A SENIOR firefighter broke down in tears yesterday when asked if anything could have been done to prevent the deaths of Steven Kadar and Katie Peters.

Craig Hore was one of the pairs bosses on February 13 last year when a 30-metre alpine ash tree fell on the roof of their vehicle.

Ive had 18 months to think about it, Mr Hore said in reply to the question from coroner John Olle.

Mr Hore was unable to say anything for a couple of minutes, prompting Mr Olle to briefly adjourn the inquest in Wodonga.

His tears prompted the dead mans mother, Jan Kadar, to also start sobbing.

After the break, Mr Hore who was the divisional commander for the western division of the Harrietville fire said he was fine to try to answer the question again.

    Jason Verrett sheds red jersey

    - August 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chargers Jason Verrett runs a drill during practice.

Jason Verrett made a wardrobe change Monday.

It was a necessary precursor for his preseason debut.

The Chargers first-round cornerback practiced Monday without his usual red jersey. He was cleared to wear the standard blue, signaling he is close to making his first NFL appearance. It will come either Sunday versus the 49ers or the final exhibition game, Aug. 28 against the Cardinals.

A red jersey is used to indicate a limitation from contact.

Verrett, who had shoulder surgery in March, began wearing it Aug. 1.

Should he make his NFL debut Sunday, he'll do so close to home. He grew up in Fairfield, about 75 miles north of Levi's Stadium. He also grayshirted and played his freshman season at nearby Santa Rosa Junior College before transferring to TCU.

Inside linebacker Manti Te'o (foot sprain) did not practice Monday.

Neither did wide receiver Vincent Brown (groin), nose tackle Sean Lissemore (ankle), safety Jahleel Addae (hamstring), cornerback Marcus Cromartie (groin), defensive end Lawrence Guy (shoulder), defensive end Damik Scafe, center Nick Hardwick and running back Kerwynn Williams.

Brown has missed the most time of the group. He was injured July 25, the second day of training camp.

    LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

A construction trailer became unhitched and crashed into the side of a La Crosse restaurant Monday morning.

North Country Steak Buffett co-owner Tom OBrien told News 8 he and one of this managers was sitting in the restaurant at about 11:20 a.m. when all of a sudden there was a big crash.

It was like the wall exploded, OBrien said.

They were sitting about 20 feet away from the window on the buildings south side. No one was sitting at the window booth when the crash happened.

It was a blessing that nobody got hurt, OBrien said.

The cost of the damage is not known at this time.

The crash caused the North Country Steak Buffet to close on Monday. The restaurant is expected to reopen on Tuesday.

DALLAS Monday marked the ending of an era as Herreras Cafe, a Maple Avenue mainstay, shuts its doors.

The owners of Herreras, which has operated a restaurant on Maple since 1971, said they were pushed out by high real estate prices in the area.

It's a landmark, I know," said Nora Ontiveros, a member of the small family-owned chain. "But we can't make it, so we're just going to move on. Were just a mom-and-pop restaurant."

She said they couldnt come to an agreement on a lease at their present location. The family had originally hoped to move into a new restaurant building thats under construction across the street, but they couldnt come to an agreement for that location, either.

Her husband is the son of the founders, the late Maria and Lucio Ontiveros. They opened the popular Tex-Mex restaurant in 1971. Back then, the restaurant only had nine tables, and customers lined up with coolers of beer as they waited to get inside.

The original Maple Avenue location was featured in a 1984 edition of National Geographic. A huge painting of that iconic National Geographic photo adorns the restaurant entrance.

Northern VA Contractor Featured in Washington Post

    - August 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chantilly, VA (PRWEB) August 18, 2014

Northern Virginias top remodeling company, Moss Building & Design, was featured in the Washington Post regarding the recent completion of an in-law suite addition in Springfield, VA. Recently, in-law suites have risen in popularity. These kinds of additions allow families to stay close while providing enough square footage for additional family members.

An in-law suite by definition is a space that includes a bedroom, sitting area, and a bathroom. In the D.C. Metro region, these areas cannot include more than a couple appliances, a stove, or a full kitchen because this would require a special permit.

The Washington Post article featured the Harris family and their in-law suite addition in Northern Virginia. Moss Building & Design built a 1,000-square foot addition for the family, creating a new kitchen and great room alongside an in-law suite. Through this new addition, Diane Harris enjoys a private and personalized space that is accessible to the main features of the home. In the suite, there is a bedroom-living area with a bathroom equipped for accessibility: a low-curb shower with ramp entry, a hand-held shower head, built-in bench, and grab bars.

Co-owner Jason Hampel advises homeowners considering this in-law suite additions to design with the long term in mind and to consider the number of uses for the space which could range from housing a relative to adding a positive home element if selling the house later on.

Moss has seen a rise in the number of in-law suites this year doubling their number from 2012.

The article is currently featured online in the Real Estate section of The Washington Post. It will run in the print edition of The Washington Post on Saturday, August 16th.

Villaggio Reserve Sells 25 Percent of Homes Ahead of Schedule

    - August 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) August 18, 2014

Award-winning South Florida home builder Ansca Homes has achieved an important milestone at Villaggio Reserve, Delray Beachs latest and most exciting 55-plus community. The resort-style development on Hagen Ranch Road just north of Atlantic Avenue already has sold 25 percent of its planned residences.

This is a remarkable feat for a new development that began selling its first homes in January. The milestone is testament to the luxury lifestyle todays homebuyers seek in an active, upscale destination.

Sales traffic has far exceeded our expectations and reveals the excitement buyers feel about Delray Beach and Villaggio Reserve, says Ron Yuter, senior vice president with Ansca Homes. Residences start in the $280,000s and rise to the $400,000s. Our success tells us that 55-plus homebuyers are smart buyers who demand the amenity-rich, high-value product were building. At our current pace, well easily sell a third of our homes by year-end.

