Happy Handyman: Rinz EZ the smartest way to clean your windows

    - August 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A while back, I had a customer come in and she was in an area of the store that had the commercial window-cleaning supplies.

We carry that because we have a few window washers in the area. She was loading up all this equipment and so I asked her about her company. She then told me she was just getting supplies to clean her windows at her home.

I asked her if she had ever heard of Rinz EZ? Rinz EZ is the smartest way to clean your windows.

You simply put a package of Rinz EZ soap in the applicator and add water and stir. Then you attach it to your hose and start cleaning the windows.

You want to do this in the cool of the morning because the Rinz EZ sheets off cleanly to leave you a spot-free window.

If the glass is hot, the Rinz EZ will dry too quickly. You can easily do 16 windows in 30 minutes. You can even reach the second-story windows from the ground with the Rinz EZ applicator. No more getting on a ladder.

When I had a boat and a lake house, I always cleaned the boat and wet jets with the left over Rinz EZ. You can wash your car too, its very versatile. After I showed my customer the Rinz EZ she put back all the commercial stuff and walked out with one bag and a much easier job in mind.

    Now to the email

Question: Hey Johnnie! I have really been trying to be as energy conscious as I can. I know one time you talked about a insulation that goes in the wall switch. What was the name, so that I know what to ask for at my local hardware store?

Answer: They are called MD Dual Purpose Light Switch Sealers. You remove the plate and put the sealer over the switch and then put back on the switch plate. Its just that easy. If you think that this is a waste of time, just put your hand over your switch plate, and then again after installing a switch sealer.

Letter: Lukins taking steps to curtail water use

    - August 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Publishers note: The following letter was sent to Lukins Brothers Water Company customers on Aug. 28. It is a similar message other water districts in the Lake Tahoe Basin are sending to customers. Dear Customers,

Lukins Brothers Water Company, Inc. would like to thank you for your continued efforts in conserving water. All of your voluntary efforts have contributed to an overall reduction in water consumption of 6 percent between June/July 2013 and June/July 2014. In order to help manage limited resources during current drought conditions, the California Public Utilities Commission has ordered Lukins Brothers Water Company Inc. to notify its customers of the State Water Resources Control Boards (State Board) recent adoption of emergency regulations for statewide urban water conservation, including mandatory restrictions and potential fines for violations of the State Boards regulations. Your continued cooperation and support is needed to ensure reliable supplies of water for your comfort and necessary use.

The State Board has determined that the following water use activities by Lukins Brothers Water Company customers are not allowed:

    1. Watering outdoor landscapes in a way that causes water to runoff onto adjacent property, non-irrigated areas, private and public walkways, roadways, parking lots, or structures.

    2. Washing a vehicle with a hose without a shut-off nozzle or other device that will immediately stop the flow of water when not in use.

    3. Using drinking water to wash driveways and sidewalks.

    4. Using drinking water in a fountain or other decorative water feature, except where the water is recirculated.

Violation of any of these four prohibited or restricted water use activities may be punished by a fine of up to $500 for each day in which the violation occurs.

Please note that such fines are a last resort and that they may be assessed only by local law enforcement authorities. Lukins Brothers Water Company would like to thank its customers who have voluntarily conserved water up to this point and asks that you continue these efforts and comply with the State Boards new restrictions on outdoor water use.

In addition to the four prohibited activities listed above, the State Boards new regulations require Lukins Brothers Water Company to inform their customers that they must limit outdoor irrigation of ornamental landscapes or turf with drinking water to no more than two days per week. Lukins Brothers Water Company amended watering schedule and guidelines is as follows:

LETTER: Saanich confused about its trees

    - August 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Re: Tree tally leads to new rules (News, July 9)

Saanichs tree removal restrictions act against human life while not achieving the ends that environmentalist politicians want.

For example, why is Western red cedar protected but Himalayan cedar not? (Using the list in your August 22, 2014 issue. Western red cedar, a member of the Cypress/Juniper family, is common here whereas Himalayan cedar, in the Larch branch of the Pine family, is not. (Himalayan cedar is a large tree that looks like Western hemlock from a distance, its closely related to Lebanon cedar.)

Having to get a permit especially burdens elderly and poor people struggling to stay in their homes while at risk of a tree puncturing their roof in a wet winter night.

Saanichs restrictions work against planting trees near houses, because they will be a future burden to the property owner including the cost of necessary removal for either the planting property owner or a subsequent owner who may not want to pay as much due to assuming that cost.

Saanichs restrictions smell like another do-gooder scheme by people who have the negative view of humans that comes from Marxist teachings. They act as though theyve never looked outside and seen that people plant trees which grow, and that many break apart due structural deficiency or rot, or die due to disease or old age. (Indeed, it is known in Saanich that one type of tree breaks in calm summer heat.)

Meanwhile Saanichs bureaucracy cant even get tree selection right theyve planted a large species in narrow strips of grass along the recently rebuilt part of Admirals Road.

Voters should ask questions this fall.
