The Canada goose is one of the most common North American pest birds, known for stubbornly returning to the same areas year after year. Populations of year-round resident geese have been exploding in recent years, while migratory birds add to their numbers seasonally.
In the United States, September marks the return of birds from Canada joining the resident flocks, and the problem gets worse as winter goes on. For this reason, Bird-X pest control experts recommend setting up goose prevention devices now when resident geese are no longer attached to their nests, and before new geese move in and get too comfortable. The key is prevention as early on as possible.
Canada geese are complex creatures with extremely sharp sensory capabilities in both hearing and vision. They follow instinctive cyclical behaviors throughout the year. Knowledge of these seasonal variations is essential to implementing successful strategies for long-term Canada goose control.
Because Canada geese are creatures of habit, once a habitat has been chosen they are known for returning year after year. They select areas that meet their needs; grassy areas and especially those with bodies of water, such as golf courses, corporate grounds, and hospital grounds provide these birds with everything they need. Grass itself serves as a nutritious food source, which is why these birds are so often found on lawns. By using a liquid aversion product such as Bird Stop to cover the lawns, birds find the grass no longer appetizing and will seek out grassy areas that taste better. This is the same product used by farmers to protect fruit; it is harmless and commonly used.
Geese also respond to sound technology, but recorded sounds need to be specific to their species (most bird callers are not made for geese). Dr. Philip Whitford, Ph.D., who has studied Canada geese for over 30 years, recorded the only documented natural recording of a Canada goose alarm call. Combined with the Canada goose alert call, these sounds were used to create the Bird-X GooseBuster. Tested by Dr. Whitford over many years, this is the most effective, continuously relied upon goose control product available on the market today.
Visual decoys can also be beneficial, especially when combined with the tactics mentioned above (by creating a multi-sensory attack and making an area as unwelcoming as possible, geese are far less likely to get very comfortable). When placed on property early in the season, freshly returning geese will quickly see that predators have moved into their territory, think this area is not safe, and will move on.
General bird control means the clean-up of any bird mess (feather, droppings, and any remaining nests), as birds look for these markings to recognize safe territory. This is also just good housekeeping, and any responsible building owner, facility manager, or landscaper should be doing this anyway, since bird feces can carry disease, fungus, and other potentially dangerous materials. Geese themselves can be dangerous to humans as they are prone to attack, especially if they are allowed to nest. Furthermore, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 prevents the removal of geese when they are actively nesting until the goslings are old enough to move on safely; therefore prevention is in anyones best interest.
By installing goose control methods now, the risk of a larger goose problem later is greatly reduced. Once nesting starts in later winter and early spring, geese are much more challenging to move; the best opportunity to start a program is now in late summer and early Fall, when adults have recovered from their molt and goslings are capable of leaving.
Bird-X, Inc. is the leading international brand of bird control products since 1964, and is dedicated to protecting human health, wildlife and the environment in which we all live. The Chicago-based company manufactures a complete line of unique pest control products with an unmatched focus on quality, efficacy, and customer service.

ATLANTIC CITY - As the final guests checked out of the Revel Casino Hotel on Monday morning, some said they were convinced that the $2.4 billion bankrupt property would reopen under a new owner.
"I don't think it's going to stay closed," said Paul Hergen, 42, who, with his wife and 3-year-old daughter, was enjoying Revel's two-acre landscaped patio and its wide views of the Atlantic Ocean.
"I think it's the most amazing property there's ever been in Atlantic City," said Hergen, of Greenwich, Conn., who said he has been coming to Atlantic City since he was 18.
Hergen and other hotel guests were scheduled to check out by 11 a.m. Monday. The casino was supposed to continue operating until 6 a.m. Tuesday, but early Sunday evening only a smattering of gamblers remained on the floor.
Off the casino floor, loyal gamblers were collecting a final gift from Revel: an eight-piece melamine bowl set, including measuring cups. One couple walked away with a menu from Amada restaurant signed by the chefs.
The closure of Revel, which opened in April 2012 and employed 2,814 in July, follows the end of casino operations on Sunday at Showboat after 27 years. Trump Plaza is scheduled to close Sept. 16, bringing total job losses to about 5,700 for the three casinos. All are victims of the proliferation of casinos in Pennsylvania and other neighboring states since 2006.
But in its short time of operation, Revel won some diehard fans.
Three friends from New York, for example, regulars who stayed overnight at Revel at least once a month, were having fun taking pictures of each other on one of the long escalators that lead up to the hotel lobby on the 11th floor.
Jayne Lord, of the Bronx, and Lucille Alexander, of West Chester County, N.Y., wore T-shirts that said "RIP My Beloved Revel." On the back there was a campy comic-book figure of a woman crying and saying, "My Revel is gone."
Friend Robert Lorenzo said Revel grew on him. "The more I came here, the more I loved it," said Lorenzo, also of the Bronx.

