The practice set was hard-fought, and when Djokovic fell behind in the tie-break he signalled his commitment by hurling his racket to the ground and walloping a ball out of the stadium (or as near as you can get in this cavernous place). The mini-tantrum seemed to revive him and he promptly reeled off six straight points to finish the contest and underline Murrays recent problems in closing out winning positions.
From Murrays perspective, even to reach the second week would be a respectable achievement. He opens against Robin Haase, the talented Dutchman who gave him a real scare in the second round of the 2011 US Open.
If he gets through that one, his most likely opponents would be Radek Stepanek, who beat him at Queens a couple of months ago, in the second round, followed by possible meetings with Verdasco and Tsonga.
Of course, draws rarely pan out the way they look on paper, but there is no doubt that Murrays quarter of the field is the spikiest on show. By contrast, the two Swiss masters Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka can thank the US Opens computers for spitting out some comfortable opponents in the early rounds.
On the womens side, Heather Watson should be pleased to have drawn Romanias Sorana Cirstea, who started the year just outside the top 20 but now stands at No81. If Watson wins that one, she could play Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard in what would be a fascinating second-round match-up, especially as Bouchard has also struggled for form since the grass-court season.
Britains No2, Johanna Konta, also has a winnable tie against Shahar Peer, of Israel, who stands 44 places below her on the ladder at No155. The most enticing first-round match in the tournament, though, must be the one between defending champion Serena Williams and the gifted and stylish 18-year-old Taylor Townsend.
Williams has rediscovered her form since the bizarre episode at Wimbledon when she walked onto court in what looked like a hypnotic trance, and could not even catch the balls when they were passed to her, let alone hit them across the net. Asked about the mystery on Thursday, she was typically enigmatic. I worked really hard before Wimbledon, Williams said, but it just didnt transpire there.

Police say solution to problem of stock on roads lies in partnership, not blame Friday, 22 August 2014 - 11:58am
Waikato
Waikato Police are urging land owners to check the integrity of their fences and gates and motorists to ensure their vehicles are up to warrant of fitness standard following a number of crashes and near misses this week.
District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace, said the week started with a driver being seriously hurt in a two car collision with a cow in rongo near Kopu early on Monday morning.
"Then on Tuesday morning another driver was seriously hurt when his car collided with a car on SH2 between Ngatea and Kerephi shortly after 3am."
"If that wasn't of enough concern our staff, animal control officers and concerned members of the public also had to deal with a number of other incidents to try and prevent further road trauma."
Those incidents include;
6-10 sheep on SH23/ Manukau Rd Raglan about midday on Sunday. A cow on SH2 near Steen Rd Waitakaruru about 2pm Sunday. Four cows wandering from Island Block Rd on to SH1 at Meremere about 4pm Sunday. A large sheep on SH27 at Patetonga about 4.15pm Sunday. A cow running along Old Tauranga rd near Waihi about 8am on Monday. Five cows loose on SH1 at Ohinewai about 4.30pm on Monday. Seven large cows on Bush Rd near Ngatea about 6.30am Monday. A large deer on SH29 on the west side of the Kaimai summit about 9.45am on Monday. Three sheep on the road on SH25 near Whitianga at 12.20pm on Monday. 10-15 cows walking along Waitomo Caves Rd about 4.20am Monday. A cow on SH3 near Ohaupo about 11am Tuesday. Three goats on the Thames Coast Rd about midday on Thursday. Two cows on SH3 near Airport Rd, Rukuhia about 6.35am Friday.
"In addition to these we've had about half a dozen incidents of dogs on rural highways over the same period including two incidents where the animals have had to be put down.
"In each incident there was the potential for serious injuries or worse being suffered and Police are very appreciative of motorists taking the time to notify authorities of potential risks and in many cases, making efforts to usher stock back into paddocks before accidents occur."

Dorothy and Marv Davenport received plenty of community sympathy after they lost $6,000 in an asphalt paving scam earlier this month. One Longview company even repaired the shoddy job for free.
The Cathlamet couple were approached on Aug. 1 by a man offering a deal for asphalt left over from another job. The small paving job at the Elochoman Valley Road home turned into a more extensive project. At the end of it, the workers demanded $9,000, with the Davenports eventually agreeing to pay $6,000.
The couple blamed themselves for falling for the scam. But following the Aug. 8 Daily News story, Dorothy Davenport said several people told her about their similar experiences.
People were very sympathetic. It made me feel better that we werent the only ones, though I feel bad they had to go through the same situation, too, Davenport, 75, said Thursday.
Washington State Department of Labor & Industries is still investigating the case.
After reading the Davenports story, Scott Schill, manager of Accurate Asphalt Solutions in Longview, offered to repair the driveway for free. Schill said he sees paving scams all the time and hates how scammers have blighted the industry.
I was heartbroken. Ive done work for the family. Theyre part of my customer base, so I wanted to take care of them, Schill said Thursday. Theyre good people.
After surveying the bad paving job, Schill said he wouldnt have even paid $6,000.
They got ripped off. Some of that asphalt was a half-inch thick. It wouldnt have made it through the winter, he said.
Workers spent eight hours Wednesday cutting out the bad asphalt and laying down new blacktop, which was donated by Lakeside Industries. Davenport said she was grateful for the generosity from Accurate Asphalt and Lakeside, which saved the family from waiting just before winter to get the pavement repaired.
