The long-term partner of well-known Melbourne interior designer Stuart Rattle has pleaded guilty to his murder.

Michael O'Neill, 47, pleaded guilty to murdering Mr Rattle, his partner of 16 years, and setting fire to his South Yarra apartment.

Mr Rattle's body was found by firefighters at his South Yarra home last December.

O'Neill's barrister Ruth Shann told Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday her client was in a "fragile state of mind" and had lost 20kg since his arrest.

She applied to have Mr O'Neill's record of interview with police suppressed from the media in court, saying his "intense distress is apparent" in the interview.

She said there was also an absence of an explanation for why O'Neill "spontaneously reacted as he did".

Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge rejected her application.

O'Neill, of South Yarra, pleaded guilty to murder and arson.

"I'm guilty your honour," O'Neill told the court.

Stuart Rattle murder: Melbourne man Michael O'Neill pleads guilty to killing interior designer partner

    - September 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ABC Stuart Rattle was found dead in his South Yarra home in December, 2013.

Melbourne man Michael O'Neill has pleaded guilty to murdering his partner, prominent interior designer Stuart Rattle.

Mr Rattle's body was found at the couple's South Yarra home, in Melbourne's inner south-east, last December after a fire.

Police alleged O'Neill killed his partner five days before his body was discovered.

Court documents allege O'Neill hit Mr Rattle over the head with a saucepan, before strangling him with a dog leash.

The documents show he then travelled to the couple's farm in Daylesford and continued to socialise as normal, as though nothing had happened.

A committal hearing for O'Neill was to begin today, but he instead pleaded guilty to murder and arson.

The court heard O'Neill was distressed in custody and lost 20 kilograms while in the Melbourne Remand Centre.

His lawyer sought unsuccessfully to have details of the case suppressed ahead of his plea hearing.

He was committed to the Supreme Court on September 19 for a directions hearing.

A vacant house in the northwest valley was destroyed by a fire Sunday night, according to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters were dispatched at around 10:15 p.m. to a house fire on Crestline Drive, near Torrey Pines Drive and Washington Avenue. When they arrived on scene, the fire had already engulfed the one-story wood house, according to LVFR. Firefighters contained the fire in less than ten minutes, but the house was destroyed.

Neighbors told fire investigators that the house had been vacant for two years but appeared to have been used by squatters. Investigators found evidence of squatters left inside the building, and also suspect copper wiring had been stolen.

According to investigators, the estimated damage to the house was $57,000.
