Montgomery County Public Schools IT project manager Kelvin Purvis (left) assists Kenneth Jordan of Clinton Learning Solutions as they hand the ActivBoard for the Promethean interactive whiteboard at Waters Landing Elementary School on Thursday in the Germantown schools new addition.
When students return to Waters Landing Elementary School in Germantown on Monday , they will not only see a bigger and brighter school but also reminders of the dolphin they recently adopted at the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
You dont usually get dolphins on a carpet, said Principal Tina Shrewsbury about the images of blue-gray dolphins imbedded into a section of new floor in the newly expanded school.
Thanks to two new additions, Waters Landing is expected to enroll about 690 students this fall, about the same as last year.
However, all will be inside the school instead of some of them outside in portable classrooms that are now a thing of the past.
Its a pleasure to have everyone in the building under one roof, Shrewsbury said.
The additions will also enable adding another 50 students in the future, bringing total capacity to 740, she said.
Waters Landing Elementary is hosting a Sneak Peek visit for students and families at 3 p.m. on Friday before school starts.
Im very pleased about the additions to Waters Landing, said school PTA President Danielle Deaver in an email. The work looks wonderful, and the children and teachers are going to be very excited to see their new classrooms. Ive also talked to many parents who are happy that our children will no longer be attending classes in mobile units.

HEBRON With an increasing number of window failures at RHAM High School, the Board of Education is looking at suing the company that provided and installed windows, Region 8 Board of Education Member Joseph E. OConnor said.
Nearly 300 of the heat-mirror windows have failed and need to be replaced, he said, adding that its likely the remaining 200 windows also will fail and should be replaced.
The windows were made and installed by EFCO, a Missouri company. That particular model is no longer being made by the company.
School officials first raised the issue of window problems in 2013.
While the manufacturer agreed early this year to cover the costs for 166 replacement windows, the school system learned it would have to pay around $125,000 for the shipping, storing, and installation of the windows.
In 2013, RHAM Superintendent of Schools Robert Siminski and maintenance Director Michael Ceresa noticed a pattern of over 160 window failures at the high school, and the problem became worse during the winter of 2013.
Moisture was getting in between the panes of glass due to a failed seal, they said.
Many of the failed windows are stained and discolored due to long-term residual condensation, RHAM Board of Education Chairman Danny Holtsclaw has said.
EFCO recently inspected the school and saw that the number of failed windows had risen to over 300 windows, OConnor said.
But the company said it would honor only the 166 it had agreed to earlier because the warranty expired in 2013, he said.

Now, the Seiberts are razing a warehouse on Carpenter Lane to construct a 25-unit condo and mixed-use building.
The project, 520 Carpenter Lane, will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified (LEED). Construction is scheduled to start in early 2015 and, with some modular designs, should be completed in six to nine months, G.C. Seibert said.
Re:Vision Architecture is designing the three-story building, which also will include a public courtyard and garden, cafe tables, and shared work space available for rent.
Elfant Wissahickon is the real estate broker for the units, which range in price from $250,000 to $450,000.
The Seiberts also hope to incorporate "passive-house" design, to reduce the need for insulation and multiple water heaters.
Instead of a 50-gallon water tank in each unit, for example, they may install a 2,000-gallon tank that can service them all and be heated by solar power.
"It's like using a one-liter bottle vs. a six-pack," said G.C. Seibert. "There's less waste and less overhead."
Scott, 38, and G.C., 43, bought their first fixer-upper homes when they were in college.
"Our parents fixed up properties, and we spent weekends helping them do that," said G.C., who studied mechanical engineering at Lehigh University, then earned an MBA there.
Scott attended Carnegie Mellon for business and then worked at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

DUBAI, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- Dubai Investments PJSC (DI), a leading investment company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has reinforced the production capabilities of its subsidiaries dealing in building materials amidst accelerating trends in the real estate and construction sector across the UAE and the region, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.
This comes in the wake of winning significant orders and project for 18 of its subsidiaries involved in the manufacturing of building materials and construction products.
DI subsidiaries such as Glass LLC, Emirates Building Systems and Dubai Cranes have reported a number of new projects across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, among others.
Notable projects won by DI subsidiaries include glass orders for Dubai Design, Habtoor Hotel, Masdar office building in Dubai, Credit Lebanese HQ in Beirut, steel structures for Riyadh Public Transport, three petrochemical projects for Saudi Aramco, end-to-end steel building solutions for FIFA 2022 stadiums in Qatar, petrochemical projects in Oman as well as residential and airport developments in the UAE.
Construction activity across the UAE has witnessed a major upswing this year, with projects worth US$46 billion awarded in 2014 alone, a significant rise from US$38 billion last year.
A vast majority of these contracts are in the residential sector, and the uptrend in the construction sector is set to boost the country's Gross Domestic Product for 2014 by four per cent to approximately US$404 billion, up from $390 billion in 2013.
Abdulaziz bin Yagub Al Serkal, General Manager of Dubai Investments, said that 2014 has been a momentous year for DI's business growth in the real estate and construction sector, noting that the construction industry has always been a key source in driving growth for the UAE's economy.
"The current upswing, especially in residential projects, has led to unprecedented demand for quality building materials and innovations - which offers us a huge growth opportunity," he said.
"High demand as a result of the construction boom in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and across the Middle East is also placing added demand on the capacities of our companies dealing in building materials."
In line with this, some of the DI subsidiaries have bolstered their production capacities, he said.
