The Labor Day holiday is expected to attract about 10,070 visitors to town Saturday, according to the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Associations lodging barometer.

The figure represents 64 percent capacity at area lodging properties, with downtown occupancy at 100 percent. On the mountain, hotels are forecast at 76 percent capacity and condos are predicted to be 47 percent full.

Lodging is expected to dip to 3,887 on Wednesday.

The Chambers lodging barometer is based on survey data from local lodging properties. Its primary function is to help businesses determine staffing levels during the winter and summer tourism seasons. Actual lodging occupancy levels tend to increase from the forecast levels as a result of last-minute bookings.

Beginning Tuesday, construction crews working on the U.S. Highway 40 project will begin a schedule of night work. According to Eric Marsh, Steamboat operations manager for Connell Resources. That work will take place generally from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights east and west of downtown Steamboat Springs.

Current work includes installing new traffic signal conduits at Pine Grove Road as well as installation of concrete curb and gutter, sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramp improvements and center median concrete removal and replacement from Third Street to the Hilltop intersection. There also is center median work being done from Third Street to the Anglers intersection.

During the project, motorists can expect various alternating single-lane and multiple-lane shifts or closures and turn lane closures at Hilltop, Anglers, Pine Grove and Walton Creek roads. No work is being performed in downtown Steamboat Springs from 13th to Third streets.

Delays of about 10 to 20 minutes from one end of the project to the other should be expected, and work will continue during the day and at night.

The $6 million road improvement project is being constructed by Connell Resources of Steamboat Springs. The project information line is 970-871-7979.

MUSCATINE, Iowa As schools get back into session, Muscatine's road construction is nearing the beginning of the end for this year.

Three of the projects that have been under way since the beginning of spring have made significant progress, according to project managers, but there still remains work to be done on all of these.

Cedar Street

Work has begun on the third of four stages of the Cedar Street Reconstruction Project, said project manager Bill Haag.

The first phase, which included Cedar Street from the Parham Street intersection to Stone Brook Drive, began in March and ended in May. It was then that the second phase, including Cedar Street from Houser Street to Imperial Oaks Drive, began. Just as the school year began for nearby Muscatine High School, which has an access road to Cedar Street in that area, the second phase of the constriction had been completed, Haag said.

The third phase of the Cedar street involves the area between Imperial Oaks and Stone Brook Drive. Earthwork and storm sewers have been completed, but paving for the roadway will probably start within a few weeks. Some utility infrastructure will also have to be repositioned as part of the reconstruction work.

Haag said the contractors are still looking to complete phase four, a roundabout intersection at Cedar and Logan streets, before Thanksgiving of this year. However, some of the accessory portions of the project, such as new sidewalks, new grass and other items, will likely have to wait until next spring.

"There's plenty of time to get that done," Haag said.

Colorado Street

After lagging somewhat behind schedule for the past couple of months due to inclement weather conditions, project director Jim Edgemond said work on the Colorado Street Reconstruction Project has gotten slightly ahead of schedule. "It's all pretty positive," he said.

After only one preseason game at Levi's Stadium, the failing sod had to be ripped up and torn out last week after 49ers players began slipping and sliding during a practice.

Now, after another game on the new turf, the sod has to be replaced again. As you can see in the photo below, which Instagram user hundreddollarman, via the San Jose Mercury News, says he snapped on Monday afternoon.

So, um, what's up?

According to the Mercury News, the team only installed the sod for last weekend's preseason game vs. the Chargers to be used temporarily and now will install a new field this weekend.

That turf should be ready for the 49ers home opener vs. the Bears on Sept. 14 (and the Sept. 6 Chile-Mexico soccer match).

For all you grass buffs out there, the team and its consultants are deciding whether it should continue to use Bandera Bermuda sod or switch to a Tifway grass that the paper says is used by more NFL squads.

Even actor Tom Hanks has an opinion about whether the athletes at the 2015 Women's World Cup should play on artificial turf or grass.

A group of players from the U.S. women's national team, who will vie for a spot in the World Cup in October qualifying, have joined with several international players in protesting the turf surfaces for next summer's big event in Canada. And they're getting rapidly growing support from the sport's fans, including Hanks.

Last week Hanks, a big soccer fan, voiced his support on Twitter: "Opinion: Women's World Cup is the best Soccer of the year. Hey FIFA, they deserve real grass. Put in sod. Hanx."

The athletes say that it's not just a safety issue because turf is less forgiving than natural grass, it's about equity. They argue the men weren't asked to play soccer's top international tournament on a fake surface.

"It really goes down to this: The men would never play a World Cup on turf, so why should the women? It's the same tournament. It's the World Cup," U.S. forward Sydney Leroux said. "It's the biggest thing that we have for soccer. Why would we play on something that's not real?"

The athletes have formally joined in a letter of protest penned to FIFA, the sport's international governing body, and the Canadian Soccer Association. If they don't hear back soon, legal action could be taken in Canada based on that country's laws against gender-based discrimination.

Boies, Schiller & Flexner, the law firm involved in the recent lawsuit filed by former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon against the NCAA, drafted the letter on behalf of the players and is prepared to go to court.

"I think it resonates with a lot of people," said Boise Schiller & Flexner attorney Hampton Dellinger. "It's important in and of itself, but it's also important on a symbolic level, that if some of the world's greatest athletes can be treated this way, it's a real setback for gender equity in sports. It should have never gotten to this point, but it's not too late for Canadian soccer and FIFA to do the right thing."

In an email to The Associated Press, FIFA acknowledged receipt of the letter, but declined further comment. The Canadian Soccer Association deferred to FIFA for reaction.
