Visible demolition of the Clarion Hotel high-rise eyesore in South Toledo should begin early next week just in time to help stage the nearby former Southwyck mall property for sale, city officials say.
Bill Burkett, commissioner of economic and business development, said the deconstruction of the 10-story building could not begin until the contractor finished eliminating contaminants everything from asbestos insulation to mercury in the thermostats and batteries in the exit signs.
The final step, he said, was to remove water from the basement that was used to store swimming pool chemicals.
Theyre going to start on the one-story areas the pool, banquet room, carport so they can get access to the remaining tower from the outside, Mr. Burkett said. I think itll take another four weeks to get it sorted out and bring everything to the ground.
Mayor D. Michael Collins announced the beginning of demolition on July 7, and his staff said the building would likely start to disappear in a month, a deadline that passed three weeks ago. The delay has prompted impatience on the part of council members who asked for an update from the administration last week.
The building at 2340 S. Reynolds Rd. has stood empty since 2009 when previous owners Toledo Hotel Investment Group LLC defaulted on $2 million in loans. The hotel has since caught fire, been broken into, vandalized, and lived in illegally.
Toledo City Council voted unanimously June 17 to approve a $434,000 bid by Homrich Inc. of Carleton, Mich., to tear the building down.
City Council set aside $350,000 from the capital improvements fund and obtained a $200,000 Brownfields grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to pay for the demolition.

Clarion demolition set to begin
Demolition work has begun again on a doomed Gateshead council estate that is to be razed to the ground.
In 2011 Gateshead Council announced it would spend 11m knocking down 175 houses at Bleech Green in Blaydon.
But three weeks ago The Chronicle found that the last remaining residents were still living amid the boarded up and sometimes burnt out ghost town.
Those few owner-occupiers said they felt they were being forced out, with Gateshead Council keen to clear the entire area, so potential house builders have a clean slate to begin again.
I dont agree with anything thats happened, said retired mechanic John Armstrong, 61, who moved into the home he owns on Birch Road 14 years ago.
Im one of the few who actually owned their house of the 176 the council said had to come down I think there was only 16 of us.
When you own your own home and the land it sits on you think you are safe. But basically I feel Ive been forced to move.
A spokesman for Gateshead Council said it plans to raze all of the houses and then grass the area, so potential developers have an empty site to build on.
A first stage of demolition saw homes taken down on Elm Road some time ago, with the area left empty.
The spokesman said that the next phase of demolition could begin before the end of August - with engineers now having moved in to salvage roof tiles, and begin the process of levelling the site.

Acoustics generally take a back seat to aesthetic considerations for homes. And yet, when sound reverberations distort conversation, or when noise leaks in from external sources (or out from blasting home theater speakers) acoustics suddenly becomes a serious concern.
However, an increasing number of residential architects (and individual home owners) have engaged our services to prevent or ameliorate acoustic intrusion. Some examples of the top new residential project that illustrate the point.
Morro du Chapeu Residence How do you keep your pool house from reverberating like a gymnasium without draping the walls and windows with heavy curtains? For the owners of a luxurious villa set on one of Brazils most breathtaking landscapes, the views and pastoral silence were priceless. A long expanse of windows surrounding the infinite lap pool draw attention to the spectacular mountain views. However, the enclosed pool and spa area includes a gym, Jacuzzi and wet bar, surrounded by three walls of double height windows and a movable glass sealing system to maintain interior warmth in the cool evenings. All these elements presented serious sound reverberation issues. Clearsorber Foil, an innovative professional recording studio acoustic treatment, was engaged to eliminate these echos. The pioneering translucent plastic sheets absorb medium and high frequency reverberation to resolve sonic reflections. Each window, (including a skylight grid of 20 individual panels) was custom fitted with the acoustical treatment. Full transparency insures unimpeded views and, conversations free from typical pool house reverberation.
Penna Home Theater Can you isolate a home theater within a luxurious open format apartment without compromising its expansive environment? WSDGs solution was to engage retractable, floor-to-ceiling walls. The resulting installation maintains the homes loft-like, kitchen/ dining/living room atmosphere and delivers a fully enclosed, 377 sq. home theater. Recessed lighting is set into a custom-recording studio-style, acoustic ceiling cloud, designed to absorb sound reflections and aid in tuning the room for optimal acoustic integrity. Two sets of customized, 3-section, telescoping acoustic walls ride out from their nesting units on tracks embedded in the ceiling and floor to isolate the theater from the rest of the apartment. Acoustical fabric absorption treatments were added to the interior of the sliding panels; handsome wooden diffusion treatments were fixed to their exterior sides, and a QRD diffusor was applied to the rear door.
Ribeiro Home Theater Preparing to move to a palatial new penthouse, this client was fully aware of the need for high-level technology and meticulous acoustic treatments to achieve exceptional sound AND eliminate noise leaking into (or out of) his home. To eliminate sound leakage to the lower level WSDG built a floating floor over vibration isolators, which greatly minimize the transmission of noise from the subwoofers to the residential section of the apartment. Additionally, cuts were made in the floor in front of the Adam Sub24 subwoofers to compensate for their vibration. Acoustics were further enhanced by a perforated acoustic treatment, mounted at a precisely calibrated distance from the slab on a wooden-slat-dressed ceiling for superior sound absorption.
