With Drivable Grass in hand, Super-Sod is Sponsoring The 2014 Water Education Summit this September in Asheville, NC

    - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Asheville, NC (PRWEB) August 28, 2014

Super-Sod's new product, Drivable Grass, an environmentally friendly, permeable alternative to concrete, will be featured in their booth at the upcoming 2014 Water Education Summit in Asheville, NC, September 8-10. Discussions will include: conserving water locally, climate change, and watershed planning. Super-Sod brings Drivable Grass to the discussion as a beautiful, easy, and durable option for conserving water, reducing runoff, and mitigating Heat Island Effect.

Drivable Grass is a simple solution for water resource management using living material (turfgrass) to capture and process pollutants without giving up the area to unsightly detention basins or filtration ponds. Turfgrass is a natural bio-filter. Storm-water storage is increased and runoff is minimized when turfgrass is used in conjunction with Drivable Grass to filter, collect, and store run-off underground, underneath a Drivable Grass infrastructure that can be designed to have an attractive, modern look and to allow people and vehicles to use the space in a functional way.

The Drivable Grass system is used for storm drains, detention basins, ditches, filtration systems, bio-swale reinforcement, culvert outlets, fire lanes, and parking lot rainwater capture, just to name a few applications.

Landscape professionals, builders, planners, architects, educators, activists, and anyone in the public sphere interested in learning more about water conservation or Drivable Grass can attend the educational event. A link to The Summit's website can be found on Super-Sod's event & lawn tip calendar.

Super-Sod is a family-run business that employs experts in turf and horticulture. One of their most popular products has been their Soil3 organic compost, delivered in a cubic yard BigYellowBag, which they make partially from composted grass clippings from their sod production. Super-Sod continues to develop new garden products, foster gardening and landscaping, and always seeks to improve their farming practices, technology, environmental stewardship, and employee knowledge. Super-Sod Outlets serve Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, North Florida, and into Alabama, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Despite late grass, events at park will go on

    - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LAKE GEORGE -- Two events scheduled for Charles R. Wood Park in the coming weeks will be held on the newly turfed site as organizers took steps Thursday to minimize potential damage to the new grass.

Warren County leaders had expressed concern earlier this week, because sod placed on the park was put in three weeks later than planned.

The delay means the grass is susceptible to damage when the Shrine Circus and American Music Festival for the Lake take place next month, which prompted talk of moving the events.

Lake George Mayor Robert Blais and county officials discussed the issue Thursday, and agreed to take precautions and use certain parts of Charles R. Wood Park that will allow the events to be held there as scheduled.

Blais said truck traffic will be limited during both the circus and concert, and a stage for the concert will be placed to limit issues with the grass.

Blais said more than 1,000 people are expected for the three-day music festival, which is growing as more acts commit to perform.

He had looked into moving the circus to state-owned Battlefield Park if the grass was not ready at Charles R. Wood Park, but the state would not allow it, Blais said. And no alternative site is available that is big enough for the concert.

Warren County Public Works Superintendent Jeff Tennyson said county officials were satisfied with the steps that would be taken during the events to limit traffic on the grass.

Were confident we can get them on the site without any problems, Tennyson said. The grass is getting green and growing well.

    Spectacle Island, Boston Harbor

    - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Jayne Glennon Green, brown and white pieces of glass, tumbled smooth by the Atlantic, litter the south beach of Spectacle Island. Atop the grassy hill that leads down to this beach, a lone tree points east, a leafy flag in the wind. Gravel and stone dust trails circle up to the tree and then down and across lowland to the north side of the island and circle again to the top of another slightly taller grassy hill, this one topped by a gazebo. More than five miles of walking trails amid various stubby pine trees, sumac, raspberry vines and wildflowers, climb two drumlins that make up this lovely wind-blown island.

Spectacle Island is part of the Boston Harbor Islands, a National Park Area. At one time it was a garbage dump; the dumping ended in 1959 but the island languished for many years. Standing atop what used to be under Boston, both hills offer spectacular views of the city, the harbor and the awesome Atlantic.

Thrilled to have my dear friend Karen join me, we bought $15 round-trip ferry tickets at a booth on Long Wharf. Our tickets included George's Island, but we were to spend the day on Spectacle. The ferry ride was 20 minutes, and we enjoyed the different perspective of the waterfront and seaport. The visitor's center welcomed all and is the only building on the island other than two gazebos. Bathrooms, a snackbar and an island history exhibit are open to visitors when the ferries are running. Guided tours are offered by park rangers but we chose the self guided pamphlet.

