    Giansiracusa takes the final step

    - August 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Son of the Scray: Jenny and Joe Giansiracusa made several interstate trips a year to watch Daniel, who is retiring at 32. Photo: Getty Images

Jenny and Joe Giansiracusa were leaving Etihad Stadium last weekend when the vastness of their football journey flashed before their eyes.

"There was a little boy sobbing, his Mum and Dad trying to console him, and he was just devastated," Jenny says of a young Western Bulldogs fan, distraught after another loss, pleading for the Sydney theme song to stop. "It reminded us so much of Daniel."

Way back at the beginning, little Daniel Giansiracusa wore a Hawthorn jumper and relentlessly dragged his father into an Altona cul-de-sac of modest brick veneers, in front of the house where his parents still live, a football under a slender arm, a child's fantasies swimming around his head. The gap between the light pole and a nature strip tree was the goals, and he'd commentate every kick, dreaming of where it might take him. "He knew all these stats," Joe says, "and he had dialogue."

Sometimes the neighbours got vocal too. "We'd get a phone call saying he'd knocked another shrub over," Jenny laughs.

Football consumed him then as it still does, and his parents went along for the ride. "He made me sew a flag the size of a table, brown and yellow squares, so big he couldn't lift it," Jenny says. From the very back of the top deck at Waverley he hauled it skyward, father clinging to son and flag lest they both be blown away.

"And they lost," Jenny says, "and he was just devastated."

There will be sadness on Sunday, too, as a greying 32-year-old husband and father of two does the only thing that little boy in a quiet Altona street could imagine - for the last time. Jenny and Joe know their journey will end too, and they give thanks for every step.

Within the space of two generations, their son has added an unforeseen shimmy to the family lineage. Joe Giansiracusa's father left Sicily in 1932 and settled in Balranald aged 17. He and his brothers were market gardeners; sport - even Olympic games and world events - didn't register with them. "They just weren't interested."

'Sick' thieves pulled heads off chickens at Tunbridge Wells…

    - August 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

THIEVES ransacked at least 22 sheds at the busiest allotments in Tunbridge Wells and left a trail of destruction which included six decapitated chickens.

It is believed they struck at Hawkenbury Allotments, off Halls Hole Road, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

They used bolt-cutters to break open the padlocked gate and drove their vehicle on site.

Then they raided scores of sheds, taking everything from lawnmowers and cans of diesel to rotavators and a workbench, and killed the chickens and even damaged a giant pumpkin.

Police spent hours on Saturday gathering information and collecting forensic evidence while allotment holders began counting the cost.

Janet Sturgis, chairman of Hawkenbury Allotment Holders' Association, told the Courier: "We have been in existence since 1895 and we have never had anything like this.

"It is sickening. It's the psychological feeling of being invaded. To do that to the hens they must be really horrible people.

"They were so unpleasant, they went into sheds and just pulled everything to the ground. Someone was growing a giant pumpkin for the association's autumn show on Saturday and they put the bolt cutter prongs into it. It was ruined.

"They left things in such a mess, so you knew they had been. They stole all the diesel for the mowers."

St. Vincent puts focus on cancer patients with $4.3 million renovation project

    - August 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Suffering from colon cancer, 22-year-old Craig Canape spent at least 74 days in Room 370, a bleak and tired-looking room on the third floor of Fortin Tower at St. Vincent Healthcare.

Despite its glum and antiquated look and feel, the room became a home away from home for Craigs parents, Tom and Susan Canape of Laurel. It was filled with heart. They decorated the room with family and school photos and entertained Craigs friends there routinely, even hosting dinners.

Staff brought in a refrigerator, even a big-screen TV anything to make it better.

At night, Tom transformed a cubbyhole-sized waiting room nearby into a makeshift bedroom to be near his son.

We just adapted to what we had, Tom said. It was home, and we got to be with him. There could be improvements, sure, but its hard to knock it because of the excellent care we received.

Craig, often accompanied by friends and family, would escape his dismal room to visit fourth floor where the surroundings were more pleasant and appealing. Fourth floor houses the nursery and sports a new, modern, 21st century look.

You can tell third floor is probably the last floor on the list to be renovated, said Susan with a smile. Its definitely original.

All of that is about to change as St. Vincent Healthcare prepares to embark on a $4.3 million renovation of the floor so that in the future families will be surrounded by a more pleasant, peaceful environment in addition to receiving quality medical attention.

It was in Room 370 that Craig Canape, a former football and basketball player for the Laurel Locomotives, lived out his final hours.

Tom recalls the precise moment his son died 7:15 a.m., May 18, 2013.
