Lord Mayor Christy Burke: told members he had met people outside the chamber on the street preparing to sleep in the porches. Photograph: Eric Luke
During a debate on housing at the monthly meeting yesterday, officials said there were measures that can be taken in addition to direct State funding of social housing.
The officials were responding to Lord Mayor Christy Burke, who is a volunteer with night-time services for the homeless and who called for action rather than words .
He told members he had earlier met people outside the chamber on the street preparing to sleep in the porches. I just cant handle that much more; I really cant, he said.
Green Party councillor Ciarn Cuffe said the council should audit its own resources in terms of sites and land and see how these could be developed to ease the problem.
The councils housing manager Dick Brady said there were sources of finance which were willing to invest in housing.
Mr Brady said while he was anxious to move ahead with his invitation to property professionals and builders, he had been told that standing orders required he bring his plan to the next housing strategic policy committee, scheduled for next month.
Under the timetable, if the strategic policy committee approve Mr Bradys plan, the proposal could get formal approval in November, the Lord Mayor said.

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - If your bathroom could use a little love, it is a smart place to spend money.
Behind kitchens, bathrooms provide the second best return on investment when remodeling.
Should you swap your tub for a shower?
Bathroom remodeling contractor, Dan Updike, said many of his customers are choosing to ditch bulky tubs in favor of more luxurious showers.
"The bathing generation is kind of gone by the wayside. We are a pretty much shower generation anymore. So rather than have the bathtub that you lift your leg over that's a confined space if you put in a large shower it's more of the spa-type shower," Updike said.
"The trend these days is to convert bathtubs into showers. There are so many choices when it comes to showers and they potentially take up less space than the large garden tubs that have been historically in homes. If you are a homeowner that wants to age in place, grow old in your home, a shower can be a safer alternative for you," Angie Hicks of Angie's List said.
When it comes to walk-in showers, the design options are nearly endless. They can be customized to fit just about any size, shape, or lifestyle.
"As far as options for the shower with the older generation the grab bars, maybe some corner seats, some hand held showers, things like that. Inside shampoo holders or corner shelves, we always have some type of shelving go into the unit. Frame-less shower doors so it's more glass, less metal. And then it's a matter of what to put on the shower walls whether it's tile with accent trim tile or go to the solid surface wall system," Updike said.
Updike said converting a standard five-foot tub into a shower typically starts around $4,500. But prices can quickly increase depending on the materials and options you choose.
"If you want to go tub to a shower it's very simple to do, you just need to move plumbing a little bit for the new setup. Other than that they make shower bases the same size as bathtubs. We normally use solid surface bases instead of plastic or fiberglass. They are very heavy duty and come in a variety of colors to coordinate whether it's tile on the walls or solid surface wall panels," Updike said.

If your bathroom could use a little love -- it's a smart place to spend money. Behind kitchens -- bathrooms provide the second best return on investment when remodeling. Bathroom remodeling contractor, Dan Updike, says many of his customers are choosing to ditch bulky tubs in favor of more luxurious showers.
"The bathing generation is kind of gone by the wayside. We are a pretty much shower generation anymore. So rather than have the bathtub that you lift your leg over that's a confined space if you put in a large shower it's more of the spa-type shower."
"The trend these days is to convert bathtubs into showers. There are so many choices when it comes to showers and they potentially take up less space than the large garden tubs that have been historically in homes. If you are a homeowner that wants to age in place, grow old in your home, a shower can be a safer alternative for you," says Angie Hicks from "Angie's List."
When it comes to walk-in showers, the design options are nearly endless. They can be customized to fit just about any size, shape or lifestyle.
"As far as options for the shower with the older generation the grab bars, maybe some corner seats, some hand held showers, things like that. Inside shampoo holders or corner shelves, we always have some type of shelving go into the unit. Frame-less shower doors so it's more glass, less metal. And then it's a matter of what to put on the shower walls whether it's tile with accent trim tile or go to the solid surface wall system," says Updike.
Updike says converting a standard five-foot tub into a shower typically starts around $4,500, but prices can quickly increase depending on the materials and options you choose.
"If you want to go tub to a shower it's very simple to do, you just need to move plumbing a little bit for the new setup. Other than that they make shower bases the same size as bathtubs. We normally use solid surface bases instead of plastic or fiberglass. They are very heavy duty and come in a variety of colors to coordinate whether it's tile on the walls or solid surface wall panels."
While nearly every bathtub can be converted into a shower, it's not always the best idea.
"Replacing a tub for a shower is not for everyone. If you only have one bathroom in your house you want to be sure you keep a tub because what will end up happening is you'll hurt your resale value. Families with kids, they like tubs and without one it can hurt you," says Hicks.
Angie's List says this is a job best left for the professionals -- so make sure you hire a reputable contractor. If the company has a showroom -- go check it out. Being able to visualize your project before it gets underway can help define your expectations...and illustrate how design and layout choices will work.

When Isaac Dorbor opened his barbershop in the Prosperity Shopping Plaza three years ago, traffic to the shop was steady, his employees juggled 200 clients on average and the business saw about 30 walk-in customers on a slow day.
But that was before construction on Interstate 485 in northeast Mecklenburg spawned new traffic patterns, closed roads and changed street names. Now the employees at World Class Barbers are lucky if they cut eight heads on a slow day, Dorbor said. Two barbers have left the shop and revenues have dropped by 30 percent, he said.
Dorbor is one of about a half-dozen business owners in the area who say they have seen declining revenues some as much as 70 percent because construction has taken away their frontage and frustrates customers. Some say theyre preparing to spend thousands to reprint fliers, brochures and menus after city officials changed part of Prosperity Church Road to Docia Crossing.
Its not insignificant money when you spend $2,000 to $3,000 on advertising, said Danny Leon, who owns CKO Kickboxing in the plaza with his wife, Amy. We spent a great deal of money on literature.
Expected to open in December, the final 5.7-mile section of I-485s outer loop caps a 25-year, 67-mile project. The latest roadwork rerouted part of Prosperity Church Road, and the businesses in Prosperity Shopping Plaza now have a Docia Crossing address.
The city renamed that stretch of Prosperity Church Road to minimize confusion, said Doreen Szymanski, spokeswoman with the Charlotte Department of Transportation.
In this case, changing the name of that short piece of Prosperity Church made more sense than renaming Prosperity Church for miles, she said. You affect fewer businesses, fewer property owners. If you have two Prosperity Church roads ... it really sets up a condition whereby emergency services could have trouble finding the location.
City officials said they met with business owners and added signs to help customers find the plaza during the heaviest phases of construction.
I would have thought that would have had some impact on the business owners concerns, said city Councilman Greg Phipps, who represents District 4 and sits on the councils transportation and planning committee.
The cost of change
