Dream Office Real Estate Investment Trust, the worst-performing REIT in Canada over the past year, is banking on tower renovations and adding retail to keep tenants amid a wave of new office supply.

Dream Office, the largest office REIT in Canada, is seeking to sell as much as C$150 million ($138 million) of properties this year in smaller markets, and to upgrade its buildings and add retail space in its Toronto and Montreal properties, according to Chief Executive Officer Jane Gavan.

It used to be pure office -- thats all we looked at, Gavan said in Bloombergs Toronto office on Aug. 27. For us, theres going to be a lot of opportunity to develop the things we own and add retail.

Dream Office units have dropped 0.3 percent to C$28.95 over the past 12 months, for a yield of 7.7 percent, the worst performance among the 15-member Standard & Poors/TSX Capped REIT Index, which has gained 13 percent on average in the same period.

Significant multiple expansion is unlikely to take place in the near term given expected challenges in the Canadian office market, Matt Kornack, an analyst at National Bank Financial who rates the stock a buy, said in an Aug.10 note to clients. Kornack said Dream Office has longer-term value because of the quality and location of its portfolio, and offers an attractive yield for investors.

Dream Office, the largest office REIT in Canada, is seeking to sell as much as C$150 million ($138 million) of properties this year in smaller markets, and to upgrade its buildings and add retail space in its Toronto and Montreal properties, according to Chief Executive Officer Jane Gavan.

About 7.9 million square feet of commercial space will hit the market in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, and Ottawa, this year and next, weighing on rental rates, according to New York-based real estate-services firm Cushman & Wakefield Inc. Toronto-based Dream Office is preparing for the crunch by adding shops and restaurants that net higher rents, Gavan said.

A West Palm Beach woman is getting some much-needed help after fire badly damaged her mobile home.

Angie Wielonski and her three children were in the mobile home Tuesday when the kitchen caught fire. They escaped without getting hurt.

But the kitchen sustained fire and smoke damage.

Wielonski said she began to worry about where they would stay.

"I'm a single mom, and I have three kids," Wielonski said. "One of them is autistic, and one of them has ADHD. We're on disability, so I really can't afford to pay my rent and pay to fix the damages."

The American Red Cross put the family up in a hotel for one night.

A businessman who owns a fire, smoke and water restoration company saw the story that aired on WPBF-TV and decided to help.

Don Dillon said he wants to pay for the family to stay in the hotel longer and give them money for food. He has also offered to repair her home for free.

"We're going to put a crew out there (Friday) morning to see how we can help clean the place up and try to get her back in there in three or four days," Dillon said.

Wielonski said the principal at her children's school is helping them with food and paid for two nights at the hotel.

SIOUX FALLS - Earlier this year, the Events Center project team determined an issue with the exterior metal siding on the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.

Director of Public Works Mark Cotter said the metal panels have been deemed nonconforming work.

To determine a solution to the issue, the city says two mock-ups, or test areas, of the siding will begin to be installed the week of September 8.

The metal panels will not detract from how much fans will enjoy their experience in this building, Cotter say. However, we want to make sure every inch of this beautiful building is completely correct, and the project team is very engaged in finding the right solution.

The material for the mock-ups is already on site, and new siding will be installed in two areas of the building near the southwest entrance, according to Cotter. The two mock-ups will be installed using two different methods of jointing the panels. Installation will be complete by mid-October. Then the mock-ups will be evaluated as to which installation method provides the best solution.

Sewage ejector systems that are chronically clogged and HVAC systems that give out in extreme weather are issues that rank high on a list of growing concerns among commercial and industrial facility managers in aging industrial areas of New York and New Jersey. Ed Drejman, who heads Pump Express Services, the service division of New Jersey-based pump retailer, Pump Products, is part of a team that is shifting it's focus from pump repairs and maintenance to addressing these and other growing job site challenges with innovative pumping equipment characterized by heavy-duty design, high performance and versatility.

"Some systems we're called in to service are so old, they've started to collapse," says Drejman. "Even pump systems in newer buildings installed in the 1970s and 80s, are showing signs of wear. Only much-needed upgrades can prevent continuing breakdowns that increase the damage to an aging infrastructure, and in some cases, threaten public health.
