Spokane-area landscape architect follows in fathers footsteps

    - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dave Nelson leads the way up to a waterfall located in front of his office off of Day Mt. Spokane Road. He points out how the design of the waterfall and water flow in turn changes the sound the water makes as it cascades down over the rocks, dropping into a deep pool before spilling further down into a large Koi sanctuary below.

Listen, Nelson says. This deep drop off deepens the sound.

As he continues to climb the steps beside the waterfall, he focuses on how the design of the water feature shifts the sound at each change in the arrangement of the rocks, how the water gurgles and gets quieter the farther up he climbs.

Nelson, co-owner of Mead-based Land Expressions, a landscape architecture business he started with his wife Kerry Nelson in 1987, says he and the companys designers use sound to mute undesirable noise, as well as soothe the soul, on projects they build. Changing the height, flow, or the surface of the rocks can create desirable sounds screening traffic noise or other intrusive sounds.

Land Expressions employs 13 full-time landscape architects and designers, in its Spokane office located at 5615 E. Day Mt. Spokane Road in Mead, and another 30 to 40 people who work in the field in an on-site nursery and landscape area or as craftsmen and construction managers.

Nelson says the company uses site design and the integration of art and science to create and build water features and applies that mindset on its construction projects.

We embrace sustainability and responsible design. Our award-winning team of landscape architects specializes in the design (and construction) of aquatic environments, aesthetic water amenities, and restoration projects, he says. The company does a lot of work at health care facilities and corporate campuses, and also stays busy with commercial, retail, and residential projects, he says.

Nelson grew up in Spokane around the landscape business. His father, Duane Nelson, owned Nelson Landscape for many years, a company that helped build Riverfront Park and improve Canada Island during Expo 74, he says. The elder Nelson received several national awards for beautification of Northwest highways and parks as the owner of Nelson Landscape.

Dave Nelson is building on that legacy here with projects such as the Spokane City Plaza and Huntington Park, which was a joint project of Avista Corp. and the city of Spokane. Avista paid to develop and build the plaza and park on land the city owns near City Hall and gifted it to the city. Land Expressions was the landscape architect and lead contractor on the project. Nelson says it was necessary to remove a parking lot behind City Hall to make that area a connecting point between Riverfront Park and Huntington Park on the Spokane River.

The park includes a pair of waterfall fountains, a fire feature sculpture, a scenic overlook for both able and disabled visitors, more than three acres of green space, and a series of levels connected by steps, leading down to a close-up view of the falls. The overall effect is modern and very geometric, he says.

Opening Night Demolition Shows Kevin Sumlin More Valuable Than Johnny Manziel

    - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rainier Ehrhardt/Associated Press Texas A&M QB Kenny Hill

    Johnny who?

Remember when Texas A&M was a flash in the pan and wouldn't have staying power in the SEC West after quarterback Johnny Manziel moved on early to the NFL?

    Yeah, about that.

Manziel's replacement, sophomore Kenny Hill, was phenomenal in his debut as the Aggies' starting quarterback, completing 44 of 60 passes for 511 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-28 rout over No. 9 South Carolina on the road in a hostile environment in Columbia, South Carolina. The 511 yards and 60 passing attempts were both school records.

The performance vaulted Hill, who was a virtual unknown prior to Thursday night, right into the early-season conversation for the Heisman Trophy, according to Todd Fuhrman of Fox Sports 1.

It was a statement performance not just by Hill, but by head coach Kevin Sumlinwho proved that, even without the most dynamic college football player in recent history, his system works at an elite level.

Over the last six years, covering stints as the head coach of Texas A&M and Houston, Sumlin's offenses have finished no worse than 11th in the country in total offense. The only reason Sumlin's Houston offense finished in "lowly" 11th in 2010 was because quarterback Case Keenum was lost for the season after three games and David Piland had to step in on the fly.

Sumlin came out to prove a point, and he did it.

Sumlin doesn't fit quarterbacks to his system, he fits his system to quarterbacks. When he was at Houston, Keenum lit up opposing defenses in an offense that resembled the Air Raid. With Manziel at Texas A&M, it was a nice blend of Air Raid, zone read and Manziel's improvisational skills. Speaking of, a certain someone took notice of Hill's performance tonight as well.