DEAR ABBY: My wife walks around our house nude or topless with the shades open, and anybody walking outside can see in. Recently she did this while some painting contractors were working around our house. I have begged her not to, to no avail. What should I do?
- More Modest in North Carolina
DEAR M.M.: It appears you married an exhibitionist. You might point out to her that parading around that way could be considered disrespectful to the workers she's exposed herself to. But don't be surprised if she's unwilling to change because it may give her some kind of thrill. (I'm sure it also gives the viewers something to talk about around the dinner table.)
DEAR ABBY: My husband, "Patrick," and I were married last year. On the morning of our wedding, his grandmother, "Sally," died. It was very sudden. Everyone assumed we'd postpone it, but we didn't.
Abby, my husband is still emotionally distraught over her death. Patrick's parents were absent from his life and Grandma Sally had raised him. Did we make a mistake by not postponing our wedding? How can I help him?
- Sad New Wife in South Carolina
DEAR SAD NEW WIFE: Life is for the living. I don't know how large your wedding was, but if there were contracts involved (hall, flowers, music, caterer, guests coming in from out of town, etc.), you were right to follow through with your plans. I am sure that's what Grandma Sally would have wanted.
Please convey to your husband how sorry I am for his loss. Because he is moving so slowly through the grieving process, it would be helpful for him to contact a grief support group. To find one, he can ask a doctor, clergyman or hospice for a referral.

Dear Abby: Please remind beachgoers that they need to leave their fire pits OPEN and not cover them with sand. My 16-month-old grandnephew was walking on a beach in Carmel, Calif., with his mom and dad when he suffered burns to his feet from walking across sand beneath which were hot coals. It will take at least three weeks for this dear baby's feet to heal from those burns.
People don't realize that covering the coals with sand hides them and keeps them hot for up to 24 hours! Beach fires must be treated differently from those in a forest, where they should be covered with dirt because of the surrounding trees.
Beach Etiquette
Dear B.E.: I'm printing your letter not only as a warning to beachgoers who might be using fire pits, but also to the parents of small children because hot buried coals can be a hidden danger to their little ones. Because the coals cannot be seen, children sometimes confuse fire pits ringed by rocks with "sandboxes," and the results can be tragic.
According to the University of California Irvine's Regional Burn Center, "coals should be extinguished by drenching them with water, waiting five minutes and drenching them again." When water isn't available, the coals should simply be allowed to burn out.

A couple who quit their office jobs to set up their own company are painting the town red with their fledgling decorating business.
Francesca Lock and Louise Berriman, both 35, left their jobs in human resources and sales for food processing and packaging company Tetra Pak to set up their venture in Berkshire in 2008.
The pair, who met on holiday in Australia in 2002, decided to move north to Manchester in 2012 with ambitions to grow their company, Berriman and Lock, but found it difficult to re-build their business in a new area and attract the large contracts they wanted.
That was until the couple teamed up with City West Housing Trust and joined its Dont Keep It Under Your Hat programme, which was set up to support people looking to start-up and grow their own businesses.
Lock said: We decided to go it alone after we decorated our house and realised we had a real talent for the job
While we know a great deal about painting and decorating, we didnt instinctively know how to grow our business, especially as we set up during the economic downturn.
But when we sat down with the team, we found that by being two women going it alone, we had our own unique selling point. Since then the business has grown and grown.
The Salford landlords programme helps small businesses based in and around its neighbourhoods to get off the ground by offering free one-to-one consultations and workshops.
Over six months the team helped Lock and Berriman to create a business action plan, and found new ways for the company to diversify its offerings such as selling recycled and re-decorated furniture as a side business.
The housing provider, which owns and manages 14,600 homes in Salford, also introduced the pair to construction contractors Queensbridge, which was so impressed by their work that it took them on to decorate 50 City West properties their biggest contract to date.
