Stop hill cutting or face action

Kota Kinabalu: The Land and Survey Department has advised the owner of 12 Country Lease (CL) titled land at Kg Togudon in Penampang, who are currently doing hill cutting there, to stop the activity or face action.

Its Director Datuk Osman Jamal said the department's investigations made following a complaint, which was also published in the Daily Express on Monday, showed that the owner concerned does not have an approval to carry out hill-cutting.

He said the department's record shows the landowner had never submitted an application to carry out hill cutting to the department for approval and thus the department had never issued any approval for the activity.

"Our check showed there is a hill-cutting activity involving the 12 CL titled land area.

But the department has never issued an approval to the landowner to carry out the said activity, so I advise the landowner to so do immediately or face legal action," he said when met at his office in Wisma Tanah and Ukur, here Tuesday.

Osman said the department, through the Penampang Land and Survey Office, will issue a stop work order to the landowner today (Wednesday).

He said if the landowner fails to comply, action would be taken against him under the State Land Ordinance.

On the issue of a quarry project at Kg Notoruss in Babagon, Osman explained that actually until today there is no quarry activity at the said site but only land clearing activity.

This was based on an inspection conducted by the Penampang Land and Survey Office at the said site on Aug 17.

Stop hill cutting or face action

Construction equipment for land clearing was brought onto the site of the future home of a new shopping center at High School Road and Highway 305 just before 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Access to ProBuild, a building materials store, was limited as workers in orange-safety vests and hand-held stop signs restricted traffic through the property where the shopping center will be built.

Visconsi, an Ohio-based development company, received a clearing permit last week from the city of Bainbridge Island. The company had hoped to begin the selective removal of trees Monday from the 8.14-acre site where the shopping center will be built, but the land instead became ground zero in a much publicized demonstration against Visconsi and the new shopping center.

The demonstration was led by Chiara DAngelo, who climbed 70 feet up a Douglas fir on the property and camped out on a raised platform roped to the tree for two days. DAngelo concluded her demonstration Tuesday night and left the property just before 9 p.m.

Visconsi officials could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday morning.

Following this, he moved to BMW DesignWorks, where he split his time between the studios in Munich and LA, and designed the interiors of the 3 and 4 Series BMWs, and the latest Mini hatch.

In 2010, he had his first taste of working for PSA, where he was project manager for Peugeot. "At the time, it was not the best place to work," he told Car Design News. "Lots of projects were cancelled, so I had to move on."

That move was a return to Mercedes, working between the advanced studio in Como and the main facility at Sindelfingen in Germany. His major work during this time was the Concept GLA, shown at the Shanghai show in 2013, and the interior of the GT project which was revealed to coincide with the opening of Mercedes R&D center in Sunnyvale, CA.

During this time, he remained in touch with PSA, and when visa issues proved insurmountable following his move to Tesla, Madelaine-Advenier returned to France in July.

Talking about his new role to Car Design News, he explains the current challenge. "We need to make DS, Citron and Peugeot very separate brands. To do this, we need to develop a new DNA for Citron interiors. It'll be based around a 'feel good' philosophy, this means pure and strong design, but also something that is comfortable and welcoming."

The obvious question is how much the new Cactus represents the direction he believes Citron cabins should take? "The Cactus is what could become the brand DNA for Citron," says Madelaine-Advenier. "But it is missing a little something, the link with the heritage of the Citron brand."

As to what the heritage should be, Madelaine-Advenier is quick not to default to the example of the original DS. "I'm more inspired by Citrons of the 70s and 80s the CX and GS in particular," he says. "There are so many things that are avantgarde about the interiors of these cars. The ergonomy is impressive, as the design inspiration comes from helicopters. My tutor was a Citron interior designer in the 70s, and he was really into helicopters, and you can tell this from the simple ergonomy of these cars."

Outside of the automotive world, Madelaine-Advenier is a fan of furniture design that uses new materials and communicates light weight. He's a fan of German designer Konstantin Grcic, and cites the example of Jean Prouv's Cit chair as a favorite: "It has very thin leather strips that form the arms, it's very graphical, very geometrical."

We'll have to wait until his first show car, due at either the Geneva or Shanghai motor shows in 2015, to see how that influences Citron's new interior design DNA.

BANGOR, Maine Work is continuing on upgrades to Cameron Stadium, home of the Bangor High School football team and numerous other local athletic entities.

After playing all their home games on Saturday afternoons last season while the stadiums electrical and lighting system was being upgraded, the Rams will play all home games under the lights this fall, beginning with the September 12 contest against Scarborough.

The new lighting was turned on for the first time last spring and is ready to go, said Bangor High School athletic administrator Steve Vanidestine. With the stadiums electrical needs now linked to the adjacent William S. Cohen School rather than connected to the power grid separately like the previous light system, the school department that operates the facility will save an estimated $20,000 per year in demand fees.

Vanidestine said the return to Friday night home games would be beneficial on several fronts, among them the fact that the high school team wont have to compete for fans on Saturday afternoons with University of Maine and Husson University home games, and it will allow players to have some additional weekend rest on both Saturdays and Sundays after Friday night home games rather than playing those games on Saturdays.

Bangor is scheduled to play just one Saturday afternoon regular-season game this season, that on Oct. 18 at Cheverus of Portland.

Coach Mark Hacketts Rams, who finished 5-5 and reached the Eastern Maine Class A semifinals last fall in the first season of the Maine Principals Associations new four-class format, open their 2014 campaign at Edward Little of Auburn on Sept. 5. After hosting Scarborough the following week, Bangor faces back-to-back road trips to Portland for games Sept. 19 at Deering and Sept. 26 at Portland High School.

