When Wendy and Alex Haig set out five years ago to find the perfect weekend retreat, they were torn between two different bucolic areas: the rolling horse country of Middleburg, Va., and the wide expanse of the Chesapeake Bay.

"The bay very clearly won out," Wendy Haig says.

Alex Haig, a lawyer and son of former Secretary of State Alexander Haig, and his wife, a managing partner for a marketing strategy company, wanted a place where they could relax with family and friends and escape from the pressures of Washington.

Briefly they considered a beach house, but they didn't want the hassle of a long commute to the shore. The bay offered them waterfront views just 45 minutes from Washington.

But finding the right house wasn't easy. The Haigs spied a Cape Cod-style waterfront home in an old online real estate listing that seemed to be what they were looking for, but the house wasn't on the market and they didn't even know its address.

One day when a real estate agent was showing them a property in the Bay Ridge community south of Annapolis, they passed by the house they had seen online. After making some inquiries, the Haigs learned that the house was about to return to the market. They snatched it up before it went on sale.

Alex Haig says the location was what mattered. "What we really thought we were buying was the view," he says.

The half-acre property featured almost unobstructed views of the bay, and the Haigs could watch the sun rise and set from the large window in the family room.

Wendy Haig says the home reminded her of those she saw as a child vacationing on Cape Cod, but its original traditional design and dark jewel tones didn't reflect her own style, which she describes as "polished with an edge."

NARRAGANSETT The Narragansett Planning Board and Historic District Commission convened on Tuesday evening for a special workshop to analyze possible amendments to local historic districts and to identify key properties and areas for potential district additions. The subcommittee focused on the need to further examine designations and districts in light of the recent controversy surrounding a proposal to subdivide a lot on Kentara Green, specifically one of the Sherry Cottages. Over the course of the last two months, many residents have been up-in-arms about a proposal made by David DiClemente to sub-divide his property at 65 Gibson Ave., sitting on Kentara Green, in order to build a two to three car garage with an apartment above. The apartment was originally not part of the proposal, but was added later in order to adhere to the towns policy on lot sub-divisions. The proposal came before the planning board and historic district commission at different times throughout the course of the last two months.

CHICAGOThe metro areas industrial economy in general, and the south suburban submarket in particular, keeps making progress on the road to recovery. Premier Design + Build Group, LLC, for example, will soon begin the design-build process on a speculative project for Bridge Development Partners, LLC and Akard Street Partners, LP at 8401W. 47th St. in suburban McCook. The Itasca-based Premier recently completed an institutional grade build-to-suit just next-door for the same developers.

It is a promising time to begin a new development project. The recently completed Bridge/Akard project, at 8201 W. 47th St., was a 365,400-square-foot build-to-suit that was just occupied by Freeman Decorating. Furthermore, the vacancy rate in the I-290 submarket dropped dramatically from the first quarter level of 7.0% to 5.32% a stunning 168 bps decline and the most of any Chicago area market, according to Colliers second quarter report. This was largely due to extremely strong second quarter sale volume.

And in addition to the new construction for Freeman, Golden State Foods moved into a 152,700-square-foot build-to-suit just down the street at 8901W. 47th St. and this new spec is not the only one in McCook. DP Partners has already begun construction at LogisticCenter McCook that will add 662,700-square-feet of speculative space to I-290 Souths industrial inventory, according to Colliers.

The new 14-acre site for Bridge and Akard will have relatively quick access to I-290, I-55 and I-294. Distributors, manufacturers and freight forwarders could take up space in the newest project, which can house up to four tenants. The new facility will contain 34 exterior truck docks and four drive-in doors. Building envelope materials will include insulated load-bearing precast wall panels, a 45-mil fully ballasted EPDM roofing system and glass and glazing at the office entryway. Users will have a 32 clear height, and an ESFR sprinkler system.

The builders will install a new asphalt parking lot with 11 trailer and 219 car stalls. They anticipate completing the project in the first quarter of 2015.

Jeremy Jelonek with Premier is the project manager and Scott Lebak is field superintendent. Cornerstone Architects are delivering architectural services. Manhard Consulting, Ltd. is the civil engineer. The project is being financed by the PrivateBank and Associated Bank and Vern Schultz and Tom Condon of Colliers are the brokers for the facility.

Bridge and Premier to Start McCook Spec

I always think if more people are going to home depot, fewer people are going to be out buying homes.

Maybe they are picking up their own for a sale.

What does it mean for you?

He could mean either one.

We track an index we created, the remodeling index.

What it shows is an increase in the modeling and at -- restoration of the homes.