Villaggio Reserves new residents arent yesterdays 55-plus buyers. They include empty-nesters downsizing from other South Florida communities, active couples still working or running businesses, and Northeasterners looking to relocate to what Rand McNally called the most fun small town in America.

Its no surprise that homebuyers are finding what they want at Villaggio Reserve. Ansca Homes found one of the best remaining locations just a few miles down Atlantic Avenue from historic downtown Delray Beach and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. Anscas team of skilled designers then created feature-rich homes in a breathtaking Spanish-Italian architectural style, and put them in a community with all the lifestyle benefits todays 55-plus buyers seek.

Residences include such treatments as granite countertops and Kitchen Craft Cabinetry in the kitchens and master baths, and upgraded wall-to-wall carpeting and padding and 18-by-18-inch ceramic tiles throughout.

Even the little touches show unparalleled attention to detail. The colonial-style, 8-foot raised panel doors offer Schlage lever door handles. Models range from three bedrooms, three baths and a den, family room and a living room, to two-bedroom, two-bath residences with a den, entertainment area and separate eat-in area. All homes have garages, patios and storm-resistant doors and windows for additional safety and peace of mind.

No one will settle down when they settle in Villaggio Reserve. The community will be anchored by the 38,000-square-foot Cabana Club clubhouse and resort area. When it opens around the new year, this town square will deliver active living unmatched in the marketplace.

Residents, their families and guests will enjoy sit-down breakfast and lunch in the indoor restaurant or beneath the covered and screened lanai. The Social Hall regularly will host events and performances, as well as residents private affairs.

Governor releases $300K for two Big Island projects

    - August 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Thursday announced the release of the more than $15.5 million in funding for various capital improvement projects for Department of Transportation highways and facilities statewide. Nearly $300,000 is headed to the Big Island for two South Kohala projects.

The Waimea Baseyard Wastewater System will receive $250,000 in additional design and construction funds for a new wastewater system that complies with state Department of Health and federal Environmental Protection Agency requirements.

Some $47,000 in additional land and design funds was also released to construct a new dedicated right-turn lane, increase existing turn-lane lengths, and install a new acceleration lane at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road, according to Abercrombie. The extra funding was needed because of unanticipated archaeological sites that were encountered during the design of the project that required an archaeological survey. Land funds are being used to acquire three zoned agricultural parcels from the Queen Emma Foundation.

These funds will allow priority repair and maintenance projects to move forward, improve safety along our state highways, and in the process give a boost to our economy through job growth in construction, Abercrombie said.

Other projects around the state receiving funding, which were previously identified by state legislators, include:

A plumber, teacher and vet win the rugby World Cup!

    - August 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Their coach Gary Street, who described the win as "a bit like a dream", quit his own job as a surveyor seven years ago to drive up and down the country recruiting, encouraging and training the women.

Here's a look at some of the squad's alter egos.

Katy McLean - the captain of the squad is also a primary school teacher in Sunderland, teaching 4 and 5 year olds. Emily Scarratt - scored 16 points for England as the centre in the final on Sunday, but will also go back to teaching in September, as a PE assistant at King Edward's School in Birmingham. Marlie Packer - a flanker, is also a plumber. In a pleasing bit of understatement, this is how she described balancing a job with the demands of being an international sporting hero: "With our jobs it is a bit tricky." Sophie Hemming - a prop, is also a vet at Avenue Veterinary Centre in Bristol. Maggie Alphonsi - one of the biggest stars of women's rugby is an MBE known by many as "Maggie the Machine". The flanker is also a mentor for the youth sport trust and a rugby World Cup ambassador.

The full squad also includes students, teachers, youth workers, a physiotherapist, a policewoman, a lifeguard, and an occupational therapist.

    Bionic flies could save crops

    - August 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

New research suggests that releasing genetically engineered fruit flies into the wild could prove a cheap, effective and environmentally friendly way of pest control.

Scientists at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and Oxford-based Oxitec Ltd have conducted trials in a simulated wild environment in a Crete greenhouse. The next stage will be to gain approval for open-field studies.

Oxitec has developed a genetic approach to control medfly that is species specific and cost effective that relies on males passing on a self-limiting trait to female offspring.

This collaborative research study with UEA shows that the approach is effective and once appropriate regulatory approvals are received the technology will offer growers a safe and effective route to protect their crops.

Currently medfly causes crop losses in many parts of the world where it is an introduced, invasive and difficult to control pest as well as its native Mediterranean habitat. The partners now reveal that the release of genetically engineered male flies could be used as an effective population suppression method saving crops around the world.

The Mediterranean fruit fly is a serious agricultural pest which causes extensive damage to crops. It is currently controlled by a combination of insecticides, baited traps, biological control and releasing sterilised insects to produce non-viable matings, known as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT).

Researchers simulated a wild environment within greenhouses in Crete and studied the impact of releasing Oxitec flies.

Lead researcher Dr Philip Leftwich, from UEAs school of Biological Sciences and Oxitec, said: The Mediterranean Fruit Fly infests more than 300 types of cultivated and wild fruits, vegetables and nuts. It is a real pest to agriculture and causes extreme damage to crops all around the world.

Of all of the current techniques used to control these flies, SIT is considered the most environmentally friendly as it uses sterile males to interrupt matings between wild males and females. The downside is that these males dont tend to mate as well in the wild because the irradiation method used for sterilisation weakens them.

Our research looked at whether releasing Oxitec flies, which are genetically engineered so that only male fly offspring survive, could provide a better alternative.
