21 staff to go as SWEK announce swathe of cuts

Twenty one Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley staff positions will be cut and a swathe of services will be cut or closed, including the Wyndham Childcare Centre if its Budget is passed at Tuesday's special meeting.

Twelve staff members will be told to leave their positions while a further nine vacant positions will not be filled.

Other services on the chopping block include pre-cyclone clean-ups while there will be a scaling back of cumbungi management, and maintenance in areas such as lawn-mowing and ranger functions.

The Shire will also "no longer have a specific focus on providing assistance to sporting clubs or the provision of recreation services to Wyndham".

Shire president John Moulden announced the potential changes in a media statement released this morning, and said the putting together the "tight budget" had required a lot of consideration and deliberation by all councillors and executive management.

In the statement, he said the reductions had become necessary as a result of reductions in Federal Government Financial Assistance Grants and major Economic Development Stimulus Grants.

"The tight budget has meant councillors have had to make tough decisions about what services the Shire can and cannot provide and where savings can be made, to ensure the future sustainability of the Shire," Mr Moulden said.

Last month, Shire chief executive Gary Gaffney told The Kimberley Echo tough financial decisions would have to be made to balance the books on the back of fewer Commonwealth grants and costly flood damage.

A meeting for Shire employees was scheduled for this morning to discuss possible impacts on staff but Mr Gaffney is understood to be on holiday, with director of infrastructure Kevin Hannagan filling in as interim chief executive.

BAY CITY, MI Mowing his lawn in the nude has cost a 62-year-old Bay City man several hundred dollars in fines and some probation time.

Bay County District Judge Dawn A. Klida on Wednesday, Aug. 27, gaveBobby O. Blodgetta one-year delayed sentence, during which time he'll be supervised by the Bay County Probation Department. He is also to pay $785 in fines and costs and must be assessed by staff at Saginaw Psychological Services and follow their recommendations.

Blodgett is also not to work in any capacity with children or vulnerable adults, unless such work is approved by the court.

Blodgett in July pleadedno contestto indecent exposure, the only charge he faced. The count is punishable by up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine.

A no contest plea is not an admission guilt but is treated as such for the purposes of sentencing. Klida reliedon police reports to enter a conviction on the record.

According to thosereports, officers on the evening ofWednesday, May 21, responded to Blodgett's home in the 300 block of McDonald Street after Bay County Central Dispatch received a call of himmowing his lawn naked. The caller, 40-year-old Jason S. Linton, told dispatchers he yelled at Blodgett to put some clothes on, and that Blodgett had done so, police reports show.

Linton told an officer that he and his teenage son were visiting his mother-in-law in the neighborhood and that they were in her back yard when they heard a lawnmower start up.

"Then the guy came walking out and started cutting his lawn in the nude," Linton said. "I yelled at him and told him that he needed to put some clothing on."

Linton said that though there is a privacy fence separating the yards, there are gaps in it that one can see through.

Linton's mother-in-law, Nancy M. Mercier, told the officer that a similar incident happened the week beforehand when Blodgett mowed his lawn wearing only lady's stockings.

Dave Nelson leads the way up to a waterfall located in front of his office off of Day Mt. Spokane Road. He points out how the design of the waterfall and water flow in turn changes the sound the water makes as it cascades down over the rocks, dropping into a deep pool before spilling further down into a large Koi sanctuary below.

As he continues to climb the steps beside the waterfall, he focuses on how the design of the water feature shifts the sound at each change in the arrangement of the rocks, how the water gurgles and gets quieter the farther up he climbs.

Nelson, co-owner of Mead-based Land Expressions, a landscape architecture business he started with his wife Kerry Nelson in 1987, says he and the companys designers use sound to mute undesirable noise, as well as soothe the soul, on projects they build. Changing the height, flow, or the surface of the rocks can create desirable sounds screening traffic noise or other intrusive sounds.

Land Expressions employs 13 full-time landscape architects and designers, in its Spokane office located at 5615 E. Day Mt. Spokane Road in Mead, and another 30 to 40 people who work in the field in an on-site nursery and landscape area or as craftsmen and construction managers.

Nelson says the company uses site design and the integration of art and science to create and build water features and applies that mindset on its construction projects.

The elder Nelson received several national awards for beautification of Northwest highways and parks as the owner of Nelson Landscape.