Bangor then plays three of its final four regular-season contests in the Queen City, beginning with home dates against Windham on Oct. 3 and Lewiston on Oct. 10.

After traveling to Cheverus, the Rams will conclude the regular season with their homecoming game against Oxford Hills of South Paris on Oct. 24.

By the time Bangor hosts Windham, new restroom facilities should be completed and operational just behind the year-old main grandstand at the stadium.

Vanidestine said all the preparation work involving plumbing, wiring and electricity has been completed, with the end of September serving as the target date for completion of the building.

How to Create a Wired Network at Home

Severe summer storms terrorized Okotoks last week as at least three buildings and one tree was hit with lightning during the evening of Aug 14.

Stuart Donaldson was surprised when he came home and found his maple ash tree in the backyard of his Downey Green house split right down the middle. His neighbour Don Gilbert found splinters from the tree on his deck two doors down.

I found a piece over by my barbecue. We heard it but we didnt know what happened, it was so close and we came and checked it out and just saw it, there was debris over by our house, Gilbert said. It was an explosion, Ive never heard anything like that.

Okotoks Fire Department responded to three lightning related calls during the storm a business that was struck on McRae Street, a house on Crystal Shores, and a house that was hit in Drake Landing. The first two received no damage, but the Drake Landing home received extensive damage including an attic fire.

Owner Chuck Shields wasnt home at the time, but his 19-year-old son Spencer was. Shields said his neighbour was watching the storm and saw Shields Drake Landing house get hit.

My neighbour sent a photo three or four seconds after it hit and the house was already starting to smoulder, Shields said.

Fortunately, another neighbour quickly came over and knocked on the door to alert Spencer to get out of the house, as he was in the basement and hadnt initially realized the house was on fire.

He didnt know because he couldnt smell anything, Chuck said. He did exactly what he was told to do, grabbed the dog and grabbed his phone and was out of the house in 20 seconds.

The familys bird was also rescued by firefighters who were on site quickly and were able to contain the fire to the attic. In addition to the fire, the bolt blew out a light in the master bathroom and travelled through the wiring, erupting out of a bar fridge in the basement.

Okotoks Deputy Fire Chief Pat MacIsaac said the department has responded to a few other lightning strikes this summer, and each year its something theyve come to expect.

Lightning ignites attic of Drake Landing home

MEMPHIS, Tenn. Criminals are stopping one mans fight against blight in Binghampton.

He was hoping if he fixed one home, there would be a domino effect.

I had a vision. I saw potential in this property, said Deon Spight.

Some people told him it would never work, that he was crazy to invest in any home on Carpenter. Now, hes starting to agree.

Spight said when he first bought the home last year, things went great. He slowly fixed up the place.

In the last few months, however, thieves stripped the aluminum siding, yanked what was left of the copper wiring, and even stole the Azalea bushes lining the walkway.

If thats not enough, Spight said he picks up beer cans and drug paraphernalia in the yard daily.

Anything that is not bolted down, they will come back and try to steal, he said.

Spight said he called police over and over again, and even filed three reports.

Memphis police told WREG they went to the home three times last week, but didnt mention if they are close to catching who did it.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -

One of the fastest growing communities in St. Johns County has been faced with thieves.Construction crews in Nocatee have reported burglars to the St. Johns County Sheriffs Office and the crooks are breaking into homes that are under construction and stealing what they can.

The St. Johns County Sheriffs Office told News4Jax Tuesday that the constant construction in Nocatee is making it a target for thieves.

"You don't have the neighborhood watch, you don't have the people looking out for other people and you also have some of these homes being left unlocked, being left in different stages of completion, and so you have valuables there," said St. Johns Countys Kevin Kelshaw.

News4Jax found four different home construction sites in the Nocatee area that have been burglarized.On Park Lake Drive, a built-in oven, cooktop, kitchen cabinets and two microwaves were stolen from a home under construction.

On Magnolia Creek Walk, burglars stole a washer and dryer and thieves struck twice on Hiller Lane, stealing $4,000 worth of lath metal, a metal wiring used in home construction.

"Metal lath is not traceable, there's not a serial number or anything like that on it," said contractor Daniel Wilkinson."There's no way to identify it. It's like a package of shingles that you would buy for a roof. There's no identification other than each individual piece and it's very easy to sell."

Wilkinson said thieves often turn around and sell the lath metal to other contractors for half the price and with little to no evidence to go off of.

"We urge people to keep that in mind when you are locking up a house, securing a house, keep it locked, keep it secured and don't give a bad guy an opportunity to steal from you," said Kelshaw.

"Its very tough to make it, so anything you battle against, especially a thief, is hard to deal with and makes you angry," said Wilkinson.

RWC Eliminates Inspection Requirement for Grandfathered Homes

NEW YORK Fortune Brands Home & Security Inc. said Wednesday that it has agreed to sell its Simonton Windows business to building products maker Ply Gem Holdings Inc. for about $130 million.

The deal is expected to close in October.

Fortune Brands, which makes Master Lock padlocks, Kemper kitchen cabinets and Moen water faucets, said it is selling its window business to focus on its Therma-Tru door business and Fypon home trim business.

The company expects the sale of Simonton to cut its earnings per share during the second half of 2014 between 2 cents and 4 cents.

Ply Gem, which is based in Cary, North Carolina, said it is buying Simonton to help it grow its windows division and plans to operate the company as a stand-alone business.

Simonton is based in Columbus, Ohio and also has manufacturing facilities in West Virginia, Illinois and California.
