Last call has arrived for Station Squares east warehouse.
By Monday, it will be heavy equipment, not pulsating dance music, rattling the rafters at the longtime night spot that at one time or another housed the likes of Whim, Hooters, Saddle Ridge, Matrix, the Pittsburgh Sports Garden, Woodsons All-Star Grille and Margarita Mamas.
Station Square owner Forest City Enterprise is demolishing the old red brick building as part of a plan to eventually add residential housing to the east side of its complex, now used almost exclusively for parking.
The Whim night club tried to block the demolition this spring, claiming the developer improperly terminated its lease. But Allegheny County Common Pleas Senior Judge Joseph James sided with Forest City, clearing the way for the razing.
Forest City had hoped to have the demolition completed by Sept. 1. But spokesman Jeff Linton said the company ran into delays. By the time the court battle with Whim ended, the bids for the razing had expired and Forest City was forced to get new ones. It also had to find a way to run temporary electrical hook-ups to the area.
These are just normal delays due to issues beyond our control, he said.
The demolition is now scheduled to start Monday, although Tim Schaaf, president of Schaaf Inc., the contractor, said work could begin this weekend.
He expects the razing to take four to six weeks., though Mr. Linton said it could run until mid-November. The east warehouse will not go out with a blast like Three Rivers Stadium. Instead, Schaaf will use heavy equipment such as excavators to tear down the building.
Mr. Schaaf, who was at the site Thursday, said there is nothing particularly challenging about the job. Its standard, he said, adding all asbestos and hazardous material had been removed in years past.
Schaaf is no stranger to the work. It has handled a number of demolitions in the past, including Showcase Cinemas West in Robinson, now the site of a car dealership.

August 22, 2014 - Addressing line of sight challenges, MiniStation features Vertica adjustable pendant arm and can be ceiling-mounted for accelerated and facilitated repositioning. Counterbalanced arm, which lets operator position display where needed, can also be adjusted vertically. Promoting clear visibility of work area while maintaining instant interface access, HMI supports various customizations; examples include fully integrated keyboard trays, keyboard and mouse ports, KVM extenders, and mountings. Strongarm Designs, Inc. 425 Caredean Dr. Horsham, PA, 19044 USA Press release date: August 21, 2014
Strongarm Designs has developed an HMI solution that addresses the challenges faced by drill cabin operators. The MiniStation features the industry standard Vertica adjustable pendant arm, and can be ceiling-mounted to allow for quick and effortless repositioning. The counterbalanced arm allows the operator to position the display exactly where needed, and can be adjusted vertically to suit the operator's preference.
The MiniStation addresses one of the greatest challenges faced by drilling rig operators, line of sight. Operators need to have clear visibility of the work area while maintaining instant access to their interface displays.
Xtreme Coil Drilling Corp. recently employed the new solution to solve its ergonomic interface challenges.
Gary Werner, project engineer with Xtreme Coil Drilling, said "We required a robust overhead mounting system, complete with display that provided adequate adjustment flexibility for operator use and servicing control panels locations. We needed to allow the operators to move their monitors in order to improve visibility, unlike our preexisting monitor equipment that was fixed-mounted.
"We investigated competing operator interface system vendors, but Strongarm was the only one willing to address our requirements by directly involving their design team personnel to meet our specific requirements and delivery schedule."
Strongarm's ability to rapidly customize these systems meant that it could address all of Xtreme Coil's interface needs. These included fully integrated keyboard trays, easily accessible keyboard and mouse ports, KVM extenders for remote PC locations, and customized mountings to facilitate easy installation into the operator cabins on drilling rigs.

Clear the decks, the iPhone 6 is on the way.
In a bid to get rid of old iPhone stock before Apple launches the next iteration of its handset, Walmart has moved to slash the cost of the 5C model, making it even more wallet-friendly than before. The 5S has also been discounted.
Starting Thursday, you can now pick up the 5C (16GB) for a mere 97 cents (down from $29), while the flagship 5S model (also 16GB) has had $20 lopped off, leaving it with a $79 price tag.
The deal, which will reportedly run for 90 days, applies when you sign up for a two-year contract with AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, or US Cellular.
However, with the offer running for 90 days, and theiPhone 6 expected to launch next month, consumers interested inan Apple smartphone would be better off waiting tosee how the market looks once Tim Cook has finished his spiel. The likelihood is youll be presented with an even better deal on the 5C and 5S,or you might even be tempted to gofor the new model.

Though we know nothing for certain about the iPhone 6 this is Apple were talking about, after all recent leaks, rumors, and speculation suggest the tech powerhouse is on the verge of rolling outtwo devices, both sporting bigger displays than those of the current iPhones.
The expected 4.7-inch version is believed to be ready for a full launch, while a number of reports have suggested the rumored 5.5-inch alternative has been experiencing technical difficulties and thereforemight not land for a few more months.. If it does launch at the same time as the smaller version, supplies may at first be limited.

ST. CHARLES The St. Charles School District 303 Board this month approved a six-figure settlement in a lawsuit tied to the 2001 mold discovery at St. Charles East High School.
School board members on Aug. 11 voted, 7-0, in favor of paying the Illinois School District Agency $660,000, plus court fees and interest. The members made a motion on the settlement issue after an executive session lasting less than 45 minutes.
The $660,000 settlement is in accordance with a July 31 ruling in Cook County Circuit Court on a lawsuit filed against the district by the agency, according to the boards motion on the payment. The Illinois School District Agency was one of the districts insurance carriers at the time mold was found at St. Charles East, District Superintendent Don Schlomann said.
The ruling was in favor of the agency, which sought to obtain the roughly $660,000 the district collected from its other previous insurance carriers. The court fees and interest that were part of the ruling likely will amount to about an additional $3,000, Schlomann said.
The Illinois School District Agency argued that it helped pay for costs associated with the mold remediation and was due the $660,000 instead of the district. The district contended that there had been additional costs in connection to the remediation that the agency did not cover, and therefore the district should not have to give the money to the agency, Schlomann said.
The agency also sought payment for additional legal costs associated with its lawsuit, but that was denied in the ruling.
Indications are that [the agency] might appeal based on the legal costs, Schlomann said. If thats the case ... more than likely we would cross-appeal.
The agency has 30 days from the July 31 ruling to file an appeal. The settlement will be paid out of the districts tort fund, which is directly set up to help pay for its legal expenses, Schlomann said.
It wont affect our expenditures for this years district budget, Schlomann said of the settlement.
After testing in 2001 showed St. East had a mold problem, the district closed the building for 18 months and spent more than $29 million to remove the mold. Some of the personal injury lawsuits in connection to the mold eventually were condensed into one suit, which included a settlement of less than $100,000 to six defendants, Schlomann told the Kane County Chronicle in 2007.
