an acre, with brick outbuildings and a timber field shelter.
The 12ft living room enjoys a front aspect and has a multi-fuel cast iron stove set into a recess on a stone-flagged hearth. It has a stripped pine floor, double radiator, exposed and timber beams (painted white).
The kitchen is fitted with a range of stained solid maple wall and base units and solid beech worksurfaces. There is a Belfast sink with chrome mixer taps, tiled and mosaic tiled splashbacks, plumbing for washing machine, exposed beams (again painted white), stone flagged floor and double radiator.
The kitchen opens to an 11ft dining room which enjoys rear and side views and has a stripped pine floor and double radiator.
There is a 17ft conservatory of uPVC construction on a brick base with internal and external French doors, stone-flagged floor and four double radiators. There is also a downstairs cloakroom and WC.
On the first floor are two bedrooms and a bathroom. Both bedrooms have pine floors and double radiators and the bathroom is fitted with a modern, white three-piece suite. The room has a vaulted ceiling with Velux roof light, fitted cupboards and double radiator.
Outside is a small gravelled front garden and to the rear is a sunken patio area with attractive planting along the trellis and an outside power socket.
Steps with trellis archways lead to the first part of the garden with meandering stone-flagged walkways sweeping through attractive herbaceous borders and lawned areas. There is a brick shed which has power and light, an Al Fresco patio area and a timber shed.
