A pest control officer says he responded to a call of a wasp infestation in a home that was "like the horror film 'Birds' but [with] wasps."
ABC News reported that a monstrous colony of wasps invaded a home in the Worchester, Hampshire, U.K. John Birkett, an employee at Longwood Services Pest Control, said he got a call to respond to a nest that had taken over a bed in a spare bedroom in family's home, and the colony was devouring the bed.
When Birkett arrived at the house, he said told ABC News he "couldn't believe my eyes," referring to the nest of an estimated 5,000 wasps. In more than 40 years of working in the pest control business, Birkett said this was the largest nest he had ever seen.
The nest had grown so large because the family rarely uses the room on the second floor of their five-bedroom home, he said.
Birkett was able to eradicate all the wasps and said he was even able to salvage the crocheted blanket they were nesting on.

Bats are a type of pest that in general could use a little PR help. Most people are not fans of bats and want nothing to do with them while others have them purposefully living on their property. The truth is that bats are not all bad and there are in fact both pros and cons to having them live on your property. The professionals at Thomas Pest Service want to provide you with information about what those pros and cons are, why bats are harmful to have in your home, and what to do if you do find that they have made your home into their home.
First lets start with the pros on why bats are actually beneficial to have living in and around your outdoor property. Bats are very valuable to our eco-system for several different reasons. Bats are natural pollinators, they help to transfer pollen from flower to flower which in turn helps to pollinate a wide variety of plants and flowers. Along with pollination they help to transfer the seeds of many plants like bananas, avocados, and peaches to name a few. Bats help to keep other pests like mosquitoes, wasps, beetles, and gnats under control, by feeding on hundreds of them an hour. Also, while you dont want bat feces (guano) in or on your home, in your garden it is actually a superb fertilizer because of its high nitrogen content.
Now onto the cons of why having bats on your property may not be so great, especially when they take up residence in your home. Bats can take over roof and attic spaces of houses, garages and other buildings in order to roost and nest in. Having bats and their young living in or on your home can be very damaging to it. Their feces can be corrosive and contaminate and damage insulation and other building materials, and spread serious illness to you and your family. Histoplasmosis is one such illness that is spread by breathing in a fungus that accumulates within bat droppings. Bats are also carriers of rabies. Bats in general are not super aggressive but like any animal will defend themselves by biting or scratching if they feel trapped or threatened. Being bitten or scratched by a potential rabies carrier is a serious situation and can be very dangerous for you or your pets.
So while bats do have their benefits, if they are found living too close or even in your home they should be removed for the health and safety of you, your family, and pets. While there are many things that you can do yourself around your home, bat control is one of the things that should not be on your DIY list. Handling or trying to get rid of bats on your own can be dangerous and lead to injury or illness, therefore it should not be attempted. Removing wildlife from your home or property should only be done so by a trained and experienced professional for the safety of both you and the animals themselves.

New regional pest management plan now operative
Waikato Regional Councils new regional pest management plan has today been put into operation on the casting vote of the chairperson Paula Southgate.
Cr Southgate said after the council meeting the decision would not rule out councillors challenging parts of the plan they were concerned about in future where appropriate.
The tight vote followed concerns from some councillors about the wording of the plan and their understanding of it.
Cr Kathy White was concerned about wording that suggested a potential increase in the use of toxins to control pests and other matters. Cr Clyde Graf moved the plan lie on the table pending further discussion, even though others noted the plan had been developed under a proper and expensive process and couldnt be changed without starting the process over again.
The vote on Cr Grafs motion to let the plan lie on the table was split 6-6. The motion was then defeated by Cr Southgates casting vote.
Subsequently, the vote on making the plan operative was passed on the chairs casting vote.
Those voting against making it operative were councillors Graf, White, Stark, Bramley, Hennebry and Husband. Those voting for include councillors Southgate, Buckley, Simcock, Kneebone, Alan Livingston and Vercoe.

A home in the U.K. was invaded by a monstrous colony of wasps, and the infestation was like a scene out of a 1960s Hitchcock movie, a local pest controller said.
"I couldn't believe my eyes," John Birkett, an employee at Longwood Services Pest Control, told ABC News today, referring to the nest of an estimated 5,000 wasps. "It was like the horror film 'Birds' but [with] wasps."
Birkett said he got a call from the homeowners son on Sunday about a nest that had taken over a bed in a spare bedroom in the home in Worchester, Hampshire. The colony was devouring the bedding.

