HOLLYWOOD
It's been awhile since construction cranes have graced downtown Hollywood.
That's about to change.
For more than a decade, Hollywood has courted development, aiming to revitalize its downtown. After a stubborn recession and a long wait, downtown Hollywood is finally on the verge of a building boom.
Old buildings long past their prime are slowly giving way to more cosmopolitan buildings.
In August, a 12-story apartment building that occupied the northeast corner of Young Circle for the past 36 years was reduced to rubble. In its place will rise a 25-story apartment tower. The aging Great Southern Hotel on the west side of the circle will soon be replaced by a 19-story apartment tower.
Plans are also in the works for the Hollywood Bread Building on the circle's south side and possibly the Publix plaza on the east side, officials say.
"Someone might leave Hollywood for a few years and come back and not know where they are," Commissioner Dick Blattner said, only half joking. "They'd think, 'This is not the Hollywood I left five years ago.' That would be a good thing."
It's all about the timing, says Jack McCabe, a real estate analyst in Deerfield Beach.
Since 2012, developers have announced plans for 237 new condo projects and 68 major apartment complexes in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, McCabe said.

Heights at Worthington Place By CANDY BROOKS Tuesday September 2, 2014 8:07 PM
The owners of a new apartment complex touts spectacular views, granite countertops, a dog wash and two chargers for electric cars.
Heights at Worthington Place tenants will have those amenities this week as the first of two apartment buildings opens next to Worthington's mall.
Ten of the 59 one- and two-bedroom units in the smaller of the two buildings were leased prior to the complex's Sept. 2 opening, and owners say they're confident the rest will fill soon.
Tom Hoying and Russ Hunter of Crawford Hoying, which built both of the buildings, hosted Worthington city officials on a tour Aug. 28.
After looking at one of the two-bedroom apartments in the four-story building, they toured the roof, where gardens, grills, and tables and chairs are included, with towering views of Worthington, the Olentangy River and beyond.
"That will be the most beautiful sunset view in the city of Worthington," City Council President Bonnie Michael said. "You can sit there and see the whole western sky."
Each apartment comes with either a balcony or a patio.
The apartments also come with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, walk-in closets, and vinyl flooring and carpeting.
Only one- and two-bedroom units are available in the smaller building, but the larger building that faces West Wilson Bridge Road will include 11 three-bedroom apartments.

Sorry, clean freaks. No matter how well you scrub your home, its covered in bacteria from your own body. And if you pack up and move, new research shows, youll rapidly transfer your unique microbial fingerprint to the doorknobs, countertops and floors in your new house, too.
In fact, researchers who studied seven families in Illinois, Washington and California could easily match up who lived where using their microscopic roommates, almost like CSI for germs.
Last weeks study is part of an effort to understand how the trillions of mostly beneficial bacteria that live in and on our bodies whats called the human microbiome interact with bugs in the environment to affect our health.
We have so little information about where the microbes come from that shape our microbiome, whether its for health or disease, said microbiologist Jack Gilbert of the Argonne National Laboratory and University of Chicago.
Where do people spend most of their time? Its the indoor environment. The best place to look at that was the home, said Gilbert, who led the Home Microbiome Project and included his own family.
Right at birth, babies start picking up microbes on the skin, in the nose, in the gut that eventually make up living communities that will share their bodies throughout life. Many of these bugs play critical roles in digestion, the immune system and other health-inducing factors. Others may make it easier to gain weight, or influence disease. What shapes the balance of good bugs and bad is a huge scientific question.
Hospital studies make clear that someone who already is sick can catch a new infection from pathogenic bacteria left behind by a previous patient.
In contrast, the new study examines healthy people, and it marks an important step: Beginning to show whats normal in a regular home, said Lisa Helbling Chadwick of the National Institutes of Health. Thats a key question before scientists can explore how to possibly create healthier homes.
You have to think about the microbiome of your home as part of your homes immune system, said Chadwick, of NIHs National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, who wasnt involved with Gilberts project. Instead of relying on killing bugs to stop the spread of infection, maybe we need to cultivate better bugs.
For the study, Gilbert recruited seven households that included 15 adults, three children, three dogs and a cat. For six weeks, participants collected samples of the microscopic bugs living on and around them by swabbing the hands, feet, noses and paws of everyone in the household, plus doorknobs, light switches, floors and countertops.

Thanks largely due to the construction of two new homes along with a pair of commercial remodeling projects, local construction is almost on pace with 2013.
