Mumbai, Sep 1: Union Minister for Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy Sources, Piyush Goyal launched the the 'Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana a National Mission on Financial Inclusion in the city, simultaneously with the national launch at New Delhi.

The primary objective of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is to provide bank accounts to every household in the country and make available basic banking services like cash withdrawal and deposit, money transfer, balance enquiry, RuPay Debit card facility and extending mobile banking facility.

Speaking on the occasion, Goyal said, "Financial inclusion has been the priority of the NDA government and has observed that extension of banking services to all households would promote savings and contribute to overall economic growth." He said, "By announcing the launch of Pradhan Manti Jan Dhan Yojana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a gift of empowerment to the poor of the country."

Goyal added that financial inclusion is not just the responsibility of the state or the bank managers. He said that it should be a people driven programme, with participation of every citizen. "Historically, middle class brings transformation in the society. It has now to take lead to inculcate banking habits among those who provide necessary services to it," the minister added.

Calling for citizens participation for making the scheme successful, he said, "Ask your maid servant, washerman or the driver to open a bank account and try to make payments to them through cheque and then imagine the multiplier effect, it would have!"

Spades and buckets get to work in Scarborough

The start of work to rebuild the quake-damaged Scarborough Paddling Pool is being marked with a community sod-turning event on Tuesday 2 September.

Children from the Sumner community are bringing their spades and buckets for an en masse sod-turning event, making them the first to start work to restore a beloved favourite that has been a familiar sight on Sumners seaside landscape.

It is great to see work starting on fixing this paddling pool, says HagleyFerrymead Councillor and Community Committee Chair Yani Johanson.

The replacement facility will blend the traditional with the modern to create a fun and exciting play environment. Improvements include a splash-pad feature, which will contain water-toys and jets selected by kids in the community. It will contribute to Sumner returning as a key summer destination for young families and children from across the city to enjoy.

The event has been organised by the Sumner Community Residents Association. Speakers will include HagleyFerrymead Community Board Chair Sara Templeton will speak at the event.

Were not just replacing what was there the Council is modernising the entire facility, and its going to reflect the communitys desire for something more interactive, Ms Templeton says.

If you need a testament to how beloved the Scarborough Paddling Pool had been, then all you have to do is look at the passion and commitment thats come from the Sumner community to getting it restored.

Construction itself will begin the week commencing Monday 8 September. It is hoped to have the new and improved Scarborough Paddling Pool in use by Christmas 2014.

Land would become 'state land,' clearing the way for the development of a new Israeli settlement

    - September 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (CNN) -

Israel came under fire Monday for claiming close to 1,000 acres of land in the Palestinian West Bank.

Israel announced Sunday that the land in and around the Wadi Fukin valley, would become "state land," clearing the way for the development of a new Israeli settlement. The affected land lies near Bethlehem and close to Bitar Ilit -- one of the biggest Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Farmers in the area have 45 days to appeal Israel's decision to claim the land.

"The seizure of such a large swathe of land risks paving the way for further settlement activity, which -- as the United Nations has reiterated on many occasions -- is illegal under international law and runs totally counter to the pursuit of a two-state solution," United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement Monday.

UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond issued a similar statement, criticizing the move.

"This is a particularly ill-judged decision that comes at a time when the priority must be to build on the cease-fire in Gaza. It will do serious damage to Israel's standing in the international community," he said. "Our position on settlements is clear: they are illegal under international law, present an obstacle to peace and take us further away from a two state solution at a time when negotiations to achieve this objective urgently need to be resumed."

Hammond said efforts should be focused on securing a durable cease-fire in Gaza and lasting peace. "We strongly urge the government of Israel to reverse this decision," he said.

    Teens' abduction

Israeli officials told CNN the expropriation was linked to the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers who disappeared from the West Bank settlement of Gush Etzion in June. Tensions between Israel and Hamas ratcheted up after the teens' bodies were found June 30.