Dave Nelson is building on that legacy here with projects such as the Spokane City Plaza and Huntington Park, which was a joint project of Avista Corp. and the city of Spokane. Avista paid to develop and build the plaza and park on land the city owns near City Hall and gifted it to the city. Land Expressions was the landscape architect and lead contractor on the project. Nelson says it was necessary to remove a parking lot behind City Hall to make that area a connecting point between Riverfront Park and Huntington Park on the Spokane River.

The park includes a pair of waterfall fountains, a fire feature sculpture, a scenic overlook for both able and disabled visitors, more than three acres of green space, and a series of levels connected by steps, leading down to a close-up view of the falls. The overall effect is modern and very geometric, he says.

Remember when Texas A&M was a flash in the pan and wouldn't have staying power in the SEC West after quarterback Johnny Manziel moved on early to the NFL?

Yeah, about that.

Manziel's replacement, sophomore Kenny Hill, was phenomenal in his debut as the Aggies' starting quarterback, completing 44 of 60 passes for 511 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-28 rout over No. 9 South Carolina on the road in a hostile environment in Columbia, South Carolina. The 511 yards and 60 passing attempts were both school records.

The performance vaulted Hill, who was a virtual unknown prior to Thursday night, right into the early-season conversation for the Heisman Trophy, according to Todd Fuhrman of Fox Sports 1.

It was a statement performance not just by Hill, but by head coach Kevin Sumlinwho proved that, even without the most dynamic college football player in recent history, his system works at an elite level.

Over the last six years, covering stints as the head coach of Texas A&M and Houston, Sumlin's offenses have finished no worse than 11th in the country in total offense. The only reason Sumlin's Houston offense finished in "lowly" 11th in 2010 was because quarterback Case Keenum was lost for the season after three games and David Piland had to step in on the fly.

Sumlin came out to prove a point, and he did it.

Sumlin doesn't fit quarterbacks to his system, he fits his system to quarterbacks. When he was at Houston, Keenum lit up opposing defenses in an offense that resembled the Air Raid. With Manziel at Texas A&M, it was a nice blend of Air Raid, zone read and Manziel's improvisational skills. Speaking of, a certain someone took notice of Hill's performance tonight as well.

Eileen's supervisor Jessica Altman explains, "Over the past several years, due to a lot of hard work within our company and our wonderful clients, Hatchett has grown. Originally from Manassas, VA, Eileen graduated from The University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design, and Planning in 2014 with a degree in Interior Design. Throughout college she was an active student member of the IIDA Mid-America Chapter, participating in events such as Color Couture and Student Mentoring Week. As part of her course work, she has held multiple internships with interior design firms in the DC Metro area.

Eileen is also a dancer and feels this experience strongly influences her designs. In her words, "I have danced since the age of three and taught for a few years during college. One of my college professors told me to use my dance background and look at space planning as if I'm choreographing a dance. It helped me to look at space in a new way. It seems strange, but looking at space planning as if it were a dance has helped me find solutions to design problems I may never have thought possible."

Care home bosses and a gardener were fined after a bed was set alight in a garden bonfire.

Smoke billowed over homes in Gosforth, Newcastle, when a care homes gardener set fire to a bed base, cushions and a chest of drawers in an apparent controlled fire at Abbeyfield Care Home based at Castle Farm Road.

Pottery, metal, tin-foil, wiring, electrical flex, cloth and glass tubing with potentially toxic parts were also found to have been flung on the flames when Newcastle City Council officers visited days later.

The Abbeyfield Newcastle Society was fined 1,600 following a hearing by the citys JPs on Friday, August 15 for disposing of controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution at the home in October.

They were also asked to pay 284 and a 160 victim surcharge.

The homes gardener Simon Renton, 42, of Cochrane Terrace, Newcastle, was ordered to pay a 270 fine, a 27 victim surcharge and 282 costs.

The Abbeyfield Newcastle Society and Mr Renton pleaded guilty at the hearing.

An Abbeyfield Society spokesperson, said: We are concerned to hear about this situation as we expect all our staff and volunteers to adhere to correct waste disposal techniques across all our properties.

Abbeyfield prides itself on its community links and takes very seriously anything that could jeopardise our valuable work in supporting and caring for older people.