Hatchett Design Remodel Hires New Interior Designer, Eileen Byrne.

    - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Newport News, VA (PRWEB) August 28, 2014

Hatchett Design Remodel welcomes Eileen Byrne as the newest member of the Hatchett design team. Having recently added to their sales staff, Hatchett decided it was time to add a new designer as well. Eileen's supervisor Jessica Altman explains, "Over the past several years, due to a lot of hard work within our company and our wonderful clients, Hatchett has grown. Eileen is a great fit for our team, and we are confident that she will help Hatchett continue to grow."

Originally from Manassas, VA, Eileen graduated from The University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design, and Planning in 2014 with a degree in Interior Design. Throughout college she was an active student member of the IIDA Mid-America Chapter, participating in events such as Color Couture and Student Mentoring Week. As part of her course work, she has held multiple internships with interior design firms in the DC Metro area.

Eileen is also a dancer and feels this experience strongly influences her designs. In her words, "I have danced since the age of three and taught for a few years during college. One of my college professors told me to use my dance background and look at space planning as if I'm choreographing a dance. It helped me to look at space in a new way. It seems strange, but looking at space planning as if it were a dance has helped me find solutions to design problems I may never have thought possible."

Hatchett Designer Jessica Altman adds, "Eileen brings a great attitude, confidence and a willingness to learn. Our industry changes on a daily basis, so the desire to learn is invaluable. We think she will be a wonderful asset to our clients, because she is very creative and will work hard to make sure the client's wants and needs are met."

Eileen had many options of where to begin her design career. She chose Hatchett Design Remodel, because they are a family. Eileen explains, "I was always told that the best interviews are the ones that resemble a friendly conversation more than a Q & A session, and thats exactly how I felt when I interviewed here. Its such a great group of people and the fact that Hatchett is a family business only added to the appeal. I wanted to work somewhere where my co-workers werent just going to be co-workers but could become a sort of 'work family', and thats exactly what I found at Hatchett."

About Hatchett Design Remodel Hatchett Design Remodel was founded in 1960 with a vision to provide exceptional construction services to Southeastern Virginia. Originally a siding and roofing company, Hatchett has evolved into a full service Design-Build Firm providing Kitchen Remodeling, Bath Remodeling, Additions and Sunroom services from the design process through construction for homeowners in the Hampton Roads area.

    Home warranties | Angies List

    - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A home warranty is often a feature in the sale of a home. In that scenario, the seller typically pays a few hundred dollars for a one-year warranty covering the home's major fixtures such as the furnace, water heater and kitchen appliances. This gives the buyer some protection during that first year of ownership knowing that if something major breaks down it will be covered. Many homeowners choose to continue paying an annual premium rather than risk bearing the full replacement cost of a major item.

Although technically not insurance, warranties are very similar in that the homeowner is paying an up-front fee to protect against a potentially huge replacement cost. If nothing breaks during the coverage period, the customer may in hindsight feel the fee was a waste of money, but that's what managing risk is all about. Are you financially prepared to replace major components as they are needed, or would you rather pay a set amount per year whether something breaks or not?

One important difference between insurance and a warranty is that the homeowner must go through the warranty company to arrange for service, and this can be another point where a customer might be dissatisfied. Home warranty companies establish relationships with service providers in the areas for which they provide coverage. So whether customers are satisfied with the warranty company depends in large part on whether they are satisfied with the repairmen whom the warranty company has hired.

Even though home warranties aren't considered insurance, the companies that sell them are typically regulated by each state's department of insurance. According to the Service Contract Industry Council, 32 states require home warranty companies to register or obtain a license with that state's department of insurance. This state agency is responsible for licensing the entity, examines the company for compliance of applicable laws regarding home warranty services and monitors the financial condition of the company for the protection of their clients.

    What's covered?

Mosthome warranty companies offer a variety of plans, each providing different levels of coverage, so be sure to read the details of any contract before buying. Even if you choose to renew the contract from year-to-year, double-check the details of your plan because coverage can change annually. Here is a general idea of what a homeowner can expect to find in each tier of service:
