WOODRIDGE The Woodridge Village Board approved several measures on Thursday night, including an expanded road reconstruction project, a bid for ash tree removal and an addition to the Union Pointe Business Park:
1. Road project needs more funding
A change order to increase the amount of funds budgeted for a road reconstruction in Woodridge was approved by the village board Thursday night.
The board approved an additional expenditure not to exceed $410,000 for the road project, which involves Hickory Court, Autumn Drive and Two Paths Drive in the Mendingwall subdivision.
During construction, contractor James D. Fiala Paving Company Inc. discovered more extensive work was required to the roads to prevent premature deterioration, according to a news release from the village.
The adjusted project cost is an estimated $1.45 million. The roadwork continues to progress and is expected to be complete by late September, according to the village.
2. Bid for ash tree removal accepted
Also Thursday, the village awarded a bid from D. Ryan Tree and Landscape Services to remove ash trees and stumps on parkways and other village-owned property. The trees have been deemed unsalvageable due to the emerald ash borer infestation.
While the total cost of the project could change based on the number and size of trees removed, the estimated cost is $195,150.
Five bids were received for the project, with the second lowest bid at $255,517.

Citing their concerns over regulating what residents can and cant do in their front and back yards, Rolling Meadows City Council members Tuesday (Aug. 19) voted 4-2 not to move forward in developing a tree removal regulation.
During the councils committee of the whole meeting at city hall, and with a few residents from the Fairfax Avenue area in attendance, public works Director Fred Vogt reviewed many tree removal regulations in place in other cities.

JUST weeks ago a giant tree crashed through their garden fence, narrowly missing motorists on a nearby road.
After it fell, experts deemed the 30ft diseased oak too dangerous to leave as it was and cut it down to a four-metre tall leafless stump.
But Nicky and Keith Smith are frightened that it could fall again as they have been told it must stay in their garden as it is still under a tree preservation order (TPO) which has been in place since 1974.
The order means the couple from Canterbury Avenue, Sholing, must ask permission from Southampton City Council before any work is carried out on the 200-year-old tree, despite it having bracket fungi, which can decay and weaken trees from the inside.
Nicky, 46, a driver and mum-of-three, said: Im worried that the rest of it will come down and hurt someone as behind my fence is a road and a pavement.
I think its ridiculous. I assumed they were going to take the rest down to just a small stump but they have left the damaged part of the tree and a big chunk above.
They said thats what they count as safe because there are no leaves on it so it wont catch in the wind but it was a beautiful day when it fell so you cant say that its not going to happen again.
I want them to reduce the bill and take the preservation order off so we can get rid of it properly.
The couple were charged 2,617 for the workers to come out and clear the leaves and smaller branches, which they say is too much.
The council said the tree preservation order is still in place because the remaining pollard a tree with all its leaves and dead branches removed is still alive.

Jenny and Joe Giansiracusa were leaving Etihad Stadium last weekend when the vastness of their football journey flashed before their eyes.
"There was a little boy sobbing, his Mum and Dad trying to console him, and he was just devastated," Jenny says of a young Western Bulldogs fan, distraught after another loss, pleading for the Sydney theme song to stop. "It reminded us so much of Daniel."
Way back at the beginning, little Daniel Giansiracusa wore a Hawthorn jumper and relentlessly dragged his father into an Altona cul-de-sac of modest brick veneers, in front of the house where his parents still live, a football under a slender arm, a child's fantasies swimming around his head. The gap between the light pole and a nature strip tree was the goals, and he'd commentate every kick, dreaming of where it might take him. "He knew all these stats," Joe says, "and he had dialogue."
Sometimes the neighbours got vocal too. "We'd get a phone call saying he'd knocked another shrub over," Jenny laughs.
Football consumed him then as it still does, and his parents went along for the ride. "He made me sew a flag the size of a table, brown and yellow squares, so big he couldn't lift it," Jenny says. From the very back of the top deck at Waverley he hauled it skyward, father clinging to son and flag lest they both be blown away.
"And they lost," Jenny says, "and he was just devastated."
There will be sadness on Sunday, too, as a greying 32-year-old husband and father of two does the only thing that little boy in a quiet Altona street could imagine - for the last time. Jenny and Joe know their journey will end too, and they give thanks for every step.
Within the space of two generations, their son has added an unforeseen shimmy to the family lineage. Joe Giansiracusa's father left Sicily in 1932 and settled in Balranald aged 17. He and his brothers were market gardeners; sport - even Olympic games and world events - didn't register with them. "They just weren't interested."
Jenny's brothers played local footy for Landsborough in between working the farm, three generations tending Wimmera sheep, cattle and crops. "I was never sporty. My sporting interest started with Daniel in the under-10s."

