200 geese in two parks killed by Sandwell Council

    - August 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

More than 200 Canadian geese from two parks in the Black Country have been killed by Sandwell Council.

The move has prompted outrage from bird lovers - who secretly filmed pest control workers ushering the wildfowl into a van in Victoria Park in Tipton.

The video - recorded by Ian Carroll, a member of Sandwell Swanwatch:

Ian Carroll, of Sandwell Swanwatch, said the decision to kill the 220 birds is the worst incident he has seen in his 17 years of rescuing geese in the area.

Councillor Maria Crompton, cabinet member for highways and environment, said the killings were carried out as humanely as possible and as a last resort.

Mr Carroll said: "I am utterly staggered by the numbers of geese that have been killed.

"I have spent the last 17 years rescuing swans and wildfowl in Sandwell who have been maimed by other animals or wanton acts of violence at the hands of thugs.

"But this action by the council is worse than all of these incidents put together.

The wildlife rescuer secretly filmed the workers ushering the birds, including baby goslings, into a van to be taken away and killed.

He had submitted a Freedom of Information request to the council who admitted they had humanely killed the geese.

School project edges towards completion after six years

    - August 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Regional News of Friday, 22 August 2014

    Source: GNA

A block of six classrooms with an office and store for the Atimatim D/A Primary School in the Afigya-Kwabre District is edging towards completion after being left abandoned for six years.

Funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GET-Fund), it would provide space to enroll more pre-school kids in the community.

The contractors told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday that they would do everything to deliver the project within the specified period of four months.

He said they had fixed the doors and would tackle the improvement of the floors, fixing windows, painting and the washrooms very soon.

The GNA carried a report on the abandoned project in early June after a visit to the school under STAR-Ghanas media auditing and tracking of development projects, an initiative launched to put a spotlight on how governments resources were helping to transform the lives of the people.

The goal is to aid transparency, promote accountability and good governance.

Mr Kwaku Oppong-Kyekyeku Kaakyire, the District Chief Executive (DCE), has already inspected the progress of work, and expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of job done so far.

He urged the contractors to maintain the momentum, saying that, they would not accept excuses for any delay.

Planning Charette at arts council gives locals a look at plans, designs for streets

    - August 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

On Wednesday, members of the North Carolina Arts Council listened to the opinions of the residents on planning and design.

Two days later, the council came back with a blueprint based off local concepts.

On Friday at the Community Council for the Arts, a follow-up to the Corridors of Connectivity meeting where members of the North Carolina Arts Council and other groups presented some of their plans for the design of Queen and Herritage streets.

Landscape Architect Glen Walters gave a presentation based on some of the ideas of the citizens such as vibrant signs and walkways providing information about the African-American Music Trail.

I thought this week was really great and we have a good direction on the priorities of the city, Walters said. In all honesty, we werent as aware of the music history and we felt a lot closer to Kinston through the inspiration of the artists. Its inspired us to bring that in with our designs.

Chris Beachem, senior program director for creative economies at the North Carolina Arts Council, said the ideas were exciting, but implementing them could be a daunting task.

In the big picture, it takes a lot of money and time, so we have to find little side pieces and start on what we can do, Beachem said. I do a lot of work in Durham and people have said theres not much happening here, and then Ill say Were you here 15 years ago? There has been significant growth there and 15 years down the road, it will difficult for someone who hadnt been to Durham in 30 years to identify it because of the tremendous growth.

To a certain extent, I see Kinston moving in the same way. The progress made will be steady and people need to keep pushing and working. I believe in five years there will be significant change to South Queen Street and I would be very disappointed if thats not the case.

Kinston Mayor Pro Tem Joe Tyson attended the meetings and said it will take time for the project to come into fruition and nothing is set in stone.

I thought the meetings were productive, Tyson said. I liked the input from citizens, but everyone has to know this is strictly a plan. Hopefully, we can use this in the future to seek grant money for the future.

Infinity pool fencing laws are 'crazy' and 'stupid', industry claims

    - August 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Water wise: Steve Devine watches his son Nathan, 7, swim in their infinity pool, which doesn't meet the new standard. Photo: Wolter Peeters

A new rule requiring infinity pools to be fenced to prevent children climbing up over the invisible edge of pool walls has been described as "crazy", "stupid" and "illogical" by the pool industry.

NSW's $31 million infinity pool industry has come to a standstill because of a change in the building code that said "out of the ground pool wall" (the wall of the pool where the water appears to disappear) of a minimum height of 1.2 metres could no longer be considered an effective barrier.

NSW is the only place not just in Australia, but in the world, that deems these pool walls to be illegal.

One Sydney council insisted on fencing the base of six-metre high pylons, to stop children from climbing up to enter an infinity pool that jutted out over a cliff face.

The state government said the new rule would "align with the policy and intent of the Swimming Pools Act and Regulation," the new fencing regime to reduce backyard drownings.

Strathfield real estate agent Steve Devine believes the new pool rules are "a ticking time bomb."

His infinity pool is surrounded by 1.2 metre to 1.3 metre high slippery glass walls. The only access is via childproof gates that can only be opened from the inside by somebody tall enough to reach over.

When Mr Devine's family built their new home four years ago, it was designed so the edge of the infinity pool overlooked the family's tennis court. "We complied with all the requirements four years ago. Had we known the rules would change, we would have designed a different pool. But I don't believe our children would be any safer than they currently are."