In more than 40 years of working in the pest control business, Birkett said this was the largest nest he had ever seen.
"I got dressed up looking like 'Batman and Robin' and went into the little tiny bedroom. I was spraying them left right and center," Birkett said.
After two hours of swatting and spraying, Birkett said he was able to get rid of the wasps and even salvage the crocheted blanket they were nesting on.
The nest had grown so large because the family rarely uses the room on the second floor of their five-bedroom home, he said.
The wasps snuck in through an open window and used the bed as their home for nearly three months, chewing through eight inches of the mattress and two pillows, according to Birkett.

POLICE are appealing for information after a Darlington home was burgled while the occupants were on holiday.
The burglar smashed the glass patio doors at the rear of a house on Arthur Street and stole high-value items including two laptop computers, a Wii games console, Wii balance board, lots of games and some tools.
The break-in happened sometime between 10am on Monday, August 11 and 11am the following day.
PC Jim Edwards of Darlington police said: The owners of the property were away when the burglary occurred and are devastated that their home was invaded while they were on holiday and that their property was stolen.
They are appealing to anyone who has information regarding this burglary to contact police on 101.
Homeowners are advised to make a trusted friend, neighbour or family member aware they are going away so that the vacant property can be checked in their absence on a regular basis.
We would also suggest that people take appropriate security measures when away such as using timing devices for lights, security marking property and ensuring all property is as secure as possible particularly now the darker nights are encroaching.
Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious during the times outlined above should contact police on 101.

CARY, N.C. -- Ply Gem Holdings, Inc., a leading manufacturer of exterior building products in North America, through its subsidiary, Ply Gem Industries, has signed an agreement with Fortune Brands Home & Security, Inc. (FBHS) to acquire Simonton Windows - one of America's leading vinyl window and patio door manufacturers with revenues over $300 million. As part of the deal, Ply Gem will also acquire all assets of SimEx, a vinyl and PVC foam extrusion manufacturing operation in West Virginia, from Fortune Brands. The transaction, valued at approximately $130 million, aligns with Ply Gem's plans for growing strategically while contributing to earnings growth through targeted acquisitions of complementary specialty product lines.
The transaction combines two leading low-maintenance, energy-efficient residential window businesses under the Ply Gem umbrella, and is expected to:
Create a more comprehensive, balanced portfolio by combining Simonton's strength in the repair and remodeling (R&R) market with Ply Gem's leadership in the new construction market.
Establish a stronger national residential windows platform with manufacturing scale and channel distribution advantages to serve both R&R and new construction customers.
Generate opportunities for operational efficiencies to enhance customer service and propel future profitability and growth, core tenets of Ply Gem's strategic vision.
"The addition of Simonton Windows is in full alignment with our strategic growth plan and will better balance the mix of end markets that we serve while strengthening our core capabilities and contributing significantly to revenues in the future," said Gary E. Robinette, Ply Gem's President and CEO. "A prominent brand, Simonton has consistently been ranked a leader in the J.D. Powers Window and Patio Doors Satisfaction StudySM and is known for exceptional quality and service. Simonton Windows ideally complements our existing portfolio of window products."
Robinette adds, "Simonton is a perfect fit for the Ply Gem culture, and we are confident this new addition will help us achieve synergies and competitive advantages that drive growth in top line sales and customer and shareholder value."
Expected to close in October pending regulatory approval, Ply Gem is funding the deal through a combination of cash-on-hand and new debt. After giving effect to anticipated cost savings and synergies, the acquisition is expected to be credit accretive.
Ply Gem will operate Simonton Windows as a stand-alone business unit, similar to the way the company's existing Siding and Window groups operate today. Simonton customers will continue to be serviced through its existing relationships.
"We will be very pleased to welcome the experienced Simonton management team to Ply Gem when the deal is closed," said Robinette. "We look forward to working with them - and all Simonton associates - in the years ahead to build and maintain the best exterior building products company in the industry," said Robinette.