Joni Bettge's sprinkler system sprayed fine water droplets onto her lawn, catching rainbows of light in morning sun.
Bettge, who lives in the McKay Landing neighborhood, has already done a lot to her home in order to make it energy- and water-efficient. On a cool Monday morning, she was tackling the efficiency of her outdoor sprinkler system. She was worried it was spraying too much water onto her sidewalk and not enough on her grass and tree-lined landscaping.
Bettge called in an expert from the Center for ReSource Conservation, or CRC, a nonprofit that works with cities, including Broomfield, to conduct outdoor water audits. The program provides the free audits to residents who want to reduce their usage when they water their lawns.
Tyler Kesler, a water programs manager at CRC, said water conservation is a big deal for residents who want to save money and resources, especially in years when Colorado experiences drought restrictions.
Outdoor irrigation accounts for about 50 percent of residential water use each year, and up to 25 percent of outdoor water use is wasted as runoff, according to CRC.
Broomfield in 2011 adopted a water use plan that encourages families to cut water usage by 10 percent, said Broomfield Environmental Services superintendent Kathy Schnoor.
The plan does not list specific gallon or volume reduction goals, but aims to reduce water usage by reusing water in Broomfield parks, reaching out to neighborhoods that use a large amount of water and doing outreach campaigns in public places, such as Broomfield Days, she said.
"Water is a valuable resource, and it's limited," Schnoor said. "We should use it as wisely as possible, not just because of conservation, but because it's the right thing to do."
Broomfield raised water rates in early 2013, when residents saw their first water rate increase since 2008. Average households saw a 7 percent increase in water rates, plus a $2 per month fee to fund the state's new water quality regulations set to go into effect in 2018.
The residential flat monthly water service charge went from $8.74 to $9.35 per dwelling unit, and the charge for water use per 1,000 gallons went from $2.80 to $3.

Eight years after the first bottle of wine was uncorked and poured for tasting room visitors at Winonas Garvin Heights Vineyards, owners Marvin and Linda Seppanen are constructing an addition to the building.
Below ground, the winery will triple in size. But the half-million dollar project wont be just a larger tasting room. For the past year the couple, along with their daughter Christine Seppanen and her husband, have been planning an event center with space for medium-size weddings of 100 or so guests, Marvin said.
On Tuesday, the Seppanens grapes rustled in the wind, seemingly undisturbed by the sound of hammering and the rhythmic pulse of the air compressor. Construction crews were hard at work laying floorboards for the event center, and cement walls stood guard over a sand floor in the lower level.
The project, which began in mid-July, will be completed sometime this fall theyre not sure precisely which day.
You know how that goes, Linda said, laughing.
Marvin, an engineering consultant, and Linda, who retired from teaching nursing at Winona State University this year, have been growing grapes at their location above Garvin Heights for 25 years. They made wine for family and friends until they reached the 200-gallon benchmark that required them to get a license.
Their four acres of grapes are augmented by grapes from at least two other growers, Marvin said, so theyre not restricted by the amount of land they have. The winery currently offers about 20 different wines to its customers.
Of course, fall is wine-making season, and theyll start making wine the first week of September in the current space. Once next year rolls around, they hope to increase production with the extra space the addition will afford.
Linda said she looks forward to offering more events in the new space. Shed like to offer classes like how to pair wine with cheese, and her daughter Christine plans to offer wine and yoga classes.
Besides that, the addition will allow the Seppanens to continue to offer their tasting room to visitors without interruption there will be a separate entrance for the event center.

Chicago The Tigers on Friday made room for Evan Reeds addition to the active roster by dropping another right-handed reliever, Jose Ortega, who was designated for assignment.
The Tigers likely will outright Ortega to their minor-league system should he clear waivers. They could also trade him within a 10-day period. Ortega, 25, has had stints with the Tigers during the past three seasons, spanning 14 games.
He had been pitching at Triple A Toledo, where he was 2-2, with a 3.70 earned-run average in 45 games. He had 45 strikeouts in 56 innings, but he had also walked 36 batters, accounting for a dark 1.52 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning).
Reed, 28, was with the Tigers earlier this season and in his last 10 games at Toledo had a 1.93 ERA, with 16 strikeouts and a single walk in 14 innings. Earlier this month, sexual assault charges against Reed, stemming from a March incident, were dropped by a Wayne County District Court judge.
The Tigers were preparing Friday for a night game against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. They are scheduled to play a day-night doubleheader Saturday, when another Toledo pitcher, left-handed starter Kyle Ryan, is scheduled to join the team. The Tigers will make a 40-man roster announcement ahead of Saturdays first game as they clear space for Ryan.
Showers and thunderstorms were forecasted for late Friday afternoon in Chicago, extending into early evening Saturday.