Following the 10 tour stops in order, the path leads around and up the north drumlin. From here 360-degree views of Boston Harbor were breathtaking. The harbor channel, Logan Airport, many harbor islands, the Boston skyline and the Atlantic surrounded us. We picnicked, soaked in lots of fresh air and then continued the tour. Headed to South Beach along the eastern edge of the island, a massive stone sea wall has been built to hold the island/landfill in place. Spectacle Island was a beautiful place to walk with several miles of easy hills. Ferry service runs through Oct. 13.

The Yankees are annoying, but they can make it up to us

    - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Yankees can make us all happy they exist. All they have to do is call up a Triple-A pitcher throwing well this year.

Yankees fans: Your team is annoying.

You wouldn't think that's a controversial statement, but every time I write something that even dances around a suggestion of a hint of an implication of that theme, I get emails. I get nasty tweets. It surprises me every time. Embrace it, Yankees fans. Embrace it. It's one part being better than everyone over the last century, one part getting more attention than everyone over the last century. Those are good things. Your team is annoying because of things that make you happy.

My team is annoying, too. The Giants weaponized Barry Bonds and sent him out into the world, and they've also had recent success in the postseason. Both of those things bother a lot of people. They're not as annoying as the Yankees, but, ha ha, no one is. It's not a bad thing. Embrace it or get used to people laughing at you when you get upset. Either way, just know that this is an objective truth.

For the last two seasons, the rest of us have had to follow retirement tours. All we want are baseball highlights, yet we have to sit through videos of Derek Jeter accepting alabaster gazebos and pretending to be grateful. This comes a year after watching Mariano Rivera going from ballpark to ballpark, accepting 500-pound pewter M&Ms he didn't want.

The Yankees are literally fighting for a playoff spot right now, which is absurdly annoying. They're playing a mummy at shortstop and almost every player they have is hurt or ineffective. They've been outscored by 25 runs on the season, giving them the same expected win-loss record as the Padres. Instead, they're fighting for their 18th playoff appearance of the last 20 years.

Yankees fans: Your team is annoying.

But there's a way the team can make it up to us. Well, partially make it up to us. It would take decades and decades of losing before the other 29 teams became totally sympathetic toward the Yankees, but there's a way to make us root for the Yankees on September 1. All they have to do is call up a Triple-A pitcher who has performed well at almost every stop of the minor leagues. Look at these stats:

Those are delightful stats. If the Yankees make room on the 40-man roster for this pitcher, everyone will root for him. Everyone will at least be curious about him, curious enough to tune into a Yankees broadcast for reasons other than hate-watching.

Here is a screenshot from that player'sBaseball-Reference page:

Family drama Fences begins Aug. 29 at Actors Warehouse

    - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. Last Modified: Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 1:43 p.m.

A glimpse of life for an African-American family man struggling for justice and fair treatment in 1950s America comes through in Fences, an award-winning family drama that kicks off the new season at the Actors Warehouse on Friday.

Written by award-winning playwright August Wilson and directed by Carol Velasques Richardson, Fences explores the life and relationships of Troy Maxson, a complex 53-year-old husband and father who is embittered by the hardships, injustices and unfairness he has endured in his life.

Wilson writes with a sense of commitment to the African-American way of life, commitment to the African-American life and spirituality, Richardson said.

Wilson (1945-2005) is an acclaimed American playwright who wrote about the African-American experience. Fences, which is one of a series of three plays called The Pittsburgh Cycle, won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award. James Earl Jones originated Maxsons role when the play opened in 1987, earning him a Tony Award for best actor. A production of Fences featuring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis won three Tony Awards in 2010 for Best Revival of a Play, Best Actor and Best Actress.

Richardson said Fences, which is set in 1950s Pittsburgh, explores manhood, family and self-identity. Richardson said Maxson, played by Stan Richardson, is the voice of the play, while Rose, played by Rhonda Wilson, is the glue that keeps the family together.

Maxson has had a hard life. He escaped an abusive father, spent time in prison, found success in the Negro Baseball League and then was denied by racism the opportunity to achieve his dream of playing in the major leagues.

This is a timeless piece people will enjoy, Velasques Richardson said. They will recognize the language and the costume of people sitting in the yard together, telling stories, playing cards and dominoes. Wilson does a beautiful job of capturing the feeling of family and community.

Maxson is a very challenging role; a character who is fueled by his unfulfilled dream of playing baseball in the major leagues, and his feelings that the color barrier kept him out of baseball, Stan Richardson said.

He is a very complex character dealing with a lot of demons from his past, he said.