Part of that is people buying homes and fixing them up and part of that is people saying, i will stay in the home i have got for a while and keep on maintaining it and making it at her.

Home depot, i always like to look at it and know people out there -- i spent a lot of time myself on home depot.

They always do well in the second quarter.

Housing Starts Rise to Highest Level in 8 Months

PERRY, Maine (AP) _ U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Interior Secretary Sally Jewell took a firsthand look at a tribal school as they promoted President Barack Obama's goals for education reform.

The two members of Obama's cabinet on Monday visited the Beatrice Rafferty School, located on the Passamaquoddy Pleasant Point reservation, which serves more than 100 students. They were joined by Bureau of Indian Affairs Director Monty Roessel, along with Pleasant Point Chief Clayton Cleaves and Principal Mike Chadwick.

The two secretaries convened a study group last year to assess issues within Bureau of Indian Education-funded schools, which are among the lowest-performing schools in the country.

Last month, the study group issued a Blueprint for Reform. Goals for the 183 elementary and secondary schools and dormitories that are part of the Bureau of Indian Education include high-speed Internet, additional training for teachers and greater spending flexibility for tribal schools when it comes to meeting education goals.

The Beatrice Rafferty School, which was built in the 1970s, is due for replacement with federal funds. The funding was announced by Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree earlier this year.

ASBESTOS roof sheeting has been fully removed from the fire damaged warehouse in North Mackay that housed the Boomerang Secondhand store destroyed by fire in late April.

Reconstruction work on the World War Two era building on Harbour Road is expected to begin within weeks once final clearance is given by Work Health and Safety Queensland..

The cleanup of the historic Walkers Market shed began in mid-July and the slow process involved removing the asbestos debris after the roof collapsed during the blaze.

A crew from Queensland Asbestos Management Services (QAMS) are finalising their decontamination work to ensure all particles are removed with a final clean of the timber framework.

A Work Health and Safety Queensland spokesman said the asbestos contaminated material and debris was transported to an asbestos waste facility in accordance with government requirements.

Police have charged two youths with arson as a result of the fire.

Kimpton Hotel & Restaurants announced plans Tuesday to convert a historic LaSalle Street office building into a four-star hotel in what would be its fifth adaptive reuse project in Chicago.

The San Francisco-based company said it acquired The New York Life Building, a William Le Baron Jenney designed building constructed in 1894 at 39 S. LaSalle St.

When the $106 million renovation is completed in early 2016, the 14-story office building will include 281 hotel rooms, a restaurant and bar, meeting and event space, a top floor ballroom and 9,500 square feet of retail space on the ground floor.

The building, considered an important example of Chicago School high-rise construction, was completed as 12 stories facing LaSalle Street in 1894. In 1898, a 13-story addition was built to the east of the original building that received a one-story rooftop addition. A 14th floor was added to the entire building fronting LaSalle and Monroe streets in 1903, according to city records.

It was designated a Chicago landmark in 2006, and Kimpton CEO Mike Depatie said the plan is to maintain the look and the feel of this beautiful 1894 vintage building.

That is a decidedly different plan from eight years ago, when half of the total area of the building was to be torn down to make way for a 51-story high-rise, encroaching on the original buildings footprint. That project never materialized.

Kimpton acquired the property from Hamilton Partners, tapping a $203 million private equity fund it closed in February, with the goal of acquiring more than $500 million worth of hotels during the next three years.

It will be the fifth hotel project in Chicago for the company, which has renovated other historic buildings in the city into Hotel Burnham, Hotel Allegro, Hotel Monaco and Hotel Palomar. Depatie said the company hopes to begin the project before years end.

A lot of people that work in that area are staying elsewhere, Depatie added. We know theres a lot of hotel demand. Its just being accommodated elsewhere.

Sibley Memorial Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, is continuing the implementation of its long range master plan with The New Sibley. The New Sibley will include a 40,000 SF state-of-the-art radiation oncology cancer center and a 200 bed replacement patient pavilion and emergency department, both of which will be LEED Certified Silver.

The first was the medical building and parking garage. The second was the radiation oncology facility and the third is the new Sibley bed tower. He elaborated that, "the new private patient rooms will be 'family friendly' and the largest in the market place.

The patient pavilion will feature all private medical and surgical patient rooms, supported by a decentralized nursing layout. A new obstetrics department will allow capacity for more than 4,500 annual births, supported by a new special care nursery, LDRs, and C-section rooms. A new emergency department will be up-sized to handle 45,000 annual visits, with expansion capability for 50,000 visits.
